The Auston Matthews situation
I really wanted to take my time with this because I knew more info would come out and I’m sure even more is soon to follow. And I want to be clear from the start that I’m aware of the 30 minute police body cam video but I’ve only watched bits and pieces so if I get something wrong or miss out on something then please just let me know.
I grew up in a really sketchy town and when I was about 12 two of my female friends were walking home at night when a male approached them with pretty clear intentions and thankfully they both got away okay other then being frightened and shaken up. But after that incident pretty much every female in my grade including me received a cellphone from our parents and we were told whenever we were out at night to always be talking on the phone (even if it was pretending) when we seen a man even walking on the opposite side of the street.
I’m incredibly disappointed in him, his actions, his judgement, and his character. There is so many layers as to why this is so troubling so bare with my while I try to break it down
he thought it was okay to sneak up on someone alone in a vehicle at 2am
he thought it was okay to sneak up on a women alone in a vehicle at 2am
he thought it would be funny to see her reaction
he thought it would be funny to break into her car
he laughed when she told him that she suffers from ptsd from being in the military
he thought it would be funny to pull his pants down at someone
he thought it would be funny to pull his pants down to a women
he ignored phone calls and avoided the police to try to get out of this situation
he never told the leafs organization
he thought he would maybe pay a fine and have it all go away with no remorse and with no one ever finding out
Everyone is talking about why this is wrong and rightfully so cause it is but something that no one is talking about is the level of stupidity this took. Him and his friends thought it would be funny to sneak up on someone at 2am in Arizona. What if this women who was rightfully terrified pulled out a gun and shot him? what if the women had shot one of his friends? Every element of this is just ??????
He legitimately thought this was all going to go away like thats how entitled his is. He thought that no one in Arizona would care enough to alert the media which is another ???? because (and correct me if I’m wrong) didn’t the Ottawa Senators uber video happen in Arizona? like some uber driver in Arizona knew what a shit show the sens were and made a profit off it. He was really stupid enough to think this would never come out, even though everyone in Arizona knows who he is even the women in the video said she didn’t recognize him “at first” like she knew who he was after she was able to actually get a good look at him.
Now I’m under the impression that the women wasn’t even going to go to the police about it had he just apologized and he couldn’t even do that! And when she approached his father with it he called her a liar so he was sent the actual video proof to which he never replied to the women again. I think his fathers actions are pretty telling as to why his son has a pretty poor character.
I’m extremely happy that this women filed a report, and that it all came out. I’m happy he got caught and isn’t going to get away with it. I’m happy that the leafs organization seems pissed and to anyone who doesn’t follow the leafs then let me say that in the Kyle Dubas video talking about you could tell that it wasn’t the typical Dubas, also very telling that when the whole Morgan Rielly homophobic slur happened (which he was cleared of by the way, since many never followed up on that story) he stood beside Morgan and made it clear that Morgan was never the victim. He didn’t stand beside Auston yesterday, he made him face the media TWICE in which you could tell he was extremely uncomfortable as he should be. Leafs are pissed and I hope they do more than just strip the C from him, and lets be real from the moment the leafs won the draft lottery Auston was groomed for that C on his chest, he was going to get it.
I hope that he gets into some trouble for this ( I don’t know what can happen legally) by the law and by the leafs. Let’s be real with the fact that the nhl themselves won’t do anything.
I personally believe that the whole “cancelled” culture is extremely toxic, and that us as humans need to allow others to learn from their mistakes and grow because theres a big difference between fucking up and being a bad person (and bad people are the ones who shouldn’t be given second chances). I’ve fucked up in my life and people who do “cancelling” have fucked up to. That being said what he did is a big HUGE fuck up, and I’m sure after this is all settled he’ll come out with a scripted apology about how sorry he is and about how much he has changed since, and you know what? I won’t believe it. Something like this, a fuck up this big is going to take time and perspective because he obviously has walked around for 22 years thinking behaviour like this is okay, and one month of media and fans telling him it isn’t okay isn’t going to change that. But I truly truly hope that one day he wakes up and he fully realizes that not only what he did was wrong but WHY it was wrong. And I hope that if and when that day comes that he wants to give a private and sincere apology to this women and if she chooses to decline that apology I hope that he understands why she did. I hope that he can decide what kind of a person, what kind of a man, and what kind of a role model he wants to be.
