twenty-eight. softball coach & loan officer. born & raised in madison, ga

is the youngest of the kirby clan & definitely the most dependent of them all 

was treated like the baby growing up so essentially got to be the baby all her life

had strong morals and a huge worth ethic because of her father 

she paid for all of her softball gear & softball expenses 

it’s literally the thing in life that kept her sane honestly 

softball is everything too her and she still is very passionate about it to this day 

somehow has taken after her father as working as a loan officer 

let’s be real, there was some pressure for her to take a stable job in town 

and she wasn’t going to reject because she wanted to be close to logan and well, she never knew when austin would be home 

when austin enlisted, jo was incredibly upset 

she took it the hardest and definitely still holds it against him

logan mediated a lot of her emotions but she’s still an emotional baby 

has been trying not to be so dependent on others but old habits die hard 

she lives with @nimetkaplan and they are quite different at times 

meaning nimet is pretty messy and jo is constantly picking up after her ( learning some independence am i right? )

also really close with the maddox family ( @huntermaddcx & @levimaddcx ) 

they were over her house a lot 

they are basically her older brothers as well 

often teases austin about his feelings for @greer-fontanella ( when she is talking to him anyway )

greer is also one of her best friends 

along with @sydneyxjames and of course her sister @logankirby

knows @zeke-dalton by association bc he’s got all her best ladies in his life 

grew up being really close friends with @prescottmatthew‘s sister and is super close to both the kids 

she’s been a standing rock in his life since he’s been in town and does her best to help out all she can 

jo is also super artsy 

she dabbles in paintings but she doesn’t really show them to anyone unless she trusts them 

you can bet her fingers almost always have paint residue on them 

even though she has been scolded at work for that 

jo is the most loyal friend one will ever have until she gets hurt

the woman very rarely forgets

Kat mentally slapped herself a few times still not understanding where her clumsiness was coming from. Looking down at the woman’s outfit, she met her eyes again and gave an apologetic smile offering, “At least let me give you money for what it’ll coast for dry cleaning? Unless you don’t do that, which is fine, I’ll still pay for, say a new outfit? Incase the stains don’t come off?” At times, the raven haired woman preferred that the other got upset and wanted something in return automatically; but then again, it was quite possible Katrina was simply used to people behaving that way from where she was from. Some people in New York or L.A. weren’t always greedy for something in return but, at least those Kat ran into were. You’re definitely going to need more time to adjust to this town, she told herself and handed Jo some napkins she found laying on a table next to them. “I’m sorry again….”

Jo shook her head. “That’s really too much of you to offer. It’s only a spilled drink,” she couldn’t be too upset about it at the end of the day. Jo had let slip a number of drinks in her twenty-something years. It was merely something that happened and while initially upset, there was nothing she could do about it right now. It had happened. “No need to apologize,” she said with a wave of her hand, “This is somethin’ that just happens, lots of people in a small space? A drink is bound to be spilled.” Jo told her with a smile, “I don’t think I’ve seen you ‘round before,” And Jo made a habit of knowing just about everyone with working down at the bank. “I’m Jo.”

If Billie could have opened her mouth any wider she would have eaten the entire congealed mass of cheese fries before her in a single bite. As it was, she plucked a few from the sticky pile and devoured them in one massive chomp, happily masticating the mouthful with closed lips. This was followed immediately by a quiet gulp as, without much pause to take a breath, Billie took another handful. She paused only long enough to flash a brilliant smile as her friend joined her. By now Billie was sure Jo had gotten used to her eating habits. Though she wasn’t sloppy nor did she chew with her mouth open, she inhaled things ravenously. She certainly could have waited until Jo arrived before ordering her appetizer but she was nervous and whenever her courage failed her, she replaced it with sustenance. Even though Jo had long since forgiven her impromptu departure from Madison over a decade ago, Billie’s fortitude wavered each time they met in fear she might unintentionally make another blunder. It was a silly frame of mind but she did not intend to sully their friendship again, not when she spent seven years missing her something fierce. 

“If only all banks were more like Scrooge McDuck’s money vault, I bet it’d be plenty exciting” she mused, cleaning her fingers of any cheese residue with a napkin. “You should apply for the softball position full time, its what you love most” she knew the type of joy being on the diamond brought her friend and she could only fervently pray one day she’d get to pursue it. With a slight sympathetic tilt to her lips she pushed the basket of fries towards her. “You deserve to do something that makes you happy” 

Jo shook her head, laughing softly, “If only they were like that, huh?” She laughed a little more at the thought that Billie brought to her forefront. “I have thought about that,” Jo admitted with her head tipped to the side. If there was anyone that knew her most, it would have to be Billie. Especially when it came to her love for softball. Yet, there was a part of her that would always hesitate to apply for that position full time. Her father had encouraged practicality and well, Logan was a lawyer so she had that covered and Austin enlisted. How was Jo to give up the job she worked at with her father for something not quite as safe as coaching softball position. “I mean it’s not like I don’t have it altogether,” she shrugged her shoulders, “But bein’ a loan officer?” She wrinkled her nose, “it’s what my father wanted.”

Of all the people to be standing before him, he was glad it was Jordan. He wasn’t in the mood for someone who didn’t really know him or the situation at hand. The Kirbys would get it, they had spent enough time over the years with a front side seat to the Maddox family life, beyond his close friends and his brother, there were no others he trusted more. He shrugged a little at her comment, “Aren’t kids leeches? Might as well give in now.” he muttered, elbowing Jordan playfully in the side. “Why jealous you’re not getting these offers from me?”

“Absolutely, I’m jealous,” she teased him back, nudging him with her own elbow. “I mean, c’mon, am I not your favorite Kirby?” She raised a brow at him, feinting offense as if he was going to say she wasn’t. “After all these years and not even a single offer to get me a car,” Jo shook her head at him with a teasing smile, “One of these days you’ll cave to me too, it’s only a matter of time. I just got that whole aging thing goin’ for me. Can’t beat a kid.”

“Well, are you askin’ about why I’m spendin’ more time with him than I am with you, or why I’m spendin’ more time with him than you are with him?” Greer purposefully avoided a direct answer, not really wanting to cause any trouble. Everyone in Madison knew that Greer and Austin were best friends. As much as she adored Jo and Logan, she’d always put Austin first in her life. “I’ve just been all down about this stupid fight with Riggs, so Austin’s been hangin’ out with me. You know he and I are just friends, Jo, always have been. Are you tryin’ to hide your unrequited love for me by pushin’ me off on your brother?” 

Jo rolled her eyes with Greer’s words. She knew the woman had a point. She had yet to see her brother and it had been three weeks since his return. “Just friends,” she found her eyes rolling back again, but this time they paired with a smile. “That’s what you keep tellin’ yourself,” she teased Greer. Regardless of what happened between her brother and Greer, she would be happy for them. “I’m sorry, what happened with Riggs? How did I happen to miss all of that?” Her brow raised, her hand waiving at the thought, “God, I clearly have been too far out of the loop for my own good.” Her brow furrowed, knowing she needed to get her own head out of her ass and pay attention to what was going on with her friends. “I’d never do such a thing,” she teased back in response to Greer, playfully swatting at her friend.

“I come bearing gifts,” Jo stepped into the house in a sing song voice. She was grateful to have known Matthew’s sister and even more grateful to be able to help Matthew out when he needed it. “Do you prefer whiskey or whiskey?” She teased, setting the bottle of whiskey down on the kitchen counter. “I know you know the girls are in good hands with Miss Avery Robinson,” she approached him and wrapped her arms around him with a smile, “but you are in need of a break and that could be read a mile away. If not further.” She admitted to him, “Doesn’t take gossip long to get around in this town,” she had heard through the grapevine that the girls were struggling in school and well, she couldn’t even imagine how Matthew was feeling with everything. “So, we are going to spend a night together. Drinking. Talking. Laughing. Crying. Where ever it goes.”

To say that Jordan kept track of those that didn’t show up to Matthew’s sister’s funeral was an exaggeration, but she did notice when Val didn’t show up after she called to tell her about it. She might not have always been close with Val in the beginning but after the woman’s death the had bonded a little on that phone call. She was more than sure that Val would show up to the funeral. And when she didn’t - that stung Jo more than she would have realized. She wasn’t sure who else noticed, but she certainly did. And to do this, months later, sometimes it consumed her mind as she wandered down the streets of Madison. It caused her to not pay attention, her feet tripping over thin air and knocking into someone. “Oh, heavens,” she muttered, bringing a hand to her head out of embarrassment, “I am so -” she went to apologize, looking up to meet the eyes of the person she ran into. “Wait, Val?”

Four years ago when Billie Dawson returned to down, it started a lot like when her brother Austin returned. She had been so upset over the woman taking off to New York, as her brother enlisting, she cut them off when they returned to town. Jo was notorious for doing just that and yet, it often did not take long for the woman to come to her senses. She wanted these people in her life and their reasons for leaving were personal. For Jo to be upset by them was petty of her and a lesson she was finding hard to learn over the years. “Thanks for meeting me,” she slid into the booth across from Billie with a smile on her face, “I have needed some girl time desperately,” she groaned, “Dad has got me working extra hours down at Wells Fargo and coming up with loans for people is not thrilling work.” She shook her head slowly at the thought, “I mean, I don’t know how I ended up with such a practical job.” Jo admitted with a small shake of her head. She knew how it happened. Her father pushed for it, wanting her to be set for life with something secure and stable. “I am ready for softball practice to start back up again.”

Three weeks, twenty one day, four hours, eight minutes, and twenty three seconds. 

That’s how long he had been he had been home. It’s how long it has been since Jordan had avoided him like the black plague. His heart ached knowing that his decision had left long lasting scars on their relationship. Ones that no amount of sweet talk or gift could fix. He knew she wanted an apology for being so selfish. It was the only thing he couldn’t give her. Austin shook the thought to the back of his mind. He had to focus on the moving forward. This was his hometown and he’d be damned if he couldn’t come back and force himself to fit into the mold designated for him. His sharper edges would be filed down to dust and the issues that led between them would need to fade. Their family needed them both in fighting shape.

Austin settled comfortably on the couch with the soft crackling of the record player. He had just put on Sam Cooke’s album, Night Beat. Cash’s ears peaked up at the light tap on the door. He popped up his place along Austin’s feet. A crinkle formed in his brow at the haste that possessed his lazy pug at this hour. He folded the the page that he had been studying in his bible before leaving it on the table to investigate. “You’re early, Dobbs..” the last name didn’t match the person who stood in the doorway.

“Jo,” her name fell off his lips with such light sorrow and concern. “Is everything okay?” His gaze dropped to the box of pastries from Tatianna’s. “Did I miss someone’s birthday?”

When the door opened, it was clear he was not expecting her. She should have probably texted first but who was to say that he would even want to see her if she merely didn’t ambush him at his own home. “Everything is -” Jo trailed off, unable to lie to her brother. Everything was not fine. No, their relationship was in shambles and that was more than enough reason for salt filled tears to be sitting in the corner of her eyes. “No,” she shook her head, “no one’s birthday.” Jo told him, swallowing hard as she forced herself to meet his gaze. She didn’t know how to even start a conversation like the one they needed to have. “I,” she sucked in air, holding it with thinned lips as she stood in front of him. “I come bearing snacks to help us get through whatever we have to do get through.” Jo straightened her shoulders as she let out the words in a single strand of air. If the words were coherent, she couldn’t tell. Her own head was spinning with the holding of air in her lungs, exhaling so quickly that she thought she might tip over on Austin’s front steps. “I know, I know it’s weeks over due,” Jo was beginning to speak quicker again, “I just, I really, I really didn’t know where to start Austin but I can’t take it any more. You are my big brother. My rock and not having you in my life just really freakin’ sucks, okay?”

Jo wanted to talk to her brother but the longer she kept putting it off, the harder it was to actually approach him and talk about her long standing issue with him enlisting. Was the bitterness something she should have held on to all these years? Probably not. No matter how many times Logan tried to talk her down, there was always some linger resentment that had recently surfaced with his return. Jo wanted his return to be joyous for her, for him, for the both of them. They were family and family was everything, at least it was supposed to be. Hell, even her best friend was spending more time with her brother than she had since his return. That felt wrong. And it was part of what pushed the woman to end up on her brother’s doorstep with a box full of his favorite goodies from Tatiana’s. 

Swallowing her pride to talk to Austin was anything but easy for the brunette. She had become so dependent on her brother’s presence in her life and Logan’s as well, that when Austin enlisted by the hand of their father, she couldn’t help but feel abandoned by him. Mending the relationship would not be an easy fix, she knew that. Even the rap of her knuckles against the door was as weak as her knees. Taking the step to reach out to Austin first was one she had been waiting far too long to do. When the door opened to reveal her brother, she already knew the tears were welling at the corners of her eyes. My god, she missed him.

If her brother were to end up with anyone in Madison, she had always hoped it would be her best friend. How fitting would that be? It was a silly dream that she had but with the two of them spending more time, she could be a little hopeful. “I mean,” she brushed her bangs from over her eyes, “is my life long dream finally coming true or you two just friends still?”

The DNA test had come through and Levi was still stubbornly refusing to admit the possibility that Jessie was his. Yet, there he was sitting with her managing to devour a cheeseburger and fries with a large strawberry ( her, and his, favourite ) milkshake that seemed to be taller than her. Taking a bite of his own cheeseburger, he cast a quick glance over the mass of bags that surrounded them full of clothes and all the things that kids supposedly needed. “You need anythin’ else?” he asked, through a mouthful of food. Kids were damn expensive, there was a reason he didn’t want one. “Car, truck, house?”. That was hilarious, to the kid and she grinned, bringing a small smile to his own lips. “Man, kids are expensive.”

Jordan couldn’t believe Levi had a kid. Growing up with the Maddox brothers, she considered them family just as much as Logan and Austin. Maybe slightly more than Austin since his decision to enlist all those years ago. Who was around to pick up the pieces of a devastated Jordan? Not Austin. She watched as the young girl happily laughed at Levi’s attempt at a joke. It wasn’t a joke. Kids were expensive. She gave a small smile as she turne to face him in the booth, “I can’t believe you’re already offerin’ up houses and cars to this one,” she shook her head, “Normally there’s a lot more steps leading up to those ones.” She was only giving Levi shit.

“If I have to hear the Elmo song one more time,” he rubbed at his forehead, trying to relieve the headache that was building there., “I can’t tell you what I’m going to do to him.”

Jo raised her brow as the man spoke, though she hadn’t been sure if he was speaking to her or just aloud via frustrations. “Is Elmo worse than Frozen?” She inquired with the quick raise of her brow. She thought kids had long moved past the things she grew up on as a kid and moved on to the bigger and better.

How a small town such as this one was throwing her off, Katrina Addams didn’t know. Sure, she’d only been here a few weeks so far but the woman was used to learning a hundred things at once in less time. Regardless, she knew it was time to go out and continue exploring-alone.

But what a mistake that had been. Whether it was her fault from moving too quickly in a slow paced town, or the other’s fault for whatever reason, Katrina’s movement had caused the drink to fall on the others outfit/table/floor. Automatically, out of frustration and embarrassment, Kat covered her face and then quickly looked at the unfortunate soul; their outfit was ruined or at least not as dry as it once was. What a damn klutz Katrina. Like really, come on! Katrina could handle taxis and nonstop commotion all around her in big cities; so why the hell not a towns bar such as this one? “Shit! I am so so sooo damn sorry! Please, let me….um, I’ll pay for the damages or buy you another drink. This is Hopped Fox Brewery right? I mean I know the sign said so outside but…just making sure you know?” The last question wasn’t necessary but Kat needed to keep her lips moving and saying whatever came to mind first. The woman let out a shaky breath, shaking her head adding, “Again, I’m so sorry about that….” she gestured to where she had caused a large spill and knew tonight shouldn’t have been one for going out.

Jo had just been finishing up for the night, Logan having long gone home for the night, but she hadn’t been able to drag herself away from the softball game until it was finished. And Lord, did it drag on longer than it needed to be. It’s not like it wasn’t a new game. From the beginning of March to the end of April, all Jo did was participate in softball and yet, even when the bar was playing a rerun of a game, she couldn’t tear her eyes away from the screen. At least not until liquid wet the clothes she was wearing. She flew from her seat, a squeal pressing her lips apart as she looked at the woman who had spilled the drink on her. Jo’s first reaction was to be terse, to snap at the other person out of pure frustration. She could be a little strong headed, but no, the woman seemed genuinely sorry and it cooled the fire that rushed through her veins in an instant. “It’s,” she paused, looking down at her clothes. She figured they weren’t ruined, but just very wet. “It’s fine,” she tried to give the woman a small smile as her shoulders fell with a sigh. “Nothing a good wash can’t fix.”

“Niiiiimet,” she groaned the length of her roommates name as she picked up a piece of laundry from the floor, “I love you to death,” she told the woman. They were friends, but Nimet was not always the best roommate in terms of cleanliness. “Can you at least throw your clothes into a pile like a normal person? They almost ended up in the trash during my cleaning frenzy,” she was warm hearted toward the woman, tossing the shirt on the back of the couch before finding a spot next to Nimet, “Ugh, I am exhausted, now.” She teased the woman, tipping her head back against the couch. “Do you want to go out tonight?”
