Hey y’all, Laura again. You’re definitely sick of me by now, but this is Greer Fontanella, a 30 year old mess who works at Mr. Quik’s gas station. Below the cut are some tidbits about her if you want to get some insight.

Addi had never really liked Greer’s boyfriend all that much, especially with the baby mama still in the picture. She had a general distrust of people and men who spent too much time with other women like that, usually weren’t all that trustworthy. She frowned at Greer’s statement and shook her head. “I wouldn’t be okay with it. Because if he’s not tellin’ you about it then it sounds like he’s tryin’ to hide somethin’ right?” She looked up at the sky and let her eyes draw pictures in the clouds, something reminiscent of childhood. Addi glanced over at Greer with a giggle and took another drag off the blunt. “Hopefully. I’m gettin’ a little bored of the same old townies.”
“Okay, see, that! That’s what I said, and it’s not like they don’t have a history. I mean, we broke up and he went off and slept with her and they made a baby!” Greer rolled her eyes as she ran a hand through her hair. No matter how many times she wanted things to be perfect, there were always little things popping up like red flags. Granted, most of that was due to her own issues of insecurity, but Greer didn’t want to admit that, and she sure as hell wouldn’t do it right now. “You know what we need? A good weekend girls trip to Atlanta. Go on up to the city and find us a couple rich city boys with deep pockets.”

A small sigh of relief passed through Katrina’s body internally. Smiling though, she nodded towards Greer. “Really sorry though…” Her eyes then drifted to the employee who had quickly started to pick up any pieces that had fallen or wiped away the alcohol. To them, Katrina also apologized and offered an apologetic smile as well. Turning back towards Greer, she titled her head and asked, “A gas station huh? How long have you worked there?” It was then she shook her head letting out a gentle laugh and stretched her hand out to introduce herself as well, “Sorry, I’m Katrina, Katrina Addams. And yeah….quite new actually. Can I buy you another drink? As an apology for your wet jeans?” Couldn’t just say jeans could you? she thought, mentally slapping herself.
Greer watched the woman apologize to the employee, smiling as she did. It was one of those things her mom had always told her to look for: the way a person treated the people who waited on them or helped them check out in a store. There were a lot of people who talked down to her because of her job, but Katrina seemed genuine in her apology. “Yeah, I started at Mr. Quik’s for like four or five years now, I think.” She’d honestly lost track, and the only reason she even knew it was around that time was because of Austin and his stupid resume conversations. “Well, I won’t say no to a free drink, that’s for sure. It’s nice to meet you, Katrina, Katrina Addams,” she teased as she extended her hand to the woman.

Jo rolled her eyes with Greer’s words. She knew the woman had a point. She had yet to see her brother and it had been three weeks since his return. “Just friends,” she found her eyes rolling back again, but this time they paired with a smile. “That’s what you keep tellin’ yourself,” she teased Greer. Regardless of what happened between her brother and Greer, she would be happy for them. “I’m sorry, what happened with Riggs? How did I happen to miss all of that?” Her brow raised, her hand waiving at the thought, “God, I clearly have been too far out of the loop for my own good.” Her brow furrowed, knowing she needed to get her own head out of her ass and pay attention to what was going on with her friends. “I’d never do such a thing,” she teased back in response to Greer, playfully swatting at her friend.
Greer was used to this, honestly, people in Madison always seemed to think there was something more between the two of them than there was. Austin was her best friend, and by him being a male and her being a female, it just made everyone in town want there to be some kind of deeper love connection. Greer shrugged and rolled her eyes right back at Jordan, knowing that she couldn’t say too much to sway her mind other than the absolute truth. “It’s fine, he’s just bein’ Riggs.” She shook her head, chewing on her bottom lip as she considered the last conversation she’d had with the man. “Yeah, earth to Jo! Why are you all locked away in that pretty little head of yours anyway? I miss you.”

Sydney rolled off the couch at the sound of a knock on her door. She hadn’t been expecting anyone to come over, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t the chance that someone would show up at any given time. When she swung the door open to reveal a smug looking Greer, she knew exactly why the brunette was standing at her door. “Easy there, easy,” she teased her friend, stepping back to let her inside before tossing the door shut. “I mean, it’s only been a date and a trip to the Belle Ball and you know he proposed on the first date?” She raised a brow at her, laughter breaking the serious thinning of her lips. “Really though, he’s been great to spend time with.”
“I could’ve told ya he’d be a great date,” she said confidently. “It’s why I set y’all up, Syd. He’s just enough of a gentleman that he’ll treat you right, but not so much of a gent that he won’t give you a good time, if you catch my drift.” Greer winked at her friend. She made herself at home on Sydney’s couch, plopping down onto her back and stretching across it. “Now, tell me everything. Give me all the beautiful, juicy details. I’m goin’ to live vicariously through you.”

The densely populated urban scape blurred quickly outside of their windows. Austin never could quite put a finger on why he loved Savannah but maybe it was the freedom it always seemed to imbue him with. There were far more people there than in Madison. It was easier to get lost in the crowd and just be. Which just so happened to be his favorite pass time with Greer. He loved getting lost with her. Time, space, duty, and manners fell to the waste side while his fantasy played out in technicolor. All day the two endured the enamored glances of onlookers enthralled by their “love”. Austin couldn’t count on one hand how many people just assumed they were a couple. Did they give off that vibe? Was his love sickness so visible to everyone but her? He didn’t know and he refused to dwell on that side of things. Today, he felt freer than he had in the last month. He got to see the better side of retirement and a well earned honorable discharge from the service.
He hummed along with the radio to fill in the obvious silence. Greer didn’t say much the rest of the ride home; which was unlike her. Once Greer had the ground to ramble, there was no stopping her. Not that he would. Austin loved the sound of her voice. A melodic song only for his ears. Austin had reprimand himself not to place a gently hand on her thigh to still the nervousness that inhibited it. “Home sweet home,” he hummed once they parked smoothly into the driveway. His lips twitched up into bemused grin. “You know that string of words are a forecast for some bad juju, Greer.” Austin turned to look at her. “Does this have to do with your radio silence or is that a coincidence?”
“I know, I’m sorry,” she said quickly, reaching out to put her hand on his arm. She didn’t want him to worry, she just didn’t know any other way to start a conversation. Blurting out that she’d just realized she was in love with him was somehow not as easy as she’d thought it would be, and Austin deserved a proper conversation. Albeit one that was going to go fairly quickly if she had any idea what would happen. Greer didn’t, though, and that’s how the words began tumbling out of her mouth as soon as her eyes met his and her lungs filled with a slow, steady breath. “Austin Kirby, I’ve gone and fallen in love with you. I know it’s crazy, and everyone in town is always teasin’ us, but I can’t explain how I just figured it out. I don’t know why I was so dumb for so long, all I know is that I saw you holdin’ that baby today and it clicked.” Greer took another breath and cleared her throat, going into more detail about how it all made sense, about how Austin was her person and so much more than her best friend if she was really thinking about it. She started talking with no intention of stopping, probably in an attempt to drown out any uncertainty or nerves she was harboring that maybe he wouldn’t feel the same way.

“Tell me,” she groaned, “why have you been spending more time with Austin than with me?” She raised a brow in a teasing manner. If her brother were to end up with anyone in Madison, she had always hoped it would be her best friend. How fitting would that be? It was a silly dream that she had but with the two of them spending more time, she could be a little hopeful. “I mean,” she brushed her bangs from over her eyes, “is my life long dream finally coming true or you two just friends still?”
“Well, are you askin’ about why I’m spendin’ more time with him than I am with you, or why I’m spendin’ more time with him than you are with him?” Greer purposefully avoided a direct answer, not really wanting to cause any trouble. Everyone in Madison knew that Greer and Austin were best friends. As much as she adored Jo and Logan, she’d always put Austin first in her life. “I’ve just been all down about this stupid fight with Riggs, so Austin’s been hangin’ out with me. You know he and I are just friends, Jo, always have been. Are you tryin’ to hide your unrequited love for me by pushin’ me off on your brother?”

Greer’s heart had been racing ever since they left Savannah. She couldn’t figure out how to quiet it, either, because the realization that she’d fallen in love with her best friend along the way was somehow too much for her to wrap her mind around. It had been clear to her the moment she saw him holding a baby. Greer Fontanella wanted to give Austin Kirby babies of his own. She wanted to be the one he raised children with, the one he kissed good night every single night. She was head over heels in love with her best friend, and she had no idea how he’d react to it.
When he pulled the truck into his driveway, she knew she had no other choice but to tell him now. She’d given Bree the advice enough to know it by heart. Give him the chance to decide. Straightening her back as she sat in the passenger seat, Greer smoothed her hands over the material of the sundress she’d worn to visit Austin’s friend up in Savannah. Eyes falling to the strappy sandals she was wearing, Greer cleared her throat. “Austin,” she said quietly, “we gotta talk about somethin’,” she started. Her voice was softer than usual, and she couldn’t hide the way her hands were wringing themselves in her lap as she looked over to her best friend.

How a small town such as this one was throwing her off, Katrina Addams didn’t know. Sure, she’d only been here a few weeks so far but the woman was used to learning a hundred things at once in less time. Regardless, she knew it was time to go out and continue exploring-alone.
But what a mistake that had been. Whether it was her fault from moving too quickly in a slow paced town, or the other’s fault for whatever reason, Katrina’s movement had caused the drink to fall on the others outfit/table/floor. Automatically, out of frustration and embarrassment, Kat covered her face and then quickly looked at the unfortunate soul; their outfit was ruined or at least not as dry as it once was. What a damn klutz Katrina. Like really, come on! Katrina could handle taxis and nonstop commotion all around her in big cities; so why the hell not a towns bar such as this one? “Shit! I am so so sooo damn sorry! Please, let me….um, I’ll pay for the damages or buy you another drink. This is Hopped Fox Brewery right? I mean I know the sign said so outside but…just making sure you know?” The last question wasn’t necessary but Kat needed to keep her lips moving and saying whatever came to mind first. The woman let out a shaky breath, shaking her head adding, “Again, I’m so sorry about that….” she gestured to where she had caused a large spill and knew tonight shouldn’t have been one for going out.
Greer had watched the woman walk in, but she had finally looked away just as a drink fell to the floor near her. Looking down at her jeans, she waved her hand at the woman’s comments. “It’s fine, really. Trust me, you work in a gas station long enough and you learn to let just about anything fly.” Greer took the woman in, smiling at her. “Yeah, it is. Things around here are pretty easy to find when it comes to readin’ the signs. We don’t do a lot of hidin’ or anything.” She knew she wasn’t from around here, which only made Greer more interested to learn about wherever she’d come from. “I’m Greer. “If I have to hear the Elmo song one more time,” he rubbed at his forehead, trying to relieve the headache that was building there., “I can’t tell you what I’m going to do to him.”
“I don’t know which song you’re talkin’ about, Mister, but I’m sure it’s just as terrible as you’re sayin’,” Greer said, shifting her weight as she crossed her arms over her chest. “I never did like that whole Sesame Street thing. I used to babysit this girl who would watch it nonstop and it was a nightmare.”

Over the last ten years Addison had started smoking and drinking a little less than she had in high school, deciding that part of being a semi-responsible adult was being slightly more sober. But she still liked to enjoy a blunt every now and again so when Greer had mentioned it, Addi was quick to supply the weed and meet her out on the farm. She laid on the hood of the car with her and took the joint when it was offered, bringing it to her lips and taking a hit, letting it rest easily between her fingers as she glanced up at the clouds above them. “Why? You and Riggs fightin’ again?” She looked over at her friend and paused a minute before she thought of something and then nodded, taking another hit and handing the joint back to Greer. “Javi told me there’s a new guy starting at the Inkspot in a couple a days. That’ll free up some of my time and if we’re lucky he’ll be hot and down to fuck a co-worker in the break room.” She giggled softly, the pot starting to make her head a little lighter.
Greer couldn’t help but groan at the question, nodding a little. “I found out he’s been over at his baby mama’s house doin’ all sorts of little projects for her. He says it’s no big deal, but I’m really annoyed at him doin’ it without tellin’ me. Like they’re just over there playin’ house and I’m supposed to be okay with it?” She rolled her eyes, shifting so that her head was resting back against the windshield comfortably. “Ooh, I hope he’s a babe for your sake. A good work fuck buddy is such a rare blessing these days. I mean, at least your coworkers are semi-attractive to begin with, that makes it a little nicer, huh?” She mostly worked with older men and women, people well beyond her range of attraction, and she would live vicariously through any sexcapades Addi felt like sharing.

Greer took the first long drag off the joint in her hand, smiling down at it as she slowly blew the air out of her mouth and up into the sky. She wasn’t a regular drug user by any means, but there were just some days she found herself in need of a little fun. Addi was the one person she smoked with, and honestly, Greer didn’t talk about it much with anyone else. Leaning her head back onto the windshield of her old beat up hatchback, she sighed and held the joint out to the blond at her side. “Tell me something that doesn’t absolutely suck. Anything, I just need to feel happy for a minute until this kicks in.”
