Another Social Dilemma
You’ve probably seen the Netflix special “The Social Dilemma” and if you haven’t yet, definitely give it a shot. Social Media and the companies themselves are not going away. The same can be said about trolls, hackers, cyberbullies, internet thieves. Software engineers created like buttons, infinite scrolls, and ways to algorithmically provide you digital content you may really like. But as these tools were being created, the realm of anonymity grew to utilize free speech as a weapon and attack others who wouldn’t have the slightest clue of how to deal with it. Media professionals may be groomed to deal with backlash, know what to say to disarm a hostile person, or know to ignore them entirely. However, a vast majority of people have never went through media training to deal with people who just want to watch the world burn. It is important this generation to better prepare the next generation of what’s to be expected from a person who wants to be anonymous and exercise their free speech to harm another person. This social dilemma is just as important as what social media companies are planning to unravel next.
