the road to camp was muddy, narrow, and way too quiet. the taxi driver stopped before the road, refusing to go further. you walked alone down the muddy path, bag slung over your shoulder. the sign ahead looked scrambled, like your dyslexia was macking you. a cold breeze rolled off the dirty lake behind you. the water began to churn… darkening to a dark, sickly brown. a doglike snout broke the surface of the water, followed by a pair of glowing eyes.
the creature rose high above you, dripping blood from its teeth. you stumbled back, falling straight over an overgrown tree root. the monster stalked towards you, slow and deliberate, purely for the scare factor. a metallic shink cut through the air behind you. a curly headed dark blonde boy sprinted past, his sword glowed bronze. he struck the monster once, clean through its neck, it exploded with ash. he turned to you and said, “i’m percy. welcome to camp,” just before you passed out.
the infirmary was black when you woke, red light bled through the windows. the sheets were cold enough to give you frostbite, and the air smelled of old leather and dust. the door slowly creaked open, and a hooded figure stepped inside, silent and heavy. his skin looked cracked, ancient, almost brittle. you froze, unsure if you were dreaming. when he spoke, his voice seemed older than the room itself.
"a rising tide will catch your shadow off guard. its pull will drag you deeper than you ever meant to go. and when the waters settle, your name will not surface unchanged."
you stared at him, more distracted by his skin than his prophecy. “hey man, you really need a dermatologist.” you suggested. he vanished in a storm of black smoke. you jolted awake.
the infirmary was coloured this time, there were yellow walls, blue curtains. the red from outside was replaced with sunlight. you followed the sound of voices down a hallway. percy stood in front of a man in a wheelchair. the man's expression was calm, patient, almost fatherly. “you must understand—bringing a new camper across the boundary is no small thing. it’s dangerous for you both.” his tone wasn’t scolding, just concerned. percy threw his hands up. “but he needed help! and he came just like half the kids at camp do. monsters were already after him!”
the man sighed softly, a small smile tugging his lips. “i know, my boy. and you did what your heart told you. that is rarely the wrong choice.” then he noticed you. then chiron looked up and noticed you in the doorway. his expression brightened immediately, warm and welcoming.
“ah. our new arrival.” he gestured for you to step inside. “you gave us quite a scare, but you’re safe now. percy, would you show him around camp? afterward, head straight to your cabin.” percy stood up, brushing off his jeans. you were a little shorter than him, and he gave you a small, reassuring smile. “c’mon,” he said, nodding toward the hallway. you followed him down the stairs of the big house, the bright sun shone brightly.
percy gestured around like a tour guide who’d been forced into this job. twelve cabins arranged in a u‑shape. some looked normal. some looked like they were designed by a pyromaniac architect. one was literally glowing. “your cabin depends on your parent,” percy said. you blinked. “my mom? she’s in houston.” percy gave you a look like he's seen this before. “no. your other parent. the god one.” you really tried to keep up, you couldn’t.
“so… who’s my dad” you ask. “well you need to be claimed–usually it takes a couple days... sometimes weeks, some kids haven't even been claimed.” he says, then explained how the entire claiming process works. “so... i haven't been claimed–i just have to wait” you say, stopping and looking up at percy. “so where do i stay?” you ask percy. he smiles and leads you to this normal(ish) looking cabin, and leads you inside. it was packed–to say the least, bunks from bottom to top. it was bigger on the inside than it was on the outside. “this is hermes cabin! god of travellers, he houses the unclaimed.” by the time you had finished unpacking your bag, the bell for dinner had chimed.
you walked out on your own, but there percy was, waiting for you. you walked up to him, looking up at him. you walked to the dining pavilion. “so.. i don’t think you should sit with the hermes kids, they steal.” he said simply. he invited you to sit with him instead. “i sit alone” he said. “why don't you sit with anyone?” percy smiles down at you. “i’m a forbidden child... son of poseidon... well. after ww2, poseidon, zeus and hades decided to never have a child... they were too powerful! but... poseidon had me... zeus had thalia grace, she joined the hunters of artemis, so she’s not really a demigod anymore. we’ve never had a hades kid... or we think.”
"child, the veil thins. shadows stir, and only you can set things right. walk without fear—my realm watches over you."
you crumpled to the floor. the voices suddenly stopped. and you could finally focus on seeing everyone, staring directly at you. you stand up and look around, like you were frozen from embarrassment. percy whispers "y/n! are you–" he stops, a glowing black helm hoovered above your head, the symbol of hades. the dining pavilion erupted with whispers. percy laughs out loud. "y/n... your... you've been claimed by hades."
the pavilion fell silent as the dark helm fades from your head, surrounding you with a red and black mist. percy grabbed your arm before you stumbled again. campers around you whispered like you were a walking bad omen. your head was pounding, like shadows were trying to break your skull to get in. percy grabbed your arm and led you out of the pavilion, blocking you from all the campers who were staring at you. the night air felt ten times more cool then before. the echo of the voice still remained engraved in your mind, repeating over and over.
percy kept looking at you, like he expected you to crumble to dust, you didn't. you just felt... wrong, like something shifted into you without permission. shadows intertwined through your feet and you walked. percy pretended not to notice, but you saw the tension in his jaw.
chiron summoned you and percy before sunrise. the big house felt different, like the walls knew something you didn't. chirons expression was grim and old, "the veil weakens," he said, voice tight. "somethings stirs between the earth." your stomach twisted at his words. percy stepped closer to you, like he could protect you from the words. "y/n... the oracle of Delphi calls you.". you head pounded as you walked up the stairs to the attic.
"hearken, child of shadow and light, when the veil thins in the dead of night, the earth shall quake, the heavens weep, till the lost flame from darkness leaps.
seek the path where fates entwine, for in your hands, the stars align. beware the depths where silence sings, and trust not all that darkness brings."
percy conversed with chiron, defending you with fire you would never expect. two others needed to accompany you on this quest. percy volunteered as one of your companions, you didn't really know anyone else at camp, so you gave the choice to percy. percy chose a hephaestus kids, kaelan a wary boy whose presence stirred unease. the quest seemed easy on paper:
you were drawn by the prophecy and the growing threat of the veil weakening between worlds. something ancient and dangerous stirs beneath the earth, threatening to spill into the mortal realm. your quest is to find the source of this disturbance and stop it before it consumes everything.
on the road, monsters found you easier and faster than they should've, percy fought them off with his sword like it was attached to his hands. you fought them either... really tiring rock throwing powers. boulders and rocks thrown at there faces, not killing them. just helping percy defeat them. shadows and spirits curled around your feet every time you were scared. percy noticed every time, he didn't make comments, but he stared. kaelan kept a wary distance from you, using his mechanical skills to create death traps in the trees to defend himself. he kept a wary distance from you... but you didn't blame him.
the nights were cool, but percy stayed awake till you fell asleep. he claimed it was to keep watch but you didn't believe him. he walked besides you instead of infront of you. he asked about how life was before camp, you talked about movies, he liked action. you liked horror. you caught him staring when he thought you couldn't see him. he smiled more when he was talking to you, you didn't know what to do with that.
percy teased you about your terrible aims when throwing boulders, you teased him about his dirty hair... which was kinda cute. kaelan groaned evertime you two bickered (so constantly). you noticed the way percys eyes attend every time he looked at you. he started noticing the way shadows bent and flowers died around you when you were upset. neither of you talked about it, but the silence between you two felt pumped with energy. like gasoline waiting for a spark.
you walked down an old abandoned highway with your crew when a monster ambushed you. percy got thrown off the highway. nearly getting taken out. panic surged through your stomach like a tsunami. your powers took over, the shadows wrapped around the monster, swallowing the monster and burning him up. percy and kaelan looked up at you, like you were terrifying and brilliant all at once. you and kaelan helped him up, he held onto you for a little to long.
the closer you got to the entrance the cooler the air became. voices from cracks in the ground whispered at you. percy still stood next to you, close enough for your shoulders to brush. you weren't sure if it was for your comfort or for his. kaelan stood closer to you guys this time, staring at you guys. who wouldn't be looking, the chemistry was crazy. the shadows around you guys became sharper. you felt like you were walking towards something inevitable.
as you approached the entrance to the underworld, the air grew colder and heavier. you entered through a shadowy fissure in the earth, the veil between worlds thinning with every step. the flickers of the dead became clearer, their hollow eyes following your every move, like they could see something in you. percy stayed close, stepping in front of you whenever fear rooted you to the spot. the underworld seemed to pull at you, a silent call from the depths, like it was bringing you home. you reached the final monster by navigating a labyrinth of shadows and whispers, guided by fleeting visions and your growing powers. the guardian stood as the last barrier, a formidable presence guarding the path forward. percy grabbed your hand to anchor you, steadying your resolve. you didn’t pull away.
the final guardian is bound to protect the underworld’s secrets and prevent any who might disrupt the balance. it sees your presence as a threat to the fragile order between life and death. the guardian fights not out of malice, but duty — a last line of defense against chaos.
the final guardian struck you with with his claws before you could think, percy jumped infront of you. He collapsed, breathe slow, skin getting more pale as he lay there for longer. you screamed his name, your anger exploding. you attacked the guardian with all you had, fueled by the anger of seeing percy so hurt. shadows surged like a storm around your feet, wrapping around the guardian. you let out a loud, blood curdling, demonic scream, the sound ripping out of you. the monster fell to the ground before crumpling to the floor and dissolving to black ash. you ran to percy immediately, picking him up and running back out of the underworld, kaelan close behind you. percy tried to make a joke, his voice brittle. you still laughed, releasing how much percy meant to you.
you set up camp by an abandoned warehouse, feeding percy tiny drops of ambrosia. you held his hand till he fell asleep. kaelan watched silently "he really likes you..." he said smiling at you two. "he can't stop talking about you." you felt guilt twist in your stomach, you felt fear coil in your throat, looking down at percy, his curly hair coiled across his eyes. in his sleep, he whispered your name like it was a promise, you whispered back like it was a prayer. around you, the shadows became softer. that night you didn't sleep.
when you were back at camp, your feelings didn't though. camp felt different now — brighter, louder, more alive. percy found you, sitting on the pier by the lake, dangling your toes in the water. he looked really nervous which was rare for him. you felt your heart shutter as he sat next to you "hey y/n I just wanted to say, ive never met anyone like you..." you looked down at the water "percy... you've also changed me forever, you make me feel less alone..." the air between you two shifted.
percy shiver closer to you, slow and careful. you didn't move away. the lake reflected the fading light like molten gold. the shadows around you curled gently, almost protective. percy smiled — that soft, crooked, but cute, smile. your brought him into a deep kiss, he kissed you back like hes been waiting for this the entire time. The world felt steady for the first time.
this entire quest was over, but its echos lingered. you and percy stand stronger, bound by shared trials and newfound love (and power). both of you are knows as the "forbidden couple"... were trying to ignore there cousins... although hades has talked to percy about "protecting his son". same goes for poseidon, he came down and... tried to drown you. but he was nice! but you and percy remained strong, unbreakable.
