Good Vibes HERE
And that’s the most frustrating thing about depression. It isn’t always something you can fight back against with hope. It isn’t even something — it’s nothing. And you can’t combat nothing. You can’t fill it up. You can’t cover it. It’s just there, pulling the meaning out of everything. That being the case, all the hopeful, proactive solutions start to sound completely insane in contrast to the scope of the problem. It would be like having a bunch of dead fish, but no one around you will acknowledge that the fish are dead. Instead, they offer to help you look for the fish or try to help you figure out why they disappeared. (x)
This is actually a really good way to explain it, I think.
I WILL NEVER NOT REBLOG THIS
This is why people who are currently experiencing depression should not define depression to people. Depression is not “nothing” You cannot feel nothing. By emoting that you feel nothing, you are feeling SOMETHING. By having a reaction to your feelings of “nothing” you are feeling something. You have no idea what nothing means. Nothing cannot effect anything. The very CONCEPT of nothing goes against all of the descriptors here. Nothing isn’t a concept you can move or feel or see.
but that’s what being depressed is about. Depression clouds your judgement and understanding of a situation and makes you feel like you are feeling nothing. Feeling like you are feeling nothing is NOT feeling nothing.
Fish being dead is an irreversible and unchanging situation. Being depressed is not. It might feel like it is while under the influence of depression, but it isn’t. That is the power of influence. This is why people hopped up on drugs jump out of windows thinking they can fly. Facts do not change with mental influence.
"My fish are dead" "oh I’ll help you find them"
"I am depressed" "oh ill help you find your depression" ???? ????????
no one says that. maybe you mean “I’ll help you find hope”? “I’ll help you find WHY you are depressed”? that already breaks the analogy, but its the closest I can think of that relates at all. That should be proof enough that this is a flawed way of thinking built on the influence of depression.
depression is not a dead fish. depression is not a permanent incurable, unchanging situation. depression is not nothing. All of those are what depression makes you FEEL like it is. All those people you reference here are coming up with (mostly flawed) attempts at helping you take off your shit- tinted glasses and enjoy something again. Those people aren’t trained therapists. Those people do not realize that depression feels like a dead fish to you. They are doing their best to help you in your situation and you are simply going “nope, I am beyond help”.
Don’t be surprised when a lot of those people leave you for that. It isnt YOUR fault that you feel beyond help, but it isn’t their fault for not understanding that you are under the influence of depression and what that makes you feel like.
This would be an excellent comic if you were using it to describe how a person with depression MIGHT feel. You may feel like you have a bunch of dead fish and no one can do anything at all to help you with them, but the truth is when you tell people you are depressed and they offer advice or help, it has much more use than you think it does when you look at it under the influence of depression. When you refuse to look at anyone’s suggestions or help seriously due to the influence of depression, you are blindly inhibiting yourself from feeling better in any way.
You could look at these people with their “stupid” advice and say “hey, these people care enough that they are offering anything they can think of to help me with my situation. Even if these things don’t make me feel better, the thought that they are trying makes me feel better and makes me want to try to break out of this feeling too”. This might be a lot for a depressed person to do, but that is what I am asking you try. You need to regain consciousness of yourself and your surroundings. You need to become lucid.
When a friend comes to you and tells you they are depressed. Think about this comic. This might be how they feel, and it might be a situation where telling them “Well I will help you find hope” will make them angry or upset at your “lack of understanding”. However, that does not mean that they cannot find hope or that you cannot help them. Sure it is harder to help a person who is unconscious to reality and their surroundings, but its possible for you to help that person. Even if just a little bit.
Don’t approach them about their depression like you understand them. Perhaps even admit that you do not understand what is going on inside their head. Tell them that you want to be there for them and support them in any way you can, and try your hardest to do that. Spend time with them. Send them messages. Let them spend time alone. Distract them from themselves. Take them out to do things that activates their sensors. Help them become aware of their own confusion. Help them become lucid. Then they can begin to help themselves.
If you approach me now in my ask box and tell me any of the following: “you don’t know what it feels like” “You have never dealt with this” “you have never dealt with someone else suffering this” “you dont know what you are talking about”, you are wrong. one hundred percent wrong. You might even be under the influence of depression telling you that I am wrong. You are wrong. You aren’t dead fish.

Toon Link squad ⊟
Still not tired of finding and sharing custom Amiibos, like this new wave of photos from Toon Link owners. My fave is definitely the classic Link from the OG Legend of Zelda, painted by Adam Soltys. The other figures come from A Tattoo Monster, Pixel Dash, Masterworksall, and The Garden of Everything.
