Dani giggled as he spun her around and had to hold her hands out to regain her balance as he set her back down. “Surprise! I transferred to the fire department here.” She gave him a sheepish grin and shrugged slightly. “Jersey just wasn’t the same without you and Mom and Dad are messes. Besides I just really missed my big brother.”

“You transferred here?” he repeated with disbelief, unable to stop smiling at her. “Well duh, no place is the same without me,” he joked, hugging her again. “I missed you too okay. I’m glad you’re here.”

“My mom used to tease me mercilessly about you and Nate. She knew I had a crush on you, so the more time we spent together the more she would tease. Dad always hated it, he wanted to pretend that I would never pass the boys have cooties phase.” She said with a laugh, flushing slightly, wondering why she’d chosen to admit that, of all things. “I hope things change. I like it here, I don’t want to leave.” She didn’t herself know if she meant town, or sitting there on the couch curled up against his side, but she wasn’t in the place to put too much thought into anything that she was saying. She took another sip of the daiquiri, glancing down at the blender to see that it was already half-way gone, and her buzz was growing stronger by the minute. She focused her attention on the screen for a few minutes, unable to stop herself from laughing. “’Go web go!’ is my favorite quote from this entire movie.”

As he listened to her speak, Josh’s brows raised in amusement. Turning his head slightly to look down at her, he flashed her a dorky half smile. “You had a crush on me?” he teased lightly, grinning even more as her cheeks reddened slightly. “I like it here too,” he murmured softly, taking another sip of his drink as she did. There was no denying the fact that it was starting to hit him, but obviously not as quickly as it had her considering he hadn’t drunk as much as her yet. “That’s your favourite quote?” he laughed. “I like go get em tiger. but i’m pretty sure that’s from the second movie. Maybe.”

Dani had parked herself on a bench as she pulled her planner from her purse, thumbing to the correct week and double checking the day she was supposed to start at the fire station. As she nodded to herself and slid the planner back in her bag, she glanced up and noticed a familiar shape as he left a store. Standing up quickly she grabbed her bag and took off at a fast walk, calling his name as she went. “JOSH.” She grinned as he paused and she dropped her bag and wrapped her arms around his neck. “So this is seclusion, huh?”

It took Josh a few long seconds to figure out who it was who had called out to him, but as soon as he did his eyes widened and he smiled, moving towards her and holding his arms out to welcome her embrace. “Dani?” he beamed, giving her a tight squeeze and lifting her up off the ground for a moment before setting her back down. “This is it. What are you doing here?” he asked with a laugh.

“Gross!” She said as she pulled her hand back, wiping her hand on his sleeve before she stuck her tongue out at him. “Damn straight.” She wore a self-satisfied smirk on her lips as he agreed to her no good decisions rule, the smirk devolving into a laugh at his words. “No, you never did. Summer’s were always my favorite, the countryside looked beautiful, it was warm, there was always so much to do. Sometimes I really miss it.” She let herself be pulled against his side, resting her head on his shoulder as the movie started. “Things could definitely be worse in about a hundred ways so I think it’s pretty good.”

Flashing her a satisfied grin, Josh just shrugged, taking another large sip of the drink. Listening to her speak about Summer he smiled softly, resting his cheek against the top of her head. “I miss it too..” he admitted softly, looking up at the tv but not really paying attention to it even as the movie started. “Considering everything that’s been happening in this town you’re not wrong there..” he said, giving her a gentle squeeze. Even though he had been bitten by Adelaide, after hearing about what had happened to the DeLuca boy he was more than happy to accept the fact that what had happened with Ade wasn’t that bad. Which was why it was so easy for him to forgive her. At the end of the day, he wasn’t dead. He was sitting on a lounge with his best friend, and that made him happier than ever.

“I bear it so they don’t have to.”

“That’s.. a really admirable thing to do, man.” Josh said with a half smile. He understood completely. After losing his brother he did try to keep together somewhat for his parents and sisters sake.. not that he did a good job at it due to the fact that he just isolated himself so they wouldn’t have to see how broken he really was. Thinking back on it made him feel incredibly guilty, and he wished he could be more like the man standing in front of him. “How did you do it though?”

“Stop blaming me for your mistakes!”

“I’m not blaming anyone for my mistakes! What happened is on me. No one else, just me.” Josh snapped, running a hand through his hair and taking a step back. “I just- I need some air.” he huffed, turning and walking out the door.

“No more secrets.”

Lowering his eyes, Josh nodded. “I know.. and I promise you there won’t be.. but Cat.. I still can’t talk about what happened to Nath. It’s not a secret.. it’s not anything I’m hiding I just physically can’t. It hurts too much, and talking about it won’t make it better. It will just make things worse.”

“Woah woah. Dude what? You do realise that you’re not actually Spiderman, right? You haven’t been bitten by some radioactive spider. If you try and take down that bull it will go all RAWRR and you will get stabbed. Heck, even I would get stabbed. It has some seriously sharp horns.”

Standing in one of the aisles of the small grocery store he often visited, Josh was seriously considering whether or not he needed to buy another massive tub of milo just yet. His current one still had a couple of days worth in it, but it was whether or not he wanted to come back here again so soon. After checking his bank account, he decided the milo could wait and instead opted for a bag of lolly snakes, paying for them quickly before leaving the store. He walked down the street for what was only a couple of meters before he heard someone behind him call out his name.

“Shhhh. No adult-ing. No good decisions.” She said putting her hand over his mouth, determined to forget about each and every adult decision she had ever made. “Do it! I’m not surprised that you did that. I know how convincing you can be, you always convinced me to do all the things I knew I shouldn’t do when I was a kid.” Her parents had always acted like they hated it, but she knew that they’d been happy she’d found someone who could convince her to do all of the things she was scared of. She’d been so different then, compared to who she was now. She shuffled over slightly, covering both of them with the blanket before tucking her feet against her side, pressing her arm against Josh’s. “If we’re gonna go out at least we’re going out drunk as shit, watching cheesy Spider-Man movies.”

Josh raised a brow as she put her hand over his mouth, letting out a muffled laugh before licking her hand to get her to remove it. “Fine fine. No good decisions,” he surrendered with a smirk, holding up his hands defensively. “I think I might,” he grinned, rolling his eyes playfully. “I didn’t have to work very hard to convince you though,” he pointed out with a laugh. As she covered them both with the blanket and shuffled closer, Josh wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer and taking another sip of his blender. “Perfect way to go, right?” he grinned.

“I warned you!” She said with a laugh, taking another sip herself. “You stop tasting it after a few sips. My teeth are already numb.” She smiled, tilting her head to the side as she could already feel the buzz working its way through her body, proving just how strong she’d made the drink. “I’ve seen him! Seriously, it’s weird. I almost went up to him to ask if it was him. Unfortunately, I don’t think it is but if he doesn’t go as Spider-Man for Halloween, I will be so disappointed.” She blew him a kiss at his compliment before pulling her phone out, quickly googling a good one. “Here, this will be good. Except we’re not chugging our drinks when Peter gets bitten because I’d like to survive tonight. But, we have take a drink when MJ screams, someone dies, there’s slo-mo, or Norman Osborn rages out or talks to himself. We drink when we see a camera, a new mask, that’ll fuck us right up, a newspaper, a computer screen with high-tech animation, and we drink when someone says Peter, Osborn, science shit, spider, or Spider-Man. I don’t know if we’ll survive this either way but here goes nothing!” She said, clinking her blender against Josh’s.

“I’m not sure your teeth being numb is a good thing..” he said with a laugh, taking another sip regardless. “You have? So I’m not crazy? Good!” he added excitedly. “I feel like I should befriend him just to force him to dress up as Spider-Man. I can be very convincing you know. I once had a bald friend who I convinced to dress up as Aang from Avatar. It was great,” he laughed again, taking another sip from his blender. “Alright, lay it on me, and give me some of that blanket.” he beamed as she googled a game, shuffling slightly to get comfy next to her. Nodding as she read out the rules, Josh couldn’t help but laugh. “We’re definitely going to die,” he said, “but cheers.”

“Watching the stars usually trips me out though. I start thinking about what could be out there and how we’re so tiny in comparison and it freaks me out.”
