I really can’t under stress how for TWENTY YEARS transmisogynistic Bridget jokes were inescapable. You would come across jokes about Bridget being a trap before you even knew what guilty gear was. The problem with that was NOT that people who didn’t play GG were “fans of Bridget. “Tourism” in that sense is not a real fucking issue, and no one cared about it then. The problem was the inescapable transmisogyny. But due there not having been as many gg games for a while and Bridget not showing up in the ones that were there, she fell out of popularity a bit, and mother characters like Astolfo took her place as THE character for shitty transmisogynistic jokes.
And of course with characters like Astolfo and gwyndolyn and chihiro and the like, peoppe started to find more progressive sounding ways of being transmisogynistic about them. It’s actually transphobic to recognize the transmisogyny of them, you see. Really it makes more sense to read them as transmasc, don’t you know. They “identify as men.” The people who say this shit then go back to jerking it to porn of the character that plays on the “ypu though this was a girl but HE has a penis” shit.
So before Bridget was added to strive, I was hoping it didn’t happen. I didn’t want to see all that shit happen again. But she was added to strive, and none of that happened because she was written to be explicitly trans. The pretense was actually dropped. The thing which never happens with these kinds of characters actually happened. Sure there were some people trying to deny it, but they were laughed out. It seemed like people, even tme people who would normally be partaking in all the transmisogynistic bullshit were happy she was explicitly trans. And then they remembered they hate trans women.
See some young trans girls saw an explicitly trans character in a popular game who was well liked and not designed like a caricature. Some of them even tried out the game. And with fighting games there have always kind of been two fan bases, peoppe who play competitively and people who play the single player story. There’s overlap, but a distinction between people who think the story mode is just a way to sell the game to people who can’t play well and people who love story modes but cant do a quarter circle does exist. But some were even learning the game seriously, because like I said, there is overlap. And slowly ypu saw more and more complaints about them. A lot of the usual being too sexual or too cringe that’s aimed at trans women in any community. That’s unfortunately normal. Plenty of fighting game scenes love to say they are welcoming to trans women, but what that usually means is they are cool with the few established players who transitioned after already being good at the game.
And since accusations of “tourism” is the big thing now, especially with anime and anime adjacent things, that stared up too. The accusation is always stupid. It started with chuds complaining about their being progressive fans, and then those progressive fans decided to throw the accusation back as of who the “real” fans of a cartoon is matters. So obviously all the new Bridget fans are “tourists” a real issues that matters. It doesn’t matter that Bridget has always been popular outside of dedicated gg fans, especially with the “are traps gay” crowd, or how that crowd had always accused the people who saw Bridget as trans in the past of being fake fans too.
And ke they twist themselves into pretzels so that anything Bridget is bad. She gets merch? She gets 80% of the merch! (No one will actually count) She’s going to be in dual rulers? Why isn’t an actually important character going to get in! (Character importance is an innate quality and not the result of writing decisions) And then of course while dual rulers was airing everybody like her actual role in the narrative, because since strive she’s actually been a good character. And she gets jobbed so she’s not even in the final climactic fight as if to appeal to loreheads and powerscalers. And then barely a month passes, a we’re back to “it should have been an important character instead”. The fact that Bridget isnt important in the grand scheme of gg’s story actually made her a more thematically appropriate choice, given Nerville’s claimed motivation of caring about less powerful people who can’t defend themselves from gears, and Unika believing him. That it’s someone who isn’t one of the most powerful and important people in the world that starts to get through to Unika is kind of important. And if your complaint is that Unika should have met a gear who helped her unlearn the hatred of gears Nerville taught her, I would ask if you watched the show because that’s Sin, the other titular dual ruler.
JJK season 3 is airing now, and Kirara is pretty popular right now. You’ve got some people being transphobic, but they are not the inescapable majority. I don’t think, fwiw, that this will turn out the same way as post strive Bridget, because I’ve read the JJK manga, and I already know that Kirara will never get enough focus for people to be angry. She has already done anything important she will do in the story. The trans woman will never be important enough for it to be a problem. Trans women are not allowed to be important. That’s bad. That’s not allowed. It will make real trans women feel like they’re important and matter. And that is not allowed.
