Prompt 13

The only class that I take that involves writing, aside from this class, is UNI. I have been and will continue to use the writing process that I've learned from this class in that class. One thing I've always struggled with was getting things started. Now that I have a method for writing drafts, that struggle goes away.

When speaking outside of all of my classes, being a music producer, this method technically works the same way. Just like writing a bad first draft, starting with some melody and beat ideas for a song is very similar. Also, once I'm close to finishing a song, I will go over it numerous times to revise it, just like I would in a paper. Just thought this would be an interesting and different approach to this prompt.

Logan, just like you, I plan to continue using the writing process to finish out my UNI class strong. I also used to struggle with the start of papers, I wouldn't let myself just let it all out because I hated going back and revising everything. Because of the improved draft process I've learned in this class, I am able to write with less stress and create better papers.

I feel that my rhetorical analysis was the most challenging assignment so far. I think this because it was the project I had to do the most in-depth research for. Having to dissect an author's writing isn't something I've done in this style, so it was definitely a new experience.

I think that my writing has improved marginally. I didn't believe that I was really "great" at writing, but I didn't think I was bad. But over the course so far, I think I have made several changes that make it better. For example, I've been trying to become less vague in my writing, which is something I've struggled with for awhile.

Paul, I also believe that the rhetorical analysis has been the most difficult assignment of this class so far. In addition, The rhetorical analysis taught me how to be less vague in my writing because of how much depth it required, looks like we both benefitted from it.

It is important to evaluate sources because it establishes the credibility of what you are reading. When you are applying what have read to something else such as a paper or a project it is important that what you are using is credible in order to make the project or paper credible. I have learned that it is almost impossible to find something that has no bias at all. When reading an article I will wonder what kind of biases it includes because I am in the environment group I assume most of what I will read will be pro-science. You have to take everything you read on the web with a grain of salt because it is almost certain whoever wrote it has some sort of opinion and bias when they wrote it.

Addie, I definitely agree with you on the idea that almost everything on the internet is biased. It can be very difficult to find a reliable source because of this, so I always am on alert for a biased article. In addition, I pay attention to the date of the article to check if it is relevant or not.

The main argument from my article was that women were the largest demographic that lost jobs due to covid.                                                                - Over 5.4 million women lost jobs                                      

- More than half of that number were women of color

- Most of them are still jobless and struggling to support for their families

I think that the author could have gone more in depth with the women who were still jobless and how they haven’t been able to find a new job since. I would ask for additional examples of something that was a first hand account from a women who was still unemployed. I cannot think of a counterargument because it is backed with stats and it is a terrible thing that happened no matter what you believe.

Adam, similarly, I wish that my author provided more feedback on the main topics lasting issues. In my opinion, this is important because we both have felt left out of needed information to make a proper rhetorical analysis.

The author uses small phrases or words that were used to describe the Black rights protests in the news and media coverage. She integrated the quotes into her own writing to make it flow through the sentence. She introduces who was saying the quote which showed credibility in her writing. The author explained the quote or quotes in one or two sentences just giving the overall summary of the quotes and how they play into her argument. I could definitely use this technique in my own paper, I think it would allow me to explain the effectiveness of her argument better and more clear.

Tierney, Like your author, my author used quotes from people to provide her article with credibility. In addition, my author used her quotes to lead her article in new directions and ideas, which relate to how you authors used quotes to “play into her argument”. I plan on using both of these strategies in the future to strengthen my writing.

I personally think that peer editing can be more helpful than help from your instructor if it is taken seriously. I feel that your peers tend to be more open and honest about what needs to be changed or taken away while an instructor may try to sugar coat it. The most helpful advice that I get is when people tell me if something does or does not make sense. Although it may make sense to me, do you believe that the reader will think it makes sense? I think the least helpful advice is advice on spelling and grammar because the computer does that for you, it is a waste of time on the editors part.

Madeline, I agree with you on the idea that your peers are more straight forward with you and don't sugar coat like an instructor might do. Students usually have more of a connection with each other rather than with their instructor in my opinion. Also, I agree with you that grammar advice is the least helpful, the computer corrects it for you.

When I look back at Project One I am relieved that it is over because it was hard to get started. Once I started writing it all came together. My pre-writing process took a lot of brainstorming. It was hard to decide what to include in my letter and differentiate between what was necessary or not. After I wrote my full letter I had people read over it for me and give me feedback. After receiving feedback, I had to revise a few things and then I felt more confident about submitting it. Having peers read my letter and giving me their opinions was very useful to me to hear others ideas and thoughts about what I wrote. I definitely have things I need to improve on for project two. One thing I need to improve on is making my writing flow better as I am writing instead of always having to go back and fix it at the end.

Mary, like you, I also struggled with the Letter to Younger Self project at the start. I agree that getting peer reviews is also helpful, its like you get a whole different perspective on your essay.

It’s hard for me to recall advice that I have received about writing in the past. Although I have gone through so many English classes I can’t remember receiving that great of advice. I don’t think I ever struggled much with English, therefore I wasn’t handed much advice.

I did have one teacher though, Mrs. Burke, who was my favorite teacher. She more taught me writing tools rather than giving advice, which in itself I guess can serve the same purpose. She created an AP independent study for me and one other classmate to take; the focus of it was rhetorical analysis. I really enjoyed her class and how “one-on-one” it was; it definitely helped me enjoy writing and enjoy doing well in writing.

Daisy, I have to agree with you. I haven't really received all that great advice from previous English classes. But, if I had to choose someone who helped tremendously, it’d be my Junior year English teacher, Mrs. Lachance. Similarly, Mrs. Lachance helped me to enjoy writing more like Mrs. Burke did for you.

I can translate my writing process into other work outside of class by applying my learned draft & revisions skills to other writing projects. For example, I have to write a letter to a future student and give them advice about getting through their first semester for my UNI class. Im planning on making a really bad rough draft or two, then I'm going to revise it or even have a peer review it, which we do a lot of in class.

The assignment that has been the most challenging for me this year was the rhetorical analysis. What I struggled with during the analysis was properly analyzing my authors article. There was very little bias, so it was difficult for me to decide what their argument was and I also had trouble figuring out what rhetorical devices were used. Regarding my writing, I feel that it hasn't improved that much, but I have re-learned little rules and tricks to make my writing more correct and clear.

It is imprint to evaluate a source because often times it can be unreliable and misleading, which leaves you with false information to a specific topic that could be important to you. The most important thing I was reminded of from HTWA’s chapter was to always remember to check the date of the source. This knowledge can change the way you think about an article by having you look at its relevance. It also changes the way I look for information on the web by reminding me to check the date before clicking on the article link.

The main argument of my article was inform people about what China's lunar-sample return missions are and how many people and organizations around the world are trying to prevent and solve the contamination of the lunar-return samples.

- Importance of the ice

- Let scientist get samples they need before the missions starts.

- Drill the ice past its contaminated layer to get clean samples.

The evidence that could be explored further is the importance of the ice, the author never talks about what would happen if we didn't get the ice samples. In addition, a counter argument for this article could be proving why scientist should not get the ice samples.

I found this while looking through images of ads for all different kinds of phones. The audience is a consumer looking to upgrade their phone. The purpose of the image is to give the consumer a reason to buy this phone over another. The post uses pathos to appeal by making the consumer believe that this new technology will make their life easier. This image does fit the principals of CRAP. It shows how companies try and appeal towards their consumers.

Hey Paul, I really like the ad you chose. Apple is usually very clever with their advertisement and I think this is one of those examples. I also agree with what you said about this appealing to the audience through pathos. I feel like every new phone ad always wants to make people think it will make their life easier.

Paul, I definitely agree with you when you say that the audience is people looking to upgrade their phones. This is true because the author used pathos by saying things like, “state-of-the-art technology”, “your finger is the password”, and “simple touch”, which causes people who read it to feel the need to make their life simpler and more efficient.

I found this image of an ad for coke on google. The audience of this image is definitely Cocacola/James Bond fans. The images purpose is to get people to purchase coke, along with referencing a new movie. It is obvious that the author uses ethos as a rhetorical device to persuade the audience, I know this because they use James Bond, a celebrity, as credability for their ad. The ad also does follow CRAP nicely.

Prompt 7

In my article “Will Increasing to the Moon contaminate its precious ice”, the author, Alexandra Witze, uses a quote at the very end of the article to end her conclusion. Witze quotes Pavarthy Prem, a planetary scientist, where he says “One thing we need to do is to make sure we are far-sighted,” says Prem. “Who knows what sort of science people generations in the future might want to do?”. It seems that she quotes Prem to support the rhetorical device of ethos. This quote is successful in the sense of leaving the reader to make their own decision on the topic, but is highly unsuccessful in persuading the reader to chose a certain side.

Prompt 6

 The type of suggestions that were most helpful to me in the revision process was definitely having better transitions between my paragraphs. Often times, I just start writing and have no smooth flow throughout the paper so it can be choppy sometimes. The suggestions that were least helpful was probably my grammar mistakes, which I always go back in and fix before I make my final draft. In regards to the peer review process, something I would change is going through the paper side by side with the peer so they can elaborate on your mistakes.

In the article I read the author used logos by making scientific statements and facts to show the audience that she was not only passionate about the ocean and the resources it can provide but there was science and proof to back up her argument. She also used pathos by listing all the way humans have caused damage and pollution to the ocean to make the audience feel guilty and angry so that they have more reason to care about the use of sustainable resources and curving climate change. The author could have been more successful if she wouldn’t have gone into so much detail about all the harm that has been done to the ocean because that made the audience wonder if the ocean is even in any shape to be used to create sustainable resources.

Hey Addie, when you referenced how your author used pathos by listing all the ways humans have caused damage to the ocean, it made me realize that our authors did the same thing. In my article, my author also used pathos by describing how humans would ruin the moons water samples by increasing space traffic.
