Fletcher sleeps like a fucking log.” She knew it though, despite how much she tried to make it look like she didn’t. — Her fire took over her exhaustion, but she still felt it in her bones. Forever twenty years old. There couldn’t have been anything more tiring than that. “Disappeared, I can deal with. So, keep your phone on you, It’ll probably only be a few hours before you get a call.” Features brightened with the grin that etched across her face – lasting all but a moment before it fell. “You don’t need to do anything for Sawyer.”

         “I traumatized one of my late wives, I’ll have you know.” It wasn’t a story he told often. One he had shared with his family on one or two occasions at best. The reminder of it had him turning a bit pale in the cheeks, but Jude shook his head to wipe it away. “Chris is meant to think we’re all reckless. Press him enough and he’ll say I am, too. The Swans --- I haven’t heard from them in a while. Well, not unless you count the occasional call down to the bar. I expect enough calls from you to make my battery die, Cass.” When he expression fell he narrowed his eyes. There were too many wrong things to say to the youngest Talbot. Jude had never learned the right combination to keep the smile on her face, not after a thousand years. It was one hell of a smile, too -- bright enough to scrub away inky darkness. “I’m not doing it for Sawyer. I’m doing it for you.” Because of his importance to her, and no other reason.

Surprised I haven’t ended up in here yet,” she nodded behind them at the station as they began to walk. “Well, we said we’d get dinner and I hate a late lunch so I wasn’t hungry until now anyway. What’re you in the mood for?” She picked up some leaves on the path in front of them, “and don’t say pizza. We’ve had that how many times this week?”

         “The Terror of Red Creek. Children flee in fear of their monstrous teacher. Legend has it that the kids who stay back for detention with Miss Talbot never come back.” He paused for dramatic effect. “How about Chinese? I don’t think I could possibly imagine a pizza without oozing grease by this point.” His eyes were on her hands, ever curious what she planned to do with the drying leaves, “What did you do with your day?”

Clarice didn’t care to hear a history lesson but she nodded her head anyway.  A part of her really was fascinated by what he had to say.  A very very small part.  “It’s it weird how all that worked out?  Vampires and werewolves because of witches?”  She said thoughtfully, “could you imagine if none of that happened?  We could have both been normal blood bags but here we are.”  The red head added with a laugh, “right.  Old as rocks.  I’ll keep that in mind.”

         “I would have only lost one wife instead of five.” There was a joke in his voice, despite how painfully true it was. Five times over a thousand plus years wasn’t much but it was enough to make him shy to try again. Always ending prematurely for one reason or another. If anyone wanted to try and track him through history they’d be liable to believe he was a serial killer. Fortunately he wasn’t quite so cruel, despite the few times he had lashed out. “I was fresh married when we were cursed. If Christopher had only ended things with the witch...” But everyone knew the story by now. He wasn’t bitter --- it was something of the past, quite literally.

         “I’m not offended by it. Why else do you think we have hunters here?” Twisted to think that, but it was true. If each of the supernatural creatures could get a cap on their hunting habits then maybe the hunters would piss off. “Trying to get the animal population down. Wolves, bears, couple of wild cats.”

         “The veil is weak.” His explanation had a bit of weight to his voice, and as simple as it was it was really all he could offer. A thousand years was not enough for him to understand the magic around such things, and Jude was tentative to even try considering the weight of his own curse. “You’re lucky to have missed the events, but welcome back regardless.”

If someone breaks in and claims they’ve not stolen anything from the house, then you’ve failed to realize the opposite possibility of them leaving something behind. Nobody breaks in to pet a dog at three in the morning, that’s just completely inefficient.”

         “Kids with mental disabilities do. The wife heard him jimmying the door. Didn’t have a chance to take anything between his entry and petting the dog. Supposedly she was watching him from the upper balcony, overlooking the living room. Kids are fucking weird. Certainly not an efficient b&e at all.”
