The Complex Geometry of Islamic Design
In Islamic culture, geometry is everywhere. You can find it in mosques, madrasas, palaces and private homes. This tradition began in the 8th century CE during the early history of Islam, when craftsmen took preexisting motifs from Roman and Persian cultures and developed them into new forms of visual expression.Â
This period of history was a golden age of Islamic culture, during which many achievements of previous civilizations were preserved and further developed, resulting in fundamental advancements in scientific study and mathematics. Accompanying this was an increasingly sophisticated use of abstraction and complex geometry in Islamic art, from intricate floral motifs adorning carpets and textiles, to patterns of tile work that seemed to repeat infinitely, inspiring wonder and contemplation of eternal order.
Despite the remarkable complexity of these designs, they can be created with just a compass to draw circles and a ruler to make lines within them, and from these simple tools emerges a kaleidoscopic multiplicity of patterns. So how does that work? Well, everything starts with a circle. The first major decision is how will you divide it up? Most patterns split the circle into four, five or six equal sections. And each division gives rise to distinctive patterns.Â
Thereâs an easy way to determine whether any pattern is based on fourfold, fivefold, or sixfold symmetry. Most contain stars surrounded by petal shapes. Counting the number of rays on a starburst, or the number of petals around it, tells us what category the pattern falls into. A star with six rays, or surrounded by six petals, belongs in the sixfold category. One with eight petals is part of the fourfold category, and so on.Â
Thereâs another secret ingredient in these designs: an underlying grid. Invisible, but essential to every pattern, the grid helps determine the scale of the composition before work begins, keeps the pattern accurate, and facilitates the invention of incredible new patterns. Letâs look at an example of how these elements come together.Â
Weâll start with a circle within a square, and divide it into eight equal parts. We can then draw a pair of criss-crossing lines and overlay them with another two. These lines are called construction lines, and by choosing a set of their segments, weâll form the basis of our repeating pattern.Â
Many different designs are possible from the same construction lines just by picking different segments. And the full pattern finally emerges when we create a grid with many repetitions of this one tile in a process called tessellation.
By choosing a different set of construction lines, we might have created this any of the above patterns. The possibilities are virtually endless. Â
We can follow the same steps to create sixfold patterns by drawing construction lines over a circle divided into six parts, and then tessellating it, we can make something like the above.
Hereâs another sixfold pattern that has appeared across the centuries and all over the Islamic world, including Marrakesh, Agra, Konya and the Alhambra.Â
Fourfold patterns fit in a square grid, and sixfold patterns in a hexagonal grid.Â
Fivefold patterns, however, are more challenging to tessellate because pentagons donât neatly fill a surface, so instead of just creating a pattern in a pentagon, other shapes have to be added to make something that is repeatable, resulting in patterns that may seem confoundingly complex, but are still relatively simple to create.Â
This more than 1,000-year-old tradition has wielded basic geometry to produce works that are intricate, decorative and pleasing to the eye. And these craftsmen prove just how much is possible with some artistic intuition, creativity, dedication along with a great compass and ruler.

I got the opportunity to go to the Alhambra in Spain once and itâs absolutely packed full of these kinds of geometric details. One of the coolest places on earth, kinda want to go back.
Dunno how well you can see from my blurry-ass photo but the way those arches are carved is basically the same artistic philosophy applied to 3D shapes and the effect is astonishing.
Thatâs because it was built in 1238 by Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar!!! Itâs on top of Sierra Nevada, in Granada, and it was part of Al-Andalus (nowadays AndalucĂa)!!
La Alhambra was build at the end of the Nasrid Dynasty, when the Christian monarchs of Castilla were pushing them out of the peninsula after over EIGHT CENTURIES of conquest of the south of the Iberic Peninsula. In fact, Granada was the last point before el rey nazarĂ gave into the Reyes CatĂłlicos.
This is why the south of Spain is very much regarded as the true paradise - our climate, architecture, accent, hospitality and diversity is what makes the south so beloved and yet so hated. Oftentimes people see us as the laziest of Spain, when itâs all, of course, racist stereotypes.
AndalucĂa is diverse and the bed of culture of most of what everyone loves about Spain. Our national dance, flamenco, comes from the Roma. Our most wonderful buildings from times of the Caliphate. Our accents a mix of Moroccan, Roma, Muslim, Castellano, IbĂŠrico⌠Itâs thick! Itâs lovely!
And itâs lovely BECAUSE we embrace our mix of cultures :) hereâs some more examples of this!
they should invent water for men
Good news OP
While this is a funny joke, as far as I'm aware this company is actually pretty cool, and the purpose behind the Liquid Death (sparkling or still) water is quite wholesome.
Part of the reason for it being a tallboy is that aluminum cans are more recyclable than water bottles, potentially infinitely so, while water bottles either have a limited amount of recyclability potential or aren't actually recyclable at all.
The other reason is to literally make it more fun and appealing to drink something other than alcohol at concert venues. Part of getting over addiction or even getting away from a culture that is doing you harm is, in the US at least, heavily associated with becoming "no fun". The idea here is to make water as fun in terms of packaging as alcohol, so people who are going sober, who can't drink, or who are the Designated Driver don't have to feel like they're relegated to the "no fun zone" forever and still get to order something with a silly name. We had these at my brother's wedding as an alcohol alternative and tbh it was really neat.
From the Liquid Death website:
"Most products in the health and wellness space are all marketed with âaspirationalâ fitness models and airbrushed celebrities. And many of us are tired of it. Why should unhealthy products be the only brands with âpermissionâ to be loud, fun, and weird? And let's be honest, almost all marketing and branding is just theater. So weâre going to treat our theater like a movie theater and have more fun with it."
So yeah! If you want a neat alternative to buying bottled water, this isn't a bad alternative. Also, if you feel like you miss the feeling of opening a can of beer and drinking one, especially with carbonation, this could help curb the urge without having to substitute soda.
Oh. So it was a stand against single use plastic, alcoholism culture, and eating disorders disguised as fitness.

god remember how fjord did a fake accent for 76 episodes because he was trying to mimic someone who represented everything he wanted to be? and only gave the accent up after deciding that it was better to be powerless than to have someone try to control you through your power? fucking insane i miss him SO much
EAT THE RICH
Wtf
The Rich Moms in Bridge Club were always complaining they couldnât keep âstaffâ. They asked my mother why turnover at her work and our house was low. She said: âSimple. I pay more than the going rate. I remember birthdays. They get a Christmas bonus, and as much great coffee as they damn well please. Also lunch.â
â-Iâm not doing that.â
âThen have fun dusting.â
My mom stole a nanny for me from a daycare because I loved her so much. She marched up to her and asked to speak to her alone. She asked what she was being paid. Offered to double her pay, plus pay for health insurance, weekends off, room and board, plus holidays and bonuses, plus mom would take her to see her family in Jaurez on the weekends so she wouldnât need to take the bus.
She looked at mom then me and then asked timidly âCould I get that in writing?â
Now there was another woman in the car with mom and mom knocked on the window. The lady was a notary. Mom had had her and Dadâs lawyer draw up a contract and had sent her with a notary. Contract was in English and Spanish and exactly as mom had promised her and there were four copies. They both signed, dad already had, and the Chris turned on her heel and marched back into the building. Mom followed because she loves drama. Chris marched up to her boss, told her she quit, hugged all the kids, then practically sprinted to momâs car. Mom apparently shrugged to the boss âI wanted a Nanny and Lauren loves her.â
Anyway Chris first week at the house started cleaning and Dad kept trying to get her to stop, because that wasnât what they were paying her for. She told him that I toddler after her trying to help her dust. I was an easy baby so she found stuff to do. Between her and mom dad was the best fed man on the block. Dad took her and mom shopping and years later Chris told me the part that made her the most nervous was him because dad was a big man and she was 22 years old. Dad installed a lock on her door that was not just a push lock for her and mom told her, in front of dad, that if he was ever inappropriate with her, it would be him out on his ass not her. He never was though. She stayed with us for 7 years, until she got married actually. The man she married apparently went to meet her parents and they told him that they liked him but sheâd already broken up with three men who didnât pass muster with my parents and me.
Anyway, itâs amazing what treating people like people can do.
anytime someone talks about âdouble textingâ im just like. sorry. cant relate. every single person i actually text will receive 14 texts in a row at 11pm about whatever random thing im thinking about
I always get confused when people apologize for texting. Like, dude, my phone volume hasnât been on since I bought this phone and it is face down at night, you could text me at any time as much as you want and Iâll respond whenever I notice them without any though of the time or volume of responses I send back. Relax and reach out freely, babies
