12.07 / This is my final project- I did the stencil of Chinese New Year picture “Menshen” and I taught my classmates about the Chinese New Year Pictures. Everybody got my print.

Last day at the printmaking studio. :( 

I cleaned the paper mill, but at least I got to stay nice and clean tidying it up. I really didn’t want to touch ink again after last week!

The last part of my SEA project. So I made cookies right after making the recipe cards and taking my first shower of that week. :D My arms were more sore and I ended up sleeping on the couch for an hour, though.

All that lead to me trying to give out the stuff at the Art and Design Building and people...not wanting them. Not even the free goodie bags! A lot of them were in a rush, which was understandable, but even as I approached people just sitting down they turned it down. Only a few people accepted it, and most of them were friends, acquaintances, or friends of friends. A lot of the people that accepted thought the recipe card was cute while others thought “oh, free stuff, don’t mind if I do.” I guess I know how it feels to be one of those people on campus trying to give out free stuff.  At least I had enough left to give to the class and to more friends.

@printmaking-homie - Thanks for helping, man! It was slightly better when we tried going to the Johnson Center and Southside.

Finished printing recipe cards! 

There were a couple hiccups along the way. There was one moment where the screen moved even though it was tightly clamped to the printmaking board. The first 10 or so prints had the dashed line cut off and the word “smooth” didn’t come out that well as I printed (as seen in the fourth pic), although that fixed with time, as well as printing over the card 10 times due to how transparent the green ink was.

Now I just gotta make cookies and prepare the goodie bags with the recipe cards. My arms really hurt though!

From Tuesday’s class, still worked on my SEA project. I forgot to cut the papers I cut in half again to get the right card size! I also mixed ink to use for my cards, which also took time.

I spent time after class to print the red onto the cards, and they turned out nicely! Too bad the green didn’t come out the same way. I had to do another exposure and wait to do it again since it was late at night, but thankfully Ting offered her screen to me!

Worked on gathering supplies and setting up most of this weekend for the SEA project!

Not pictured are the failed attempts of me printing the transparencies properly. Printing transparencies took a bulk of my weekend. I spent a lot of time waiting for them to dry, only to find they got smeared hours later. Thankfully, a desperate Google search mentioned printing on the rough side of the transparency, so the ink transferred smoothly and was instantly dried. I also made the transparencies this way rather than with the 4-color separation process since I’m only using two colors: red and green. 

I was too tired to start with putting on the registration tabs and making my ink due to other assignments due Monday and Tuesday, so I’ll definitely be working on that in class!

From Thursday’s class, almost everyone worked on their SEA or at least on their idea for it. 

I decided to do a recipe card for chocolate chip cookies and attach them to a goodie bag with chocolate chip cookies and some candy, which I’d give out to students outside the Art and Design Building before critique day to promote well-being. Finals are coming up and it’s the last week of classes, so I figured it would be nice to try and do for some lucky students!

Oh, and Andre and I attempted to make paper with the pulp we had. It came out so thin...but at least we tried!

And in case some people forgot, there’s a sign-up sheet for clean-up at the printmaking studio. We all gotta do it.

From Tuesday’s class, where we made cyanotypes of the pics we made for the copper etching project. I think the cyanotype came out better than the copper etching. :D

Not the most flattering pictures, but here are a couple pics from critiques on our copper etching before Thanksgiving break. I was incredibly tired during class, but I at least got to show off this cool print of the Chipmunk Punk album. Everyone else’s looked pretty great!

From last class on Thursday, last day of copper etching!

I went from getting my paper together to making all my prints all in one night. The chipmunk on the left, Simon, wasn’t showing very well at first. I later tried running the print into the press several times to get more ink to printed on it. He still looked a little ghostly, but a lot less faded than previous prints!

Despite midterms being over for me, I’m still being a goof in class. For some reason I’m still reacting really slow and I even lost my phone half-way through class. But I’m catching up at least! I got to dip my copper plate in acid and beveled the edges.

Andre and I also started a little too late on making paper. At least Patrick and Jordan helped. :D

Oh, and Andre found my phone. Things turned out well after all.

From last Thursday’s class! Andre and I were lagging behind, maybe being too goofy that day. 

There were definitely issues with the emulsion staying on the screens, since mine dried overnight and some still managed to come off, and we used another screen that had the same problem. But at least we found a way to get our plates ready. We also cut up some fabric for making paper.

From 11/7: Copper Etching continues. Oh, and prepping some fabric to be made into paper.

For the vintage music theme, I looked into Alvin and the Chipmunks. I grew up with their Christmas songs and their 90′s TV show, but I didn’t know that there was an 80′s album called Chipmunk Punk. Interestingly, the son of the father that created the Chipmunks took over as voices for the chipmunks in the album. So I decided to make a simple picture off the album for my print.

Also, we got to see Erwin demonstrate the process where the copper plates go into acid overnight. Seems like a pretty lengthy process!

From 11/2: Everyone was either working on their Risographs, cleaning screens, putting their picture together, or starting the copper etching process. 

I worked on my Risograph, but each print came out odd. Some colors didn’t blend very well together, and even the yellow came out with a LOT of yellow ink. This probably had a lot to do with me not tweaking the contrast to the picture, an issue I didn’t fix in the 4-color separation project. It was interesting, though, to see how different the Risograph is from our screen prints.

From 10/31: Picking a new theme for the next project and a brief overview on copper etching.

We all picked “vintage music” for a theme. I was really surprised Spam didn’t make the cut! Erwin also shows some nice prints he made from copper etching as he goes over how the process works.
