“a promise we’ll all surely break one day,” lis chuckled, she was already a bit boring as is so she gave it about five years before she was just as lame as the rest. “blending in does sound like something i would like, as does maybe letting loose for once… but don’t tell my siblings, i don’t want them thinking it’s a ‘new me’ or something of the like.” her nose wrinkled as he mentioned the taxi would be dirty, it wasn’t something she’d actively seek but perhaps it’d lend to the experience as a whole. “thank you, how are we going to get in? will i need identification? goodness you can tell i’ve never done this before.”

“come on now, that’s not the attitude to face coming into old age! don’t worry, i’ll be there to keep you young.” he promised. “your secret is safe with me. one night of letting loose is more than enough. just something to take the edge off,” he grinned, glad she was doing this. he knew more than a few high strung people and he thought everyone should have a chance to just party their troubles away at least once or twice. “they know me. and truly, if you have money, you can get in anywhere.”

Hercules nodded, noted he was one of those royals. The one who didn’t want their title but went on their way anyway. He couldn’t relate but didn’t royals have like 500 kids incase one died or something? Or could Jules did what the monarch did forever ago and give up the crown for love? Maybe not. “Illegal usually means strippers, or prostitutes. Like my under grad days? Those were some parties although I can only see them through a video. I don’t remember much.”

“Oh -- god no. i don’t get that wild, though the tabloids might be saying something different. i thought illegal may include y’know. fun substances. but legal parties are fun too. damn, almost makes me wish i went to actual university instead of doing my courses from home.”

“oh, so you do this often? perhaps i will have to notify security,” she laughed, a teasing grin on her face. siyeon wouldn’t have been surprised if the prince made nightly excursions, what with his nonchalant demeanor even as he left the premises. “interesting,” she hummed. clubs weren’t really her scene; they were far too noisy and tawdry, from her own experience. but if it was a club fit for a prince, she supposed it couldn’t be so bad. “if you don’t mind, your highness, then i’ll join you.”

“hey, i never said that,” though the beam on his face betrayed his words. “and please -- with all the guards breathing down my neck now that whitehall’s here, i have it hard enough,” he gave a small pout, taking a dramatic sigh. “i’d love to have a partner in crime. please do. and god, no more ‘your highness’. just jules will do.”

things were changing up --- and quickly at that. while they were mere acquaintances arranged to be married for the sake of the survival of their respective countries, things didn’t seem to be such a chore anymore. what he had imagined would be a stiff, lackluster life of helping run a country he had no ties to, was evolving to be much more. his lips on hers meant a deal more than it looked. it was the promise of a life he’d bore a cross on the moment he heard of the arrangement. maybe things wouldn’t be so bad. maybe they could be friends, and work in an environment that would benefit not only their countries, but them as well. the silk under his fingers felt like a dream. none of this could be real --- he’d of course kissed lots of ladies in the past, even went steady with a few girls, but none made his heart pound like this. he could feel the power of what they could be. together, they were a force to be reckoned with and he knew she felt it too. reluctantly, he pulled away from the kiss, catching his breath with a small chuckle, resting his forehead against hers. “we’re being crazy,” he spoke with a grin. though his words would sound like a reproach in any other’s mouth, his was almost a joke. the amount of times he’d heard people call him crazy and irresponsible, he knew what he was doing was just that. “i guess you’re not that bad, on second thought,” he teased, trying to forget the slight blush he knew had crept onto his cheeks during the kiss. though his plan was to leave, he wasn’t so sure he wanted to do that anymore. knowing that lucrezia had kissed him back was insanely rewarding. that a girl like her could get along with a guy like him -- all the odds were against them but somehow they managed to find a balance, and he was no longer scared of the future, something he hadn’t been able to say in a long, long time. “so...”

“you say brave, most would say insane or stupid.” she relaxed in her seat. “will they extend the courtesy to me as well?” laena figured they would, but there was no harm in asking. “i suppose you’ll teach me how to dance?” she grinned and took jules’s hand before stepping out of the taxi. “are you sure you’re not taking me back here to murder me?” she faked a quick pout.

“don’t they mean the same thing?” he laughed at his wisdom, looking over to the blonde. “of course. you’re my guest for the evening, and i want to show you the best shanghai has to offer,” he nodded confidently. he was treated like a king here -- but not for his title. mostly for his money, which he liked far better. “that’s a promise,” he grinned, a familiar twinkle of mischief glinting in his eye. “now -- i had to resist the temptation. i’d rather have my evening companion well and alive, thank you very much.” he laughed, pulling her along to the door where he knocked. in a matter of minutes they were being taken to the vip section, seated with the finest wine being poured in their glasses, with a view of the restaurant below them on one side.

“He’s not a tree, he’s a building.” she said with a wrinkle of her nose and a small frown after Jules described his former bodyguard. “Alright, he sounds very scary so I can’t really think of someone like him actually having fun.” she shrugged. She didn’t doubt Jules had really tried to befriend the man or buy him for the matter, it wasn’t actually very surprising. “Blade? Darling I’d use a saw.” she joked, laughing right after. 

“good observation. well, whatever object he was, he was a damn buzzkill,” he laughed at his words, giving a small dramatic shudder as he thought back to his versailles bodyguard. “oh -- you are a morbid one, barbie. how have i not noticed before?” he laughed, shaking his head. “but, if it’s between me and you. i do think your cousin is quite the lady.”

“sure, whatever makes you sleep at night,” she chuckled and had the last drag off her cigarette. “do you happen to have any ashtray around here? otherwise, i’ll toss it in these curls of yours,” juliet said with an innocent smile on her face. of course she wouldn’t do it but jules knew that she was capable of anything. that was the thing about her, she was unpredictable and she always had crazy, reckless ideas. “don’t you even dare to do that unless you want me to kill you. watch out, jules. i’m serious. and yes, you need to thank me for everything because i’mthat amazing. i don’t know which one of us is the most arrogant, though. i think it depends.” she really missed hanging out with him and causing trouble together. he was the one that kept her sane most of the time and they were pretty much alike. she had a rough time in versailles when she was little, people judged her mother’s morals all the time and they were reluctant to accept her even though she was legitimised. the only one who dared to stand up for her was jules and that was the moment when juliet stopped being a crybaby and turned into a stone-cold bitch. her weakest point had always been her mother. “speaking of that, we’re going shopping tomorrow. i want new dresses and i need your opinion.” they did almost everything together and they both helped the other to pick their attire. “you little prick, how dare you?” she said with a laugh and shook her head. “darling, don’t forget that i’m here for spying reasons as well. besides, i know you too well. your face betrayed you,” she shrugged. “well, at least you’re making progress. how was it?” juliet winked. “i’m glad she’s nice. otherwise, i would’ve killed her.”

“heads up,” he said after looking around the room, finding a little marble ashtray in the drawer. he threw it on the couch next to her. “you do that and you wouldn’t be alive to see the light of tomorrow,” he laughed as he sat back down beside her. it was just the way they worked -- playful empty threats. “kill me? i’d like to see you try and survive one day on this earth with your favorite person ever,” he scoffed at that, puffing out his chest proudly. “definitely depends on the day and the situation. though i’ve got to say, for the arrogance contest, you’re winning today,” he teased, chuckling as he put an arm around her shoulder. it was a long time since they got to just be one on one and act like they always had. they had always meant to be friends, from the moment he first stood up for her when they were kids in versailles. that was all it took for them to become attached to the hip. and if the occasion ever came up, he would do the same exact thing today. there had never been a time where jules questioned juliet, and he was always very quick to defend her to whoever was speaking ill of her. “what do i look like to you, a lady in waiting?” he joked, though he was excited at the prospect of getting out of the hotel once more, this time in daylight. it would feel good to just be out and about and spend large sums of money with his best friend. “can’t let anything past you, can i?” he laughed, shaking his head as he looked away. “it was great, really. i know it sounds cheesy, but i feel like we’ve got a real connection, which i definitely wasn’t expecting. i’m scared things get messy, though, if we get our feelings involved. after all this was purely for political reasons. ah --- no need to do that. she’s a sweetheart. you might even want to take lessons from her,” he teased with a wink.

cesare had merely stepped out of his room to grab a bite to eat but there jules stood, trying to talk his way out of the situation. “i was going to get food but now i’m just offended that you didn’t invite me on your little bar crawl my friend, surely you heard i was going to be here.” he was barely dressed fr a night out himself, only donning a pair of sweatpants and a tee shirt but now he knew his friend was going out he knew he’d be going to. “you say that as if i’m going to come running back here screaming that i left. give me two minutes to change.” it only took him that amount of time to run back to his room and change, barely styling his hair but what was the difference anyway. “tell me you have a getaway car, i’m not doing the walk of shame after being caught.”

“cesare, you know i have to worry about what your sister might say if she found out if you followed me out around town,” jules grinned, completely shrugging off the words he’d just said, happy to see the younger boy around. though the slight age difference, they’d always gotten along well, and he was glad to have him as a partner in crime tonight. “okay -- you have a good point. hurry up then, getting caught wouldn’t be too fun,” he shooed the other boy away. once he came back, jules started walking for the back door. “a classic beat up shanghai cab -- very inconspicuous. let’s go before one of those ogres find us.”

“it’s far too late for a gathering of the royals though surely, most monarchs prefer to be in bed at this time, beauty sleep is important when you’re running a country apparently.” lis giggled at his gesture, she could imagine the uproar now if he even tried to normalise his outfit. “i’m not much for parties or clubs, i like watching the stars, they can’t judge you or take pictures of your inebriated state.” she followed after him diligently, taking a moment to thank the heavens she didn’t wear her pyjamas to sneak out and instead a mini skirt with one of anthony’s tee’s tucked into it. “never actually, what’s so fun about them?”

“of course, because they’re all old and lame. i swear i’ll never end up like that,” he spoke solemnly before cracking a smile, even though in his mind he knew that was exactly his fate, and probably elisabet’s too. “ah, that may be true, but that also means the stars are so safe. clubs are risky -- and it’s such a thrill to blend into the crowd for once in your life. i bet you’ll love it,” he spoke. though of course he had no idea if she would, but he would definitely enjoy himself, especially with unusual company. “they’re so much more dirty and REAL than those stupid jacked up cars we get hauled around in usually,” he grinned, opening the door in the taxi for her, motioning for her. “ladies first.”

“feels like a disease,” rhea whispered under her breath. it seemed the very moment one person realised they were being lied to, they’d too adopt a mask meant to hide the truth. with them carrying the future of countries on their shoulders she could impossibly blame them and her voice showed no sign of her doing so as she spoke, but it was intimidating, wasn’t it? like the lies could shatter at any given moment and they’d all be walking on shards soon enough. “but it’s always good to see not everyone has joined the masquerade yet.” she offered a smile, blissfully ignoring how she was speaking to a prince about the people who had to play a rather important part in his life; no matter if as alliance or enemy. “will you too tell me an arranged marriage is the worst possible scenario for you?” she asked, a light giggle escaping her lips now as she slowly shook her head. her eyes fell back onto her empty journal page and the smile turned into a soft frown. “it does sound as easy as blinking, doesn’t it? i suppose, that’s the tragedy of it: it should be easy to accomplish, but it’s just not.” rhea paused for a moment to think, meanwhile scribbling a small triangle into the corner of her book page. “i can’t just disappear for a day or two, especially not now. i’ve siblings here who’re in need of–” her gaze wandered back outside, eyebrows furrowing even more at the dull looking sky. “–a little bit of sunshine.”

“you’re much too right,” he answered, a frown on his face. if there was one prevalent reason he tried to stay as far away from home as possible was all the lies and the fake smiles that veiled the politics of their countries. he rather be true and genuine -- he’d never done well with lying, unless that was to get out of trouble, that is. “i’ve fled the masquerade nearly my whole adult life, and now i’m stuck watching it,” he sighed in response to the girl, a small defeated smile on his lips. he liked her honesty --- of course, she may not be speaking that way had she known she was speaking of his very family, but that’s exactly what he wanted to hear. the TRUTH, for once. he craved it, craved genuine conversations like this one. “it once was -- though, when the worst possible scenario became the only scenario for me, i’ve tried to accept it as best i can. at least i actually enjoy my partner’s company, so it could be worse,” he shrugged. it was the first time he was talking about the arranged marriage. the betrothal was still secret, but she didn’t seem to know who he was, and it felt good to unload the secret on someone with an objective perspective. “that’s interesting, why is that?” he asked, finally taking a seat beside her. he took a liking to this girl -- he saw some of his own favorite traits in her, and in her eyes, he could see the same kind of trapped bird fluttering around his own mind. “yes, but sometimes you need to be a little selfish, don’t you? take a day for yourself. if they do miss you, tell you were doing some important business. i’ll take the blame for you. we’re doing this fort, whether i need to kidnap you or not.”

“Tree of a person.” Barbie repeated, laughing a bit at how he described his bodyguard. “You could befriend him. I go out with my bodyguard but unfortunately she’s not here.” Barbie shrugged. She indeed wishes her bodyguard was there, she liked having the woman around. “As always.” she teased him with the typical cocky smile on her face. “The luxembourgish princess, she’s a friend of mine. Jules, mio caro, you know I like you a lot but Luce is my baby cousin so if you do anything wrong to her I’ll cut your dick off. And you know damn well I’m not kidding.” the smile was still on her face but so was her threatening voice tone.

“six foot four and as wide as he is tall, i have no other way to describe him,” he laughed along with barbie, shaking his head. “better luck trying to befriend a rock, i’m afraid. and i’ve already tried to buy him out -- no such luck, though.” he was indeed a little jealous that barbie had a cool bodyguard. “now now, no need to take out the big guns, lovely barbie. no one is going near my nether regions with a sharp blade. besides. we’re not officially betrothed yet, as far as anyone knows, but i get the picture. you won’t have to worry though, i was only kidding.” he laughed at the girl’s threat, shaking his head with a boyish grin.

“i’d love to tell them. i’d also love to yell at them if they claimed otherwise.” she smiled and crossed her legs at the knee. “same. it’s nice and refreshing. you’re a vip there? so fancy. and i’ll warn you now, but i am not a very good dancer.”

“ah, you’re quite brave, then. not many people would stand up to france’s most important monarchs. well, i do give them quite generous amounts of money -- they amp up the security when i come as well. and, most importantly, they keep my identity secret. that’s alright, you can always learn,” he grinned as the taxi made its way downtown and turned into a back alley. “we’ll use the back door just to be safe.” he got out, reaching a hand out to help her out, feeling giddy, like he did everytime he snuck out. it was definitely more fun when someone came along.

it was nearly impossible how the night took a turn --- how could two people who were virtually strangers feel such a spark? he was sure he’d never felt this way before, not when just meeting a person, anyways. though the sensible thing was to pull away and leave, jules felt he knew the petite girl -- and besides, it was better to feel this way with his betrothed than any other. he gave a small smile as she spoke, nodding. ‘we’re in this together.’ the words resonated in his head --- four little words that would usually make him run for the hills didn’t phase him. he had accepted his fate before even coming to see her in her room. he hadn’t even realized it himself until this moment. her skin was soft under his rugged thumbs. for a rich boy, he’d worked hard enough abroad that soft pampered hands had turned calloused and tan. just watching her blush under his gaze was one of the most endearing things he could remember seeing. having her so close, breathing in her scent, it was hard to make out what exactly he was feeling. thoughts were rushing through his head, though he ignored them all. nothing else mattered except each other. he had always been good at ignoring doing the right thing, and now, he wasn’t sure if what he was doing was good or bad. all he knew is that he wanted her close. he could tell she hadn’t let anyone in for a long time, and for some reason the first thing he felt for her was the desire to protect her --- help her. once his lips met hers, his heart started beating wildly. he had just crossed a threshold. she could either push him away and call him a creep, or she would reciprocate, showing him that what he was feeling wasn’t totally one sided. he felt her hands rest on his chest, and his hands cupping her face slowly made their way down to her waist. gently, he pulled her in closer -- he needed her, at this moment in time. and jules theodore d’orleans never needed anyone.
