I decided to try to make Tarin in Blockbench because I have free will. This model forced me to actually think how Tarin's armor actually worked. That was interesting to look into. I'm going to do a more thorough redesign of it in the future probably. (That's another item to the long list of "world building problems to fix.")

Tarin in the Undertale style

Let me show you what I've been working on. This is not the full picture, it has been cropped.

5 years ago before now, after I received the draft notice. I was in Yelon’s bar, I was telling my brother the news. He served me what I ordered, he was reluctant to hand me alcohol but did so regardless. Yelon listened to me intently as I rambled about my loosened feelings. Then Mace walked in and sat next to me. The expression on his face told me that mother must have told him. Yelon gave him a whiskey. They both share the same taste in drinks in the same way to their looks. That’s where their similarities as twins end. Mace didn’t say anything as he slid a small handmade wooden bird to me. I inspected it quietly, and on the bottom there was an engraving. It was my chosen name, Tarin. I traced the carving of each letter gently with my unclipped claws. It felt like something Papa would have done. ...My notice couldn’t have come at a worst time for the family. Mace went through a heavy depressive episode, so did Mother. He was the closest with Papa after all. Me and Yelon had to handle organizing most of the funeral, with Mother’s input. I came home from my part time job to Colten speaking with Mace. I made my way to my bedroom quietly as to not distrub them. I listened quietly from my bedroom, one ear to the door. “…Your father was a good man.” Colten spoke in his ordinary tone. He and Father were close as well, they would do everything together just like brothers. “He helped me through some of my darkest times.” I heard Mace sigh. “You don’t need to console me like a child.” There was a darkness to Mace’s voice I had never heard before. His voice was empty, the life of it left with father. “I’m aware of this.” I hear Colten click his tongue softly, signifying he’s thinking hard. “Your father was worried about becoming a parent. He didn’t want to repeat the actions his father did to him.” “I know that.” Mace interrupts with a dagger for a tongue. “Listen,” Colten commands firmly with a soft edge. “He wasn’t just afraid of becoming his father. He was afraid of failing as a husband. He was scared of failing the person he loved more than the world.” Colten exhaled. I imagined his face softening. “He loved this whole family so much. You share the best parts of his empathy. For better or for worse-” “I didn’t let you talk with me just for you to say ‘I’m the best parts of my father.’” Mace responded, sharper than before. I heard Colten lean forward. “...What do you want me to say then?” Mace gives a hollow sigh. “I don’t know.” I hear him rub his face as he whispers. “I don’t know what I want anymore.”

This is part of chapter 2. It's a flashback that follows shortly after Tarin enters the town of Ryun. It's hard not to think of the family you've lost when you see someone who reminds you a person dear to you.

I actually constructed the bodies this time (broke it own into shapes), and wow it made my life so much easier. I've fallen into the habit of simply eyeballing everything which makes complex poses harder. I also used my own hands as reference to practice drawing fingers. I need to practice more but it's a start at improving my anatomy.

I shifted the color pallet to be warmer this time, it's subtle but makes the characters feel part of the scene. I've only done that once before, same goes for a "full" background as well.

I may do more of these outside of tumblr. I like how it makes my space feel more mine.

I used a different method, since the paper I'm using was already fairly thick I could cut it and tape it down easily. Tarin(on the right), is attached through a part of the paper that was bent behind him and then taped to the shelf. Unlike Vulcan who is 100% gonna fall at some point. I taped the backside directly to the shelf. Unlike Tarin who could stay sturdy without tape, Vulcan will fully fall without support.

(Woah fanart, what happened to the OCs?)

Found the show for the yaoi, stayed for the yaoi. Screencap redraw of Fox and Wolf in my artstyle. I tried to match the lighting of the original but my brain is too small to do it well.

It is really od how this show that came out in 2001 is suddenly getting a surge of popularity this year(over two decades later, from a completely different generation than the show was likely targeting). Can't say I'm a fan of some of the writing choices but I'm a sucker for puppets so this show got my attention quickly. Also some of it being lost media is wild, it's really interesting being able to stalk watch the hunt happen in discord servers.

I've been having some writer's block but not art block so this piece was born. I've actually started to revisit an old fanfic from March? April? I can't remember and don't feel like checking. Fanfiction has always helped giving me a much needed break from original writing

Warning for... Blood on: hands, mouth, and teeth. Nothing more than that.

I'm in the process of finalizing chapter 2 and had the decided to illustrate one of the flashbacks. Without going into graphic detail, think of Ekko and Jinx's fight from Arcane S1 as an all out brawl that instead ended in Jinx dying. (This illustration is technically less graphic than what actually happens. If the blood around the muzzle is any indication of the event.) Oh, why did Tarin tear and claw someone to death? You'll see, if I ever finish the short story.

I decided to go for a more detailed style, adding extra fluff to give Tarin more depth here. I tried a different style of rendering blood then I normally do, using a combination of a splatter brush and hand painting on the fur(compression is probably gonna remove those details). I also decided to draw the eyes in a more realistic style to fit the serious tone. For the background I dived into Krita's brush engine as none of the presets quite matched what I wanted.

It is crazy how simply doodling can vastly change your artstyle over time. I've been mainly story boarding OC video things and writing.

(Part four of "June gets a spark of inspiration at 3am and doodles something.)

I've had designs for Athen and Lock floating around in my head and my sketchbook so I decided to get something out. The Palean character for Athen's name was something I doodled randomly. Palean as a language is extremely unfinished at the moment. It's inspired by Japanese with some indirect Korean influence. I haven't done much with it as I don't speak a lick of either(I know two Japanese words, no three). Tarish was much easier because I had a decent grasp on Spanish and speak English fluently. Palean is more work as I'm learning the basic structure of a foreign language informally. Wikipedia's language resources have been extremely helpful for this. I found it under the wikiversity section.

Athen(27) is a hardworking schoolteacher, she teaches Mathematics and Language. She also manages the lesson plans for every subject. There's one other teacher alongside her that teaches science and history who also acts as the sort of principal. They both work close with Pinmiré's mayor to manage finances. This other teacher and the principal don't really exist yet, I don't have plans to give them designs or personalities either right now.

Lock(5) speaks one language and is learning Palean from Vulcan, his mother as well when she has the time. He's the easy going type of kid, picking up respect quickly and listens to his parents without protest.

I was rendering a doodle from my sketchbook and then I started experimenting with armor and Tarin's general design. I increased Tarin's floof which helps him fit in with the environment he was born in. (snow almost year round, very cold).

What are the flags at the top? Well there's one large continent with two distinct sides, The Tubian Kingdom(south) and Palea(north). Tarin was drafted to fight for Palea's independence from the Tubian Kingdom. I tried to reflect each side's culture through the flags, I think I did this better with the Palea flag than the Tubian one.

Palea stands for equality and prosperity in its people. The Tubian Kingdom cares more for its status, people are just numbers to them.

My first week of artfight is coming to an end, so here all my attacks so far! I've made it a goal to play with my art-style while participating. I've started tweaking Tarin's design a bit from the inspiration I've gotten from other artist's characters. I won't be finalizing this design until after the event but from what I have it will be very minor. I won't post the attacks I've received as I have not asked for explicit permission. If you did happen to attack me(you know who you are) I appreciate it, truly. I love seeing your takes on my own characters that I cherish.

I would have liked to do more this first week but I'm happy with what I managed to get done. I drew some cools OCs, did a pose and did two(technically one) side profiles. Check out all these artists! I only linked the artfight accounts of the last two as I don't believe they have Tumblr accounts.

I got a spark of inspiration to give some designs to some minor characters Tarin meets in Chapter 1: Acitas, "Gruff", (still to be designed) "translator", Juno and Okel.

I'm going to try changing Tarin's story to actually end when he finally reaches home. I don't want to spoil what I have in mind but it feels nice to be able to more closely acknowledge the book that inspired this story. I think this is the most I've really talked about Tarin's story publicly outside of what you could glean from character descriptions and art.

Here's some rough character descriptions and extra info on the town below

Seia: A small town that borders The Tubian Kingdom but resides in the North (Palea). This town has been hit the hardest by military raids from both sides of the ongoing Palea war for independence.

Acitas: The local Cartographer of Seia. She doesn't live with any family, keeping mostly to herself as her old age has begun to weigh her down. You will often see her in the sky regardless, mapping out the wilderness and keeping track of the drama one can see from above.

"Gruff": Often initially hostile towards newcomers, especially when first meeting Tarin. The primary heavy lifter of the cleanup crew. [Minor reference to one of my favorite indie films that has the same name. Go watch it! The storytelling style I like to go for. link]

"Translator": Second heavy lifter of the cleanup crew. They have a sister that served in the Palea military and help translate Tarin's signs for the other 3. Which saves Tarin some paper and graphite. They're friendly although nervous around soldiers like Acitas is. [I'd like to imagine they have a sort of grandmother-child role with one another.]

Juno: Also fairly hostile towards newcomers, even attempt to dismiss Tarin at first. Helps with the smaller bits of rubble and checks for what can be salvaged from a damaged building.

Okel: Helps direct the cleanup trio. He's related to the baker of the Seia and often gifts baked goods to travelers. He's one of the nicer residents you'll meet in Seia.

I wanted to give Valerian a little more before Art Fight actually starts (in about 10 hours from now because it's 2am). I ended up coming up with this. It's a bit on the edgy side but hey nothing wrong with that.

I'm not great with backgrounds as you can see. I like how the lighting came out with the dust in the sunrays and the shadow being cast by Valerian. My favorite thing about his new design is how dangerous he looks with the eyeliner. It's a distinct contrast to his softer personality behind closed doors.
