Close your eyes. Now forget what you see. What do you feel?
Bonobo by Ben Williams Via Flickr:
The bonobo, Pan paniscus, formerly called the pygmy chimpanzee and less often, the dwarf or gracile chimpanzee, is a great ape and one of the two species making up the genus Pan; the other is Pan troglodytes, or the common chimpanzee. Although the name “chimpanzee” is sometimes used to refer to both species together, it is usually understood as referring to the common chimpanzee, while Pan paniscus is usually referred to as the bonobo.

While these gifs may look cute, they are the direct result of animal cruelty.
This is a baby macaque. Macaques, like all monkeys, spend their infancy and childhoods entirely dependant on their mothers. A macaque this age would still be breastfeeding, clinging to its mother, and would never be more than two arms length from her. In order to seperate highly protective macaque mothers from their babies, they are either killed or are captured so they can be repeatedly bred and have their infants taken. People with pet monkeys often call what they do "rescue" or claim that the infant was abandoned, but they are often lying or misled to avoid backlash.
This baby is NOT exhibiting natural behavior. Macaques are predominantly quadrupedal and walking upright for more than a few steps at a time at this age can and will likely cause permanent musculoskeletal damage and excessive wear on the pelvis if done regularly. The monkey has been trained to do this while carrying toys specifically to make videos that people find cute.
Macaques are the most commonly exploited and abused primate on social media, and the people who make these videos are making money from abusing them. When we spread content that shows pet monkeys we are promoting their mistreatment. Just because we cannot see what happens when the camera is turned off doesn't mean it isn't happening, and doesn't mean that we are not part of the problem. The way we use social media matters.
This is an animal that has been forcefully taken from its mother, forced to perform unnatural behaviours, and is being exploited for views. Baby monkeys belong with their mothers in the wild, not as performers for our entertainment.
obsessed with chimpanzee play faces. silly lil fellas :)
I've recently noticed an increase in well-meaning people sharing unethical primate memes.
Unfortunately, the primates in these memes were either taken directly from their habitat to be sold or their parents are breeders that were themselves taken from the wild.
Worse yet, when baby primates are taken from the wild often times their older relatives are poached and sold for meat.
This all contributes to the reason why the majority of primates are endangered.
Let's all do our part by thinking before sharing!
