Okay but the Obx fandom is so anti-black to Pope like I have been on Instagram and Twitter they way those shippers get mad when Pope gets shipped with Kiara even though he is with her or JJ like what did Pope do to get them so mad? He’s literally the sweetest, It’s so weird why do people like to downplay ships with Pope
Me and a few others have made posts about this in regards to kiepope/people being against it, the pope hate of this fandom that extends to his other relationships including jjpope, and antiblackness within the writing of the show and reaction from fandom. These are just a few but my general tags for fandom racism delve into this a lot more.
In sum, a majority white fandom will consistently hate black and brown characters in any type of media if they don’t act to the utmost benefit of their white counterparts, are allowed to act irrationally/in anger,or dare to take up any space/screen time at all. So anything to do with their characters and by extension their relationships with others is subject to the same vitriol and can manifest even if people are proponents of those ships, when they are completely overshadowed in those relationships (have already seen this with jjpope fans that exclusively care about jj and use pope as more of a prop than anything). This isn’t anything new and yet people will find new ways to justify their antiblackness and act like it’s simple preference.
you don’t have to love pope as a character, but anyone claiming they don’t like him because of his actions/reactions that they can easily excuse with white characters (jj,johnb,sarah, the legit psycho rafe) doing comparably ‘bad’ (and I use that term lightly) things is full of shit. Not to mention acting as if one likes his character its only by erasing the things he does/they consider ‘bad’ as if he’s not allowed to have (even with the general garbage writing of the show) complex feelings and irrational actions/decisions. Like what are people on to do these mental gymnastics?
things I see the most that are used as ‘evidence’ of how awful pope is
-he lashed out at kie asking why she always puts johnb first
-his weed laced spiral after knowing they lost the gold and leaving his scholarship interview
-he brushes off kie the morning after he confessed
-when he almost kills rafe (this one always gets me because people act as if pope just saw rafe and decided he was going to beat him to death, like, I don’t know, EXACTLY WHAT RAFE DID WHEN HE DECIDED TO JUMP POPE???)
If you’re looking at any of these situations and calling pope ‘toxic’ or ‘abusive’/‘sexist’ to kie and generally aggressive/ sooo ‘ooc’ in these situations, not only are u full of shit but ur grasping for invisible straws that anyone watching more than 2min of those scenes could see through clearly (well that must not be true given how easily people warp it to their liking) within the context of the situations themselves. But aside from that, there’s also the idea that people cannot accept a black character do literally anything that doesn’t actively benefit/help the white characters/ or be allowed react to a trauma or experience they alone endure/feel. And this inability to see pope as a three dimensional character with flaws and complexity that is ALREADY on par with the rest of the Pogues is so transparently racist, whether they realize it or not.
