@pope-mayward
(to the tone of creep by radiohead) but i'm asleep. on mypillow
Small comci based on this tweet
it's really funny how the entire world basically just blew the fuck up six short years ago and nobody wants to admit that that may have had some lasting consequences lmao
like so much of Everything today is premised on the idea that the earth-shattering catastrophe which happened within living memory of everyone older than a third grader has had no meaningful material or psychological effects on the general public and i don't think that's good, lol.
"(some of) the top-line economic indicators (sorta) recovered (in most places) so everything is fine and we don't need to talk about it" is not a sustainable framework for interfacing with reality
"why is everyone so angry and paranoid now?" "why is politics so dysfunctional now?" "why is [x] [y] and [z] now? blah blah blah"
2020:
kids these days don't know what it felt like to be bisexual and wear a stupid as fuck hawaiian shirt in 2017
i posted a jjpope fic! AU from that season 2 hot tub scene
gleaming, twinkling (eyes like sinking ships)
btw hes reading "infinite jest" by david foster wallace. i looked into it and some of the main themes are drugs withdrawl and recovery, as well as worship, with the author stating "everybody worships, the only choice we get is what we worship" (according to the wikipedia page, i haven't read it)
in the context of obx or more specifically barry and rafe, the themes of this book obviously reflect them, and theres also some biblical references that could tie to barry's view/relationship with religion (but thats more of a headcannon). plus the whole thing about worship: that could totally be rafe worshiping barry and the dom/sub relationship thats evident both in the show and in fic
finally this book is 1000 pages which is roughly 500,000 words. aka veryyy long, and barry clearly has his finger following along with the words, so he's locked the hell in. this is such an underrated moment because it makes him look smart, showing that his character could be more than just the funny/scary drug dealer dude. outside of this, he makes smart decisions (or at least smarter than what rafe thinks up) such as not wanting to turn the sewer pipe thing(?) when kie was in the sewer looking for ward's gun, and also talking rafe out of a panic attack
gonna do my best to keep it brief but this is like my fav thing everrrr
so i normally start w their relationships to rafe and jj respectively. both have a proclaimed 'best friend' in topper and john b respectively and yet we mostly see them alone with barry and pope. we see them most vulnerable with barry and pope, when things go wrong these are the two they go to first. they also seem to indulge in their worst personality traits with them because they know they wont be judged if anything theyre embraced. and its v important to me that both rafe and jj are not necessarily good people and they both have someone they can express that with to minimal judgement.
now gonna focus on pope, i think pope is more layered than fandom allows him to be bc everyone feels an aneurysm come on when it comes to giving black characters depth and analysis--but pope is a fuck up. and on purpose mind you. when barry tells rafe hes had every job still cant make money and thats why he sells drugs well is that not why pope also looks for the easy way out? sure he can go to school get a scholarship but he still has to work, he still has to struggle, nothing is a sure thing. but money from treasure oh he's set for life. pope lies and steals and cheats sometimes from his own family. hes repressed and angry, hes a lot of things.
but barry and pope are both smart, way smarter than their counterparts and are often the guiding line to their bad ideas (whether or not they listen is another story). i think its notable that barry and pope are to my memory the only characters we see reading, and seeing pope read a book about a man who becomes disgusting and unknowable to his family but he cant stop himself well thats very much how he ends the season with bobby. i mean hes gonna end the show a fugitive as well. pope says a lot but hes in it for the money and does a lot more dubious shit than ppl want to admit.
haven’t seen jjpope on my dash for some while
