i feel like the offhanded bigoted remarks were much easier to stomach in iwtv s1 and s2 when we had an intentionally made product which provided commentary and framed them in the proper light. not to mention that most of the previous seasons were period pieces, with the derogatory language used to tell us something about the environment we’re inhabiting.

now, almost all of the bigoted remarks are happening in the present day with no framing to indicate how the audience is supposed to feel about them. they are primarily played for comedy rather than drama and the audience is encouraged to laugh at the marginalized (especially racialized and ESPECIALLY Black) characters.

in hindsight i’m glad they changed the fucking name. you cannot describe a Black character as “louisiana fried chicken” and then act like it’s at all comparable to the artistic merit and thoughtful social commentary of the first two seasons

Watched the first episode of Interview with the Vampire the other day and felt absolute disappointment when I felt how rich and refreshing it still feels to this day compared to the mind-numbingly boring, and cringeworthy first “episode” of the vampire lestat. I was begging for the episode to be over with so that I could finally get to the actual story and there is still no story. Just scene after scene of filler and throwaway characters and all kinds of useless shit.

“It’s chaotic because it’s lestat’s voice and mental state” was an acceptable explanation for ep1 or maybe ep2, but at a certain point, you actually have to tell the story and give the characters substance. This isn’t a 22-episode season. There’s no time for filler. We’ve gotten through 5 eps out of 7 and so far there isn’t even substance to the MAIN character.

I think I speak for everyone in this fandom when I say that we need Black writers back in the writer’s room.

The Black writers for seasons 1-2 of IWTV were Ben Philippe, David B Harris, and A. Zell Williams.

These are the men responsible for providing substance and depth to the Black characters in the first two seasons, mainly Louis and Claudia. They knew how to tackle struggle, injustices, history, rage, pain, and the ugly truth of American and European Black history. They didn’t pull punches with the hard stuff and they knew how to work with the soft stuff.

Season 3 tried to create edgy content and humor without these men and absolutely failed at it in every way possible. And they have failed both Louis and Claudia.

The Black jokes about Louis being “Louisiana Fried Chicken”, Louis continuing to be the pimp and needing his White savior that is Lestat, Claudia’s entire monologue about Louis being a literal slave to Lestat in that old Louisiana accent. And not to mention the complete erasure of Lemuel after only a couple episodes.

It’s not working.

If there’s gonna be Black actors on screen, there needs to be Black writers in the writer’s room.

i'm sorry but uh, why do black characters have to be perfect? compared to most of the characters on the show, including the white characters, she's already an angel, but you object to them making her flawed?

Your complaints read as being upset that a character who says offensive things we're meant to find offensive said an offensive thing, and being upset that other black characters have flaws.

Jacob said that he loved that black characters on this show are allowed to have flaws and be monstrous sometimes. Not everything needs to be "good representation"

black characters do not have to be perfect, in fact i love when they're flawed, it gives them depth and makes them even more interesting to watch and discuss—however, you see no issue in the way both of the black women shown thus far have been written? what do we know about dee aside from her being fed on and fucked by lestat/whoever else he decides he wants that night? what do we know about regina aside from her being a sex worker with mountains of debt and a criminal record that clearly needs money? the black women in this show are just being used as tools to further the story for the men (oftentimes the white men), and that ties back to the previous episode with louis reading claudia's diary to her rapist and her only being raped in the first place because the white show runner believed it'd toughen her up.

louis' character has just been one humiliation after another in regards to people that are supposed to be his friends or at least care about him some small amount (but even that is questionable). he is mocked by lestat, disrespected by daniel and received no apology from armand, and i hear that it doesn't get much better. jacob literally said that he felt like he was playing a different character this season and i don't disagree.

beyond that, having flawed black characters is pointless when half of the viewers engaging with them are either racist, know nothing about antiblack writing/misogynoir, or just have a fundamental misunderstanding of the characters to begin with. and obviously don't care to look into why it's fucked up to have a black character referred to as "a bucket of fried chicken" or be nothing more than a financially unstable sex worker so we can understand why they'd pretend to be someone's dead daughter. why couldn't regina just be fucked up and into that? why is financial desperation tied to these black women?

black characters can be flawed, but not knowing how to write or engage with them toes the line between an imperfect character and a flat out racist caricature

Having the camera zoom in on Lestat and focus on Lestat’s reactions as if he’s the tortured Black woman stuck in hell for all eternity without a lover….

“You need to rewatch the episodes to truly understand and appreciate the vampire lestat!” Oh okay so you want me to have an aneurysm.

The fact that Louis has a Black vampire love interest who is ignored and not once shown in any other scenes (that have nothing to do with Lestat) revealing who his character is and why he is here with Louis in the first place, and we never see Louis cozying up and being affectionate with him in any way is a choice.

So Louis isn’t allowed to have not one tender moment with a dark-skinned Black man but we have to see scene after scene of Lestat doing fuckall with throwaway women (and no men or other queer people whatsoever) and an incestuous relationship with his mother on top of that. Foul. The treatment of women and queer men/people is disgusting.

Can I ask— I’ve not seen the most recent episode and am not the most educated on how anti blackness presents itself in this season (I can guess but I just want to make sure) what has happened this ep and in the past eps that make it especially bad? I don’t like this season at all fr I think what they’re doing with Louis and Regina is a bit fucked and the whole thing with lestats mom is weird but I’m definitely missing something and would love to be educated on it if you’re okay with doing so

The thing you have to know is that if in the first two seasons you have a show which used the Gothic genre to tell a story of abuse and racism- where there were two black characters who were driven to murder the white patriarch of the house to flee from this abuse, and then comes s3 where basically everything from the previous seasons gets retconned or remains unaddressed or are made into punchlines, then there's something insidious that's going on. If anti blackness is the ha-ha joke, then I think the writing on the wall is pretty clear atp.

I will give you an example: the Salamander character wears a "Hip Hop sucks" shirt in the previous episode and then the actor ( i think) makes a jokey post about how so and so is trying to get him canceled. So these people who are involved in the project know the weight there is to these words-> what it sounds like to have used a costume which dismisses an entire genre of black music, and what did they do with the shirt? what was the intention behind using it? Did this lead anywhere? Was it to have a conversation about a white rock band ( rock and roll, a genre which grew out of African american music ) being hypocrites, who in one breathe both takes advantage of and dismisses Black art/music? I don't know because there was nothing. In a season so obsessed with telling instead of showing mind you.

A TV show doesn't have to have a meta commentary about everything sure, but the thing is in the previous seasons as we followed Louis and Claudia, their blackness in itself was a very present thing in the show because as the story unfolded we saw how the world reacts to them as both humans and as vampires. Using the Gothic to explore violence etc; so how is it that when this season rolls in, and as showrunner you tell the viewers not to worry, the previous lead black character is still a co-lead in the show and then proceed the entire show having this character being mocked and insulted- "Louisiana fried chicken"/ "cancerous jackal"/"big bad wolf"/ "whore Thomas Pitty" with no pushback from the narrative itself? On top of that it is LDPDL who is doing the apologizing in every episode. Lestat has the blood of Akasha in him, so his anger gets the best of him it is said and sure there was Louis saying "no that's not it, it is what you do with the blood..." But this is also the episode where you have Ghost!Claudia hurling slurs at Louis. Throughout the season everyone is taking a dunk at Louis and now you have a all white writer's room making Ghost!Claudia hurl slurs at Louis and saying she actually likes the white man better than you ( this white man being the co-lyncher with Armand). Louclaudia was the heart of the show in the previous seasons; whatever frustration despair and even hate Claudia may have had for Louis, it was always true that the undercurrent of it were love. This is the girl who said to her Papa Lou "his love is a small box he keeps you in, don't let him"/ she pleaded with him that there are other vampires who will be worthy of his love. She pleaded with uncle Les to hurt her instead of Louis and now her ghost is saying Louis is not even her blood? Lestat is her maker??? The black child saying the white patriarch is her own blood, more so than LDPDL? As if during her turning, Madeline wasn't trying to give courage to Claudia by saying don't worry about the blood, its the blood that made you it can't be bad, because that's how torn Claudia was.

There are metas which say that the reason Ghost!Claudia tore into Louis so harshly was because she was angry that after everything Louis still chose Lestat, who participated in her lynching and had made life hell in Rue Royale, but after a whole season of Louis being the punching bag it just feels needlessly cruel. Claudia is not a real person, she doesn't exist in this world, she is a fictional character and an all white writer's room chose that she is to hurl slurs at Louis to show her anger. We also find out Louis was sexually abused as a child in one sentence and again that's just there, Claudia's rape was used to draw parallels to Lestat's traumatic turning. If in s1 while being an antagonist in Louis/Claudia's life Lestat still seemed like a full character with the weight of the un- life haunting him, why is everything about Lestat this season? Even a black character's trauma? What will you call this except for anti blackness?

it’s not hard to look at iwtv and tvl through a racial lens (i’m a black woman) but everytime armand is mocked for being a “rag doll”, “rent boy” , “bottom beta boi twink” or any version of those three it just feels like orientalism and racist stereotypes about south asian men and that feeling is only amplified knowing armand’s history like it just feels so disgusting to me

it also bothers me when ppl infantilize armand for this very reason or comment on how “small” he is (assad is taller than sam, jacob, and eric) i think the framing makes armand look smaller on purpose to emphasize that he was young when he was turned and all of the abuse he went through as child, teen, and young adult but the way other people describe and talk about him esp on here by mostly white people

I feel so shitty for having such a visceral emotional reaction to this episode but it's like... it's not just the show that has been a special interest of mine for years becoming mediocre or bad, it feels actively hostile to anyone who loved the first 2 seasons and how they portrayed the characters and themes. It's hard not to read at least some active maliciousness in the writing after this episode.

Anyway what shows are we watching to fill the void? I'm thinking of starting Black Sails

I love show!Lestat dearly despite the monster he is in his cruelty and feel for him for the abuses he suffered but Louis and more importantly Claudia had every right to resent him in Nola because he was an older white vampire who had racial and ancient vampiric powers over the both of them. People keep harping on how Lestat would never kill Louis but Louis could be persuaded to kill Lestat (something he didn't do mind you, has no one watched 1.07???) and how that is a short coming Louis should make up for but Louis never did anything to Lestat that would warrant an overreaction of that sort till Mardi Gras and Mardi Gras was a direct response to Lestat's abusive actions. Louis was extremely depressed, coping poorly with vampirism, and trying to reconcile with the fact that being a vampire had little impact on his identity as a gay black man in the south. The worst thing he did to Lestat specifically (he failed Claudia plenty) was failing to understand Lestat's point of view and show enough interest in him as a partner to understand that Lestat was also struggling (made nights miserable for him because he was also suffering). In comparison Lestat dropped Louis from the fucking sky, paralyzed him for months because of the fact and cheated on him for the entirety of their relationship. Not to speak of the humiliation of acting as a servant for your lover and the systemic racism bleeding into their relationship in the form of differences in liberties afforded to the both of them which also became gendered with Claudia's addition. Louis admits that he was contemplating a walk in the sun the night Claudia left on the train, meaning Lestat did break him enough to contemplate death. The gothic aspect of the show, at least for me, is derived from Louis' almost unnatural (preternatural) love for Lestat despite the fact that he broke him and that love making him choose Lestat over and over again despite all circumstances.

The showrunners trying to trivialise the domestic violence by way of not addressing it with enough reverence in the third season (big bad wolf, Lestat's various snide comments on Louis etc.) in order to make Lestat more likeable (which ??? Lestat is a popular character) is actively undermining the beautiful nuance of the show. Lestat should be able to exist in the context of the show both as a victim of domestic violence as well as a preparator who couldn't break out of the cycle. So far in this season, as a viewer, the writers have tried to soft retcon the worst of the abuse he committed by repeatedly bringing up the most irrelevant things that Louis supposedly lied about and providing very little information on the stuff he didn't make up. This kind of writing leaves enough room for the audience to wonder whether Louis was just a bitter ex who is lying on Lestat who was emotionally neglected by Louis and whether it was some kind of "mutual abuse" (not a real thing) when in reality the violence in season 1 was largely racialized and gendered. The most egregious instance of this ambiguity in writing was in the 5th episode when they showed the flashback to the drop from the sky while Lestat was talking about his corrupt blood. The editing is ambiguous enough to make it seem like the drop could be a result of the effect Akasha's blood has on Lestat (and I've seen many people arrive at that conclusion). This could be a subjective take but this kind of writing is disrespectful to the intelligence of the audience and takes a lot away from Lestat as a character. If they wanted Lestat to be a defanged monster, they should've never made Louis a black man in the 1910s suffering racial violence or made Lestat drop Louis from the sky in a very clear act of domestic violence in the first place. Because of the systemic racial hierarchy present in our society, Lestat's mere existance as a white French man of considerable means in the American south of early 20th C itself positions him as someone who will have a predatory influence over Louis even without the vampirism. Adding ambiguity to that kind of inherent violence to soften Lestat's image is simply not nuanced writing.

This problem doesn't exist in the books because Louis is not a black man in the books. While Lestat is violent towards Louis and Louis airs out his grievances about Lestat prompting Lestat to be unabashedly bitter about Louis' portrayal of him, the blow is softened by the fact that Lestat and Louis are sort of equals in terms of the racial privileges they enjoy. There is no systemic violence and the conflict is primarily guided by the supernatural violence of vampirism. However, Anne Rice is never weighed down by trivial concerns of morality or desirability of her monsters and embraces the violence and depravity to the fullest. The show chose to do the race swap for key characters and for a time it truly did feel like the greatest thing they could've done, not for any "woke" reasons but for the added nuance to the story. But now I go on the internet and have to hear takes from their racist ass audience on why Louis, who is in his own right a perfectly exploitative monster who has made many mistakes, is a complete liar who retroactively deserved the violent abuse (part of which was explicitly racial) done to him because of a book that he never wanted published which documents both his abuse as well as the love he holds for his abuser. I cannot believe that I used to love the show more than the books and now I'm filling out my Anne Rice apology form because at least she wasn't a cowardly little bitch who couldn't handle her monsters being morally reprehensible. I do not know if the show will address the stuff Louis was not lying about in the two remaining episodes but I have very little confidence in the showrunners to bring in any sort of nuance to that discussion considering the writing choices that went into the directionless portrayal of parental abuse in the form of incest they've provided all season (again for a character she never cared for, Anne Rice cooked hard with Gabrielle and the showrunners burnt down the kitchen).
