Athletes of Size Special! Mark Henry

Olympian weightlifter Mark Henry is one of the few lifters in history to make the deceptively complex transition from powerlifting to Olympic weightlifting, which focuses more on timing and technique than pure strength. His competed for the US at the 1992 and 1996 games before retiring from the sport. He would continue to compete in various powerlifting competition and in 2002 after only 4th months of training he stunningly won the Arnold Strongman Classic, besting the world’s most seasons Strongman competitors. His feats of strength include numerous world records and “First Ever” accomplishments, and Henry was inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame in 2012 as part of its inaugural class. One of the most singularly impressive aspects of his athletic career is that his accomplishments have come with no serious suspicion of use of performance enhancing drugs. Indeed, one reason Henry cited for retiring from Olympic weightlifting was the pervasive influence of drugs in the competitions. He has consistently and persuasively denied any drug use throughout his career and has often been called the strongest drug-free athlete ever.

Following the 1996 Olympics, Henry embarked on a career in professional wrestling with WWE, training at Calgary’s legendary Hart Dungeon. Though early in his career, he was often stunted by injuries and breaks to train for his continued athletic competitions, he eventually rose to be one of the company’s most popular performers. Recent years have seen Henry in premiere roles as World Champion and has been a consistent fan favorite.

This is a perfect example of why we need things designed for a variety of body types.  Far too many plus-sized clothes are skinny clothes just made bigger, which rarely (if ever) have the desired effect.  Not only do things not look the same in this context, it’s fair to say they were not designed (or redesigned) to look good on these different body shapes.  The options are often mumus or things not really designed for you.

This man has come up with a variety of amazing outfits that look fantastic on his body. We need more of this.
