An Atheist's Perspective on Anti-Theism
As an Atheist, I hold the fundamental belief that there is no God. I think that religion is a waste of time and effort.
This belief, however, does not give me, or anyone else, the right to tell someone that their religion is wrong. A fact that is blatantly ignored by the "Anti-Theists."
Anti-Theists believe that religion is harmful to society and must be wiped completely from this planet. They do this by openly criticizing religion and religious people. This is WRONG.
To religious people, their doctrine means everything. It is their hope, their shelter, and their comfort in tough times. How is that harmful? If religion helps a person, let it! How does it hurt you that they believe in something? It doesn't. Religion isn't harmful.
As a staunch Atheist, I hate it when a Christian tells me that I'm going to Hell for not believing in their God. When that happens, I want to go off and tell them just how ridiculous their doctrine is and that it is nonsense. I don't, though. I abstain because what they say don't harm me. They're spouting bullshit. So, what? If they feel the need to comfort themselves by terrorizing me, so be it. I am secure enough in my beliefs that I don't feel the need to shove them onto other people.
Indeed, I believe that being an Anti-Theist is a stupid way to combat religion.
Here is an example. I hate peas. Does that mean that I'm going to endeavor to remove them from the planet? No, because that would be a waste of time and energy. Does my hatred of peas mean that I have to tell everyone that eats them that they are incorrect and need to change their ways? No. The same should be true of those who don't like religion.
I am an Atheist. I don't believe in religion. Though I could tell everyone I meet that religion is wrong, I choose not to. I don't have to push my beliefs onto someone else to validate them. With that in mind, that Anti-Theists feel the need to openly criticize religion is ridiculous.
Tolerance should be practiced by everyone.
