omg you're too pretty to do medicine!
I know you didnât mean this in a mean way, but I have to tell you that I really hate this idea.Â
I want you to realize that this is a really offensive idea thatâs been propagated by a misogynistic society: women are pretty, but women are dumb.Â
WRONG!
There are so many things wrong with this statement that I donât even know where to begin with it.Â
First, beauty has nothing to do with whatâs on the outside. Maybe whatâs âconventionally attractiveâ has some external standard, but thatâs not beauty. Beauty comes from who a person is and whatâs inside them. There are thousands of conventionally pretty people who have nothing beautiful on the insideâonly cruelty and hatred. I see that as ugly. And there are thousands of people who donât meet a ridiculous, impossible, european standard of beauty who are the most beautiful people I have ever met, because they have love and joy on the inside.Â
So, I probably do meet some of that stupid beauty standard because I happened to have been born with a certain set of random chromosomes.Â
That is not what makes me beautiful.Â
I am beautiful because I have the capacity for love. Because I have joy. Because I find a way to reach out to others. Because I have passion in what I do. Because I pursue the things that make me happy. Because I have made peace with my body. Because Iâm learning to pick love and joy over negativity and hatred.Â
If I lacked any of that and was left only with that set of random chromosomesâI might meet a standardâbut I would not be beautiful.Â
Secondly, you need to know that there are dozens of types of intelligence: verbal intelligence, kinesthetic intelligence, social intelligence, etc. I happen to have some of those types of intelligence, but many of them I lack.Â
I believe that my types of intelligence will serve me well in a career in medicine.Â
But that does not make me smarter than someone who builds rockets for a living or someone who plays basketball for a living or someone who drives a cab for a living or someone who sells cars for a living or anyone else.Â
We all simply have different skills and different types of intelligence.Â
I lack the spacial intelligence needed to drive a cab, I lack the kinesthetic intelligence needed to play any sort of sport involving a ball, I lack the social intelligence to sell anyone anything and I like the quantitative intelligence to do the calculations needed to build rockets. That doesnât make me stupid. It just makes me different than people who can.Â
You will NEVER be able to predict what kind of intelligence someone has just by looking at them on the outside.Â
And if you do, if you believe someone is âtoo fatâ to dance, or âtoo shortâ to play basketball, or âtoo prettyâ to do medicineâyouâre going to be wrong⊠every damn time.Â
So, stop. Please. Stop. Right now. Stop buying into the ridiculous ideas that youâve been taught. Stop believing that whatâs on the outside can define whatâs within and that beauty is about that outside instead of the inside.
Because the only thing you do by believing that load of crapâis make yourself and everyone around you unhappy.Â
See, we were never about butterflies. Weâve always been about burning stars. All about us is unearthly and radiant.
