I know it’s not the most nuanced and sensitively handled piece of media but I’m so glad the Purge went from subtle social commentary to full on “Fuck the government, fuck the KKK and neo Nazis and the NRA, here are the poor black communities fighting back against government sanctioned genocide”

Each film has a great overarching theme as well

The Purge: the rich will literally not care about the death of the poor at the hands of the government until the violence inflicted on them is brought to their doorstep, the only exception among the rich being the young and empathetic

Purge Anarchy: the government is straight up lying when they say the Purge is working, and there are significant groups of resistance who have lost someone to an abusive government who come together to fight for each other

Purge Election Year: the only way to bring change to an abusive government is by supporting and electing officials who are working against the existing abusive regime, and that regime will often stop at nothing to prevent that kind of change, so people should never stop fighting for their chosen leaders

The First Purge: your government will manipulate results in order to make themselves look good. They will lie, they will pay to make something look more effective than it actually is, if they will profit from it. The government is anti-poor and racist as all get out and the community will protect each other more than an abusive government ever will.

It’s not a perfect series but I’m so glad the creators have no fucks left to give regarding their message.

It’s kind of frustrating when people try to talk about how the Purge wouldn’t work in the manner that the regime describes which… yeah, of course not, that’s propaganda to generate support for the anti-poor, anti-people of colour direction a lot of the violence ends up being directed.

The idea (besides its classism and racism) seems to be to enforce a kind of social control by making everyone act in a non-confrontional, non-aggressive manner in case they set off a neighbour or co-worker in a way that leads to violent reprisals when the next Purge day rolls around.

The idea behind the Purge doesn’t work… but the fear that it might, or that it’ll be used as an excuse by the tiny, tiny group of the population who would be okay reacting violently to a perceived slight, is implictly meant to keep folk as polite and nice as possible…OR ELSE.

It’s kind of like how in 1984, it’s inferred that the cameras aren’t necessarily what allows the Party to rule as it does, it’s people informing on and betraying each other in order to escape a potential abusive government response. The state can’t see everything you do, but the idea that it might leads to the kind of paranoia where everyone informs on everyone else in order to deflect accusations and the resulting abusive government response on to everyone else.
