i don't think eddie knows he treats buck as a spouse, and i think him realizing that may be crucial to eddie figuring it out.

in his failmarriage to shannon, they were apart more than they were together. shannon left because she felt eddie wasn't treating her like a spouse/partner. in his childhood, husband = provider, so that's what he did. i truly don't think he realizes that he has unintentionally cast buck into that spouse role in a way he never did shannon.

every person who has directly* called buck and eddie out has almost always called buck out. christmas elf, now tommy and maddie. but aside from that one bobby conversation about commitment with the obvious pause(*), no one has ever pushed eddie the same way. i think that is the key.

i think eddie knows he loves buck almost as much as christopher and no one else comes close. it's why eddie subconsciously pitted them against each other in 8x09 when no one asked him to. when buck would never ask him to.

but no one has ever mentioned how insane buck and eddie are to eddie, and i think that's the important for eddie. he doesn't know because he doesn't let himself see it. i think it is good for him to get distance from buck and realize how it just feels wrong. it's important that he realizes his happiest moments are when he, chris, and buck are together. i don't even think eddie realizes the only times he gets truly mad at buck are when he feels distance. he needs someone to help him see the whole picture. where buck denies it because he is scared and refuses to look at it, i think (after some introspection) eddie would accept it much easier than buck. which is why we have seen it brought up to buck in canon already, but no one has said anything to eddie yet.

About the space from Buck thing. We've kinda already seen this in S4 during the whole lawsuit era. Eddie was so used to depending on Buck to co-parent Chris with that the second Buck wasn't there to help with their grieving child, the man fucking spiralled into an illegal fight club, lost his temper and got arrested.

But yes, I do agree someone needs to push this man to understand how totally not platonic his relationship is with his best friend. They are their own nuclear family your honor.
