okay, so everyone has set up the main rivalry in Black Panther as Killmonger vs TâChalla. And obviously thatâs the main narrative structure of the story, not arguing with that. But I feel like from a purely character arc standpoint, the actual battle is Killmonger vs Nakia, and she obliterates him.
Erik Stevens is a CIA covert operative; basically, heâs a spy. So is Nakia. And when you look at their various actions through the lens of âwho accomplished their mission better?â, it becomes pretty clear that Erik spent 20-some years preparing to destabilize TâChallaâs reign, including having inside knowledge and a birthright on his sideâŠand Nakia spent roughly 36 hours successfully destabilizing his reign, in turn, with nothing but her incredible ability to network disparate resources.
Letâs just review her actions over those 36 hours okay:
- Gets the surviving members of the royal family successfully out of danger within seconds of the coup (aka the only living people with a competing blood claim to the throne aka the greatest threat to his regime)
- Sows enough doubt in the âgreatest warrior in the countryâ about Killmongerâs ability to lead that when the time comes, Okoye and the entire Dora Milaje all defect (eventually saving hundreds of lives)
- Steals a heart-shaped herb from under his nose as heâs identifying it as the most important power resource in the country and trying to prevent it falling into anyone elseâs hands, lol too late buddy
- Immediately identifies the person in the country with the best platform to mount a counter-insurgency (MâBaku), identifies what it will take to get him on their side, and casually resolves a centuries-long division in their country while sheâs at it
- Correctly predicts Killmongerâs opening move of distributing vibranium to the war dogs, and assists in a comprehensive strategy that shuts it down coldâa strategy they wouldnât have been able to use if she hadnât gotten Shuri, Ross, and TâChalla all in one place with the right information at the right time
As soon as TâChalla is back she takes an immediate backseat again (she said it herself, sheâs a spy, not the leader of an army), but, seriously, if you have to pinpoint the one person who took down Killmonger, itâs undeniably her. And she did it by clearly demonstrating that her skills as a war dog are miles ahead of his as a CIA agent (due in part, Iâm sure, to being trained in a superior country, but also sheâs Just That Good).
Yes! Erikâs real misfortune was coming up against a much better and smarter intelligence operative. She also gives the lie to the stereotypical spy narrative (embodied by Erik) that you have to be heartless and violent to achieve your ends. She is the moral center and touchstone of film, so filled with goodness it comes off her like a glow, but she kicks the ruthless Erikâs ass from Wakanda to Kinshasa.
Another thing Nakia was good at was identifying where the necessary resources werenât, namely in herself. That was why she argued Ramonda out of the idea of taking it herself. It wasnât self-effacement or modesty, it was a clear-eyed calculation of what it would take to win and the best chance was with M'Baku, not her.
And she did much of this while she thought the man she still loved was dead. She admits as much to Okoye, too. Think of how much sheer fortitude that took, to work through a grief like that to save your country. She is a hero and her heroism is no less amazing for not being flashy or center stage.
Itâs also interesting and important to point out that, in moral views, sheâs also a counter to Erik Killmonger. They contrast & compliment each other and are very much set up to be mirrors of the same cause. Killmonger believed in Wakanda using its vast & superior resources to liberate oppressed folk around the globe. He hated that a near utopian society existed while so many of their people and ancestors were left to suffer. This is what, in part, made Killmonger such a sympathetic villain. His means were wrong, but his ideas? He had the right ideasâŠ.Wâkabi thought so too, thus why he took Killmongerâs side. It took Killmongerâs insurrection for Tâchalla to learn that lesson as well.
But it was a message Nakia had been preaching all along.
Letâs not forget that it was Nakia that first proposed the idea of ending Wakandaâs isolation. She refused to become a queen, she chose to remain a spy, because morally she couldnât stand by while so many others suffered. In essence, Nakia and Killmonger mirrored each other in moral standing when it came to Wakanda needing to reach out and help their people. However, where Killmonger decided to kill relentlessly and take the throne, then find the solution in arming the oppressed to overthrow nations, Nakia valued life above all.Â
And you can say âKillmonger was right bc in the end, Tâchalla listened to him.â But did he listen to Killmonger, or did he finally listen to Nakia?
Some food for thought.

Hi, Tumblr. After many years and drafts, Iâm finally publishing a book. I canât wait for you to read ANGER IS A GIFT

STOP CALLING THE ASSAULTS ON THE HUMANITY OF POC AND LGBTQ PEOPLE âDISTRACTIONSâ.
When you call attacks on LGBTQ people, on Black/Brown people âdistractionsâ youâre saying âdonât pay attention to thatâ.
Donât fucking tell us that weâre âworried about the wrong thingâ. ALL of it is important. ALL of it feeds into the bigger picture.

Me: *whispers* I loved her.
ok so letâs talk a bit about jobs vs passion. my last fulltime job was at a big game development studio; the kind of job youâre (supposedly) passionate about. most of my colleagues adored the games we made, and so they didnât care that the company had a major diversity problem, that our salaries were below average, that we didnât get overtime compensation yet stayed âtil 11PM more often than whatâs healthy, and that the company promoted an unhealthy alcohol culture. because we were passionate. this was the kind of job you grow up dreaming about; donât go throwing it away because some colleagues are harrassing you or because you get no recognition for your efforts!
for more than a year I was tired. stressed. in constant pain. my anxiety was through the roof. I worked on these âdream projectsâ and I felt dead inside.
when I quit that job I started freelancing as a writer. I got some really good jobs. I also got a bunch of small-time, low-paid, âhey at least your name is on it so isnât it enough to pay 10$ for this text?â kind of jobs.
with the typical millenial housing situation of an apartment that I could barely afford on a fulltime pay and a constant stream of job offers that were underpaid I spent four months doing what I love, while constantly overwhelmed by stress. my insomnia got really bad, and when I managed to fall asleep I would dream about my bank balance. I would dream of losing whatever stability I had left in my life, simply because I couldnât afford a ânormal adult lifeâ.
and so, today I got a job. itâs a fairly standard QA job at a medium sized game development studio. unlike any other game companies Iâve been at they offer humane working conditions. they donât expect me to show up too early and stay too late because Iâm passionate. the hours are nine to five, and they disapprove of overtime. the pay is slightly above average, and I get health benefits. Iâve been through several interviews, and at no point has someone tried to belittle my career or tried to convince me to work for less than Iâm worth.
for the first time in many years of my career, Iâm happy. Iâm at ease. I applied for this job because I wanted to get away from the passionate part of the industry. I wanted a job where I could go home at five and dedicate my freetime to my own writing projects. I wanted to work at a place that didnât eat my heart and soul and energy as I contributed to projects that wouldnât even bear my name in the end credits.
so what Iâm trying to say is that thereâs nothing wrong with having a ânormalâ job. youâre not giving up on your dreams if you take a job outside your main interests. if it offers stability in your life, itâs enough.
This really resonates with me because I left the architectural industry last year. The hours were unreasonable, work stressful and devolved into the new projects filling me with dread. My boss kept hinting I wasnât doing enough, I wasnât passionate enough⊠I finally left, and after a difficult half year, I finally found a job outside the industry. It is not a dream job, and it is not where my passion lies, but the work lets breathe. And I tell you, I now value âbreathingâ over âmaking my dream come trueâ any day.
if you have a job that you can do reasonably well without intense stress and leave at the office when you leave, you can actually spend as much free time as you like Making Your Dream Happen like, yeah, you can settle down in a cafe on sundays and write your novel, because you have that time carved out and you can afford it. you can put extra money towards materials for your sculpting project. save up for a kiln or fancy paints or whatever. get a gopro and convince your friends to act in your arthouse zombie movie on the weekend because itâll be fun. dreams can be dreamed on many levels. jobs only have to be successful on one level, and that is the level where you make enough money to live your goddamn life.
Work to live, donât live to work.
To all my followers who want to write, animate, and create - this is very real and true! Please take note!!
Academia is really bad about this. âPassionateâ is conflated with âwilling to work 60-70 hours/week, move anywhere in the country for a new job once a year, live apart from your significant other for years at a time, put your family life on hold, etc etc.â If youâre not willing to do all that, you just donât want it badly enough. Fuck that. Fuck any employer who thinks that way.
âWhat is the biggest way in which each of you kind of differs from your character?â
