It's frustrating being a smart person with "dumb" hobbies. Why am I out here watching sitcoms and then getting upset that other people dont agree with my takes.
People criticizing Donkey Kong 64 for having "backtracking" drives me absolutely insane. It's not a linear game with hallways intended on being walked through once! They're big open levels, it's called EXPLORATION!! So many people will wax poetic about how fun it is to fight the same boss 100 times in Dark Souls or Hollow Knight to "memorize the pattern", but then fall apart at the concept of remembering you saw a purple banana somewhere so you can go back and grab it later.
Personally I like the idea of combing through each level a few times and finding new stuff to do each visit. Banjo Kazooie is fun, but once you've run through an area once, you're done.
I noticed that people don't like to have discussions anymore a while ago, but I'm realizing now how much people go out of their way to shut any possibility of a discussion down. So often someone will bring something up, and immediately people will rush in to say "maybe they're behaving like that because they're autistic/adhd/depressed" or "this isn't a problem because people have always done X/Y/Z and this is no different" or "this is obviously bait".
It's an intentional effort to stop a conversation completely in it's tracks if anyone dares to open up a discussion, expand their knowledge, or do anything other than express vague positivity. Idk where this came from but it's annoying as hell.
People will make fun of shoujo for having weak main characters who act like door mats, but then when someone writes a complex, relatable, morally gray main character, everyone complains that she's annoying and difficult to like!
I hate how everything has to be cinematic these days. Like yeah the new Ratchet and Clank looks amazing and full of all this dynamic action and interesting set pieces, but it's not fun to PLAY. I can't see where the enemies are because there's so much stuff on the screen that they blend right in. I can't take five seconds to stop and look around for secrets because the narrative is pushing me forward and will give me hints on what to do next if I'm not constantly moving (this is an issue in Metroid Prime 4, too, with the added annoyance of little creatures that hurt you if you stand still for too long!!) . It feels like everyone in AAA studios today really really really want to be making movies but are stuck making video games instead.
Really annoying how if a game is made by an outside studio like Pokemon or Metroid, if the game is good people will credit the studio that made it, but if it's bad they'll blame Nintendo.
It's giving "everything good that happens is god's grace but everything bad that happens is because of the devil".
I don't really care about Meghan Trainor's weight but why is miss girly pop out here releasing a song called "I don't care" taking aim at people who have been critical of her new appearance. No one forced you to write a song saying you'll never be a "silicone barbie doll" and then use ozempic and get plastic surgery, ma'am. Some people will in fact become upset when you tell them "actually you're not perfect the way you are, psych! Being skinny and hot is the best and you should grab the opportunity the second it becomes medically possible!"
My Spotify wrapped shows my top 5 songs are all from Skyrim...I am embarrassed
Day 1 of Kirby Air Riders and people are already putting out insanely creative machines.
I hope the Kirby Air Riders devs know and understand that City Trial is the best part of the original and that they really expand on it. I'd love different maps, more events, more scenanigans, and more music.
They failed the assignment pretty badly.
Found an airline safety briefing video I collaborated on 10 years ago. It’s so great seeing many of these memes again, a few are no longer with us. I don’t think anybody has seen this video in over a decade. RIP Double Rainbow Guy, Doge and Keyboard Cat ❤️
About halfway through the first spring so far in Harvest Moon Home Sweet Home and really having fun. It definitely feels like a mobile game but that's okay, the gameplay loop is solid so far. Natsume is the reigning king of keeping you occupied with little tasks. There's always just a little too much to do in a day, you always come up a little bit short with how much stamina you need, so it makes you want to play just one more day to get those quests done or get that upgrade. They are honing their craft! We love to see it.
Oh no, Once Upon a Katamari is terrible :( Pop ups interrupting everything you do every 5 seconds, the entire screen is completely cluttered with UI and the King never ever stops talking so his speech bubble is just blocking everything in the middle of the screen the entire time, controlling the katamari is sluggish and it's incredibly easy to get stuck on things, and the level design is somehow super cluttered and yet devoid of anything you can actually pick up at the same time???? I have no idea how this got a 9/10. Very disappointing.
Utah transportation: “ Good news we could all use: the Parley's Wildlife Overpass is working.”
Thanks Blake Ledbetter (@blakethy) and @usuaggielife for leading the study.
Father Moose - Let's cross the highway here. There's no cars in sight and we'll save 10 minutes getting to your Mother's home. Mother Moose - Don't you dare! We're going to that new overpass and I don't want to hear any more about it!
I saw a YouTube video that was waxing poetic about why the roguelike genre blends so well with so many other genres, and I wanted to scream. It's because games are fun to start over. That's all "roguelike" means these days, starting over repeatedly from the beginning with a blank or mostly blank slate. We've known games are fun to start over from their inception, it's why people flocked to arcades. I think we forgot at some point that a game doesn't have to be a 100 hour slog. It's often more fun to start up a game and spend a short amount of time trying to get as far as possible rather than trying to juggle a million game mechanics and a complex story and thousands of items in your head every time you want to sit down and play a game. And the randomization just ensures that the experience is fresh every time, it's a shortcut to having to design a ton of variety.
That's it. That's why it "works with every genre", because the modern definition of roguelike isn't a genre at all, it's just a natural aspect of gaming.
