Today my mom had one of her tantrums. I just spent the weekend with my boyfriend so I was feeling strong and confident and I actually stood up for myself. I told her very firmly “If you need to say anything to me you can say it now but I’m going to sleep and I need you to stay out of my space when I close the door” ( she has deliberately removed the lock to my door) She got furious and charged at me, repeating my words mockingly. I became very small and scared and immediately started to flashback but I still managed to say “I’m closing this door and it is staying closed” and the weird thing is... it worked? Like my strategy most of my life has been to make myself as small and unnoticeable as possible to avoid her wrath, and yes I understand my need for that when I was actually small and helpless but I am not now. I am a reasonable and self-sufficient adult and as much as she doesn’t want to let that be the truth, it is. As emotionally difficult and terrifying as that was, I did the right thing by standing up for myself. I’m not the person who will just lay down and take the abuse anymore and that scares her, let it keep scaring her. I’m only going to get stronger.
