Film Review: The Fault In Our Stars

And then there are books…you can’t tell people about, books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like betrayal”
Like a few other books, TV shows and Films The Fault in Our Stars is one that left a mark. Like with everyone else who reads it, it stuck in my mind, got under my skin and after finishing it left me in a state of uncomfortable agitation. This is how i knew it was something special, something that I wanted to keep all to myself, yet felt everyone should read.
It might seem surprising then that I wasn’t worried about the film adaptation, the writers could have completely ruined Hazel and Gus’ story but it wouldn’t matter because the book existed and that was enough. Thats not too say i didn’t want the film to be good, I did and about 8 minutes into the film I realised this one one adaptation that could stand aside the book with pride, it was a truly exceptional adaptation and film.
Firstly the film was so well cast, it became almost unbearable to watch at points because Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as Gus performed with such emotion and honesty it felt real. It’s films like this that an actors ability is tested and they did not fail. It would also be criminal not to mention Nat Wolff, because he performed Isaac with a comedic flare that was much needed in a emotionally heavy film.
The real beauty of The Fault In Our Stars though, comes in the writing. The book is full of quotes that you remember and John Green’s words are quite rightly taken straight from the page to the screen.
Yes, this film is sad, tragically so (I haven’t cried that much since Titanic). But its also funny, honest, witty, intelligent and beautiful. A Must Watch.
