Film Review: The Fault In Our Stars
“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book. And then there are books…you can’t tell people about, books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like betrayal”
Like a few other books, TV shows and Films The Fault in Our Stars is one that left a mark. Like with everyone else who reads it, it stuck in my mind, got under my skin and after finishing it left me in a state of uncomfortable agitation. This is how i knew it was something special, something that I wanted to keep all to myself, yet felt everyone should read.
It might seem surprising then that I wasn’t worried about the film adaptation, the writers could have completely ruined Hazel and Gus’ story but it wouldn’t matter because the book existed and that was enough. Thats not too say i didn’t want the film to be good, I did and about 8 minutes into the film I realised this one one adaptation that could stand aside the book with pride, it was a truly exceptional adaptation and film.
Firstly the film was so well cast, it became almost unbearable to watch at points because Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as Gus performed with such emotion and honesty it felt real. It’s films like this that an actors ability is tested and they did not fail. It would also be criminal not to mention Nat Wolff, because he performed Isaac with a comedic flare that was much needed in a emotionally heavy film.
The real beauty of The Fault In Our Stars though, comes in the writing. The book is full of quotes that you remember and John Green’s words are quite rightly taken straight from the page to the screen.
Yes, this film is sad, tragically so (I haven’t cried that much since Titanic). But its also funny, honest, witty, intelligent and beautiful. A Must Watch.

Prey Episode 1 Review
You don’t stab a man with a pen when he’s down.
Spoilers ahead….
Trailer Here
Episode one of Prey takes place over 3 days and what a 3 days it is, DS Marcus Farrow (John Simm) experiences just about the worst things that can happen to a person. The amount of injuries he obtains is enough for anyone to give up, but the emotional turmoil of finding your ex wife murdered, then to be accused of it, is brutal. So after getting stabbed with a pen and being in a pretty bad car accident, Marcus Farrow escapes to clear his name by finding out who killed his family. On top of this his so-called best mate is clearly connected to the murders and the investigating officer on the case Susan Reinhart (Rosie Cavaliero), has decided Farrow did it end of. She also has lot going on personally, like stalking her ex and eating her feelings; did anyone else pick up on this- they defiantly made a point that the character was eating a lot right?
If you haven’t caught on already Prey is an intense and frustrating watch. That’s not to say it’s not good, it’s very good, great even, but while I was hooked to the screen it is difficult to watch at times. But I suppose that’s the point of this new ITV drama, all the best British thrillers and dramas aren’t exactly a cakewalk.
A defiant strength to come out of episode one is the acting, particularly from John Simm, who encapsulates the unpredictable, likeable and short-tempered police officer persona. The heart-breaking scene when Farrow comes to learn his son has been killed is a defiant stand out but this will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with John Simms work, he is very good.
Preys first episode was a strong, punch you in the gut, how much can one man take start to the series. At just 3 episodes it feels like there’s something here, the hunt is very much on and with both DS Marcus Farrow and Susan Reinhart showing no signs of slowing down the finale 2 episodes are sure to please.
Film Review: Divergent
I’m going to start this review by saying I am a huge fan of the Divergent series, I loved everything about them from Veronica Roth’s writing style to the characters and the narrative, I was even content with the ending (granted it took a day or two). I’ve been waiting for Divergent’s release since filming began and when you genuinely care about a story, it makes it difficult not to have high expectations that perhaps aren’t even reachable. I’m also conscious my opinion on the film was always going to be bias and after reading a few reviews (both negative and positive), I decided to go in with as clear a perspective as possible.
So as the film began I was praying they didn’t make a mess of it and although high expectations lingered within me, I felt myself relaxing more throughout the film as I realised it was good. I can’t speak for people who haven’t read the books but in my opinion it was dealt with exceptionally well. Now, I’m not one of these people who would lose my shit if a line is said differently or the set didn’t look how it should have. I’ve always appreciated that books and film are two very different medium’s, transferring certain aspects of the book into film would not of worked. So I think they did an exceptional job in transforming Veronica Roth’s world onto the big screen.
The strongest part of Divergent is defiantly the acting; Shailene Woodley performs Tris with this perfect mix of confidence and vulnerability. Theo James as four was something I was cynical of at first but he pretty much had me sold as soon as he spoke. I also loved that Mile Teller was cast as Peter, such a great choice. My biggest issue with the film was the soundtrack, something that may just be my personal taste but the music used felt tacky at times, I would argue some of the songs were just too much pop for a dystopian future, it made me internally cringe and threatened to spoil scenes for me (if the acting wasn’t so good).
I hope that anyone who sees Divergent will absolutely read the books because they are addictive, well written, raise all sorts of questions regarding human nature and despite their marketing demographic not just for teenagers (I hope, i’m in my 20’s).
Overall i sigh in relief that for me Divergent is a great film and I’m genuinely excited about seeing how they approach the next two books
Side Note:
The horror of shared Bathrooms with no separate cubicles. I think we can all agree no one went for a poo the whole time they were there.
Gutted they didn’t show Edward getting stabbed in the eye. Also which one was Edward?
I’m glad they cast older actors, I don’t think younger actors would have made it as believable and i refuse to fan girl over anyone younger than me.
Shout out to this guy, who was he supposed to be? he kept popping up like he got lost on his way to amity
I liked that this film had subtle humour and Tris was quite sarcastic
Gutted about Will but i think they dealt with that very well in the film
I feel like i would defiantly choose Dauntless and defiantly end up factionless.
I wish at some point or another Tris said: “I’m Divergent Bitch” like how you would imagine Jesse Pinkman would say it.
Television Shows Everyone Should Know about
4. Broad City.
4 and 3 and 2 and 1
Broad City is hands down the best television comedy I have watched in a long time. It follows 20 something best friends Ilana (Ilana Glazer) and Abbi (Abbi Jacobson) as they go about their lives in New York City. The two leads actually created the show and its brilliantly written. What works best is that it's completely relatable to 20 something's everywhere, but is also hilarious and absurd at the same time.
To prove my point heres a video expressing how everyone feels when they cash any amount of money into the bank

Veronica Mars Film Review:
A long time ago we used to be friends…and it turns out your still awesome.
I have to admit that when it was announced that Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell were using a kick-starter campaign to fund the Veronica Mars Movie I didn’t so much as blink, I had never watched Veronica Mars and had no intention too. That was until a friend of mine insisted I make time to watch the series, partly because she knew I’d enjoy it and partly because she wanted someone to watch the movie with. Nonetheless we have the same taste in TV so I trusted her enough to give it a go.
I wasn’t gripped immediately, but that’s not unusual, I didn’t come to love most of my favourite shows right away and a lot of the time when a show starts out strong, it loses its genius half way through (Heroes anyone?).
But the first thing I did come to love was Veronica, I found myself wishing I had watched this show years earlier when I was a teenager. Veronica is the girl you look up too, the girl who doesn’t take any shit and the girl who always has the perfect comeback that you’d want to say but never would. It was this character that made me feel like the show actually had meaning, it has left a mark, a bit like Buffy did. Honestly Kristen Bell is great in the role and the show is so well written I could go on about it for pages…
So moving on to the film, it is exactly what all the V Mars fans asked for, it’s a movie for them. The quick one-liners are back, the chemistry between Logan and Veronica is on fine form, Veronica and her Dad are as amazing as ever and the return of supporting characters such as Dick and Leo D’Amato (Schmidt) made me smile like a 14-year-old girl. Although I’m sure most Veronica Mars fans have already seen this film I don’t want to give too much away, revisiting the plot won’t give it justice. But I will say this, if you haven’t watched Veronica Mars, give it a go. The film seems like a nice introduction to the series, but I don’t think anyone will understand the level of awesomeness that film has if they haven’t seen the series first. So if you like a lead heroine, murder mystery, drama and comedy watch Veronica Mars.
Side Note:
1. The celeb cameos were wonderful, James Franco trying on skinny jeans was pure genius.
2. Quote of the film: "Oh that's right, we were shooting some of our usual leg erotica."
