I’ve been reading about Chinese ghosts and spirits today and it is honestly a miracle that Wei Wuxian did not end up as a vengeful spirit. Like, there are so many different ways that someone could become a vengeful ghost in his particular setting: improper burial? check. Absorption of too much of one kind of energy over another? check. Rage against moral injustice? check. Violent death? check.
Like, no wonder people are still talking about him thirteen years later. No wonder people still sell talismans to ward off his ghost. No wonder he’s a bogeyman story. Because he should have been. He absolutely should have been causing malicious havoc somewhere. And then I think about Lan Wangji during that time, and I just…. that’s what he expected, isn’t it? He expected to find Wei Wuxian among the restless, angry dead, and he expected to be the one to try to pacify him. But it’s never Wei Wuxian. For thirteen years he investigates rumors of chaos and destruction and it’s never Wei Wuxian.
And then it turns out Wei Wuxian wasn’t a vengeful spirit at all. He’s not even possessing Mo Xuanyu. He was invited, and his spirit is whole, and not corrupted, so long as he can fulfill this binding wish of destroying an enemy he can’t readily identify.
How much relief must he have felt, at that chance? At knowing that this fear he’s carried with him for over a decade is something he can set down, and maybe even something he never needed to worry about at all? How much of his faith in Wei Wuxian’s spirit and intentions must have been restored.
Idk, I just can’t stop thinking about this. About how close they were to not just “Wei Wuxian is dead” but to “Lan Wangji meets Wei Wuxian on a night hunt” under the absolute worst of circumstances.
lots of good stuff in the notes but I wanted to add: is it any wonder that Lan Wangji devoted himself so wholly to the search for Wei Wuxian’s ghost, for any hint of anything that might be Wei Wuxian’s ghost? Not just for his own sake, missing the man that he loves, but for Wei Wuxian’s sake too.
The Lan cultivators are said (early in the Gusu arc) to be the only sect that emphasizes liberation of the spirit over suppression and elimination, because they still care for the welfare of the spirit after death where other sects are more interested in dealing with the trouble the spirit is causing to the living.
Wei Wuxian is so infamous, Lan Wangji knows full well that if any other cultivator encounters his spirit – even another Lan cultivator, most likely – they won’t hesitate to destroy it utterly. The only cultivator still alive in the world that cares enough about Wei Wuxian to bring peace to his spirit and ease him on to the next life is Lan Wangji.
If Lan Wangji isn’t able to find and heal his spirit, nobody will.
“Mu Qing’s departure had really shocked him to the core.
First, he had never thought that someone so close would just up and leave. Second, Xie Lian had always believed in “forever”. For example, friends would always be friends forever; no betrayal, no deception, no breaking up. Perhaps there’d be times when they’d part, but it for sure wouldn’t be over reasons like “life is too horrible”.
It was like how in stories, the hero and the beauty were a match made in heaven, and so they should never part, remaining true to each other forever and ever. If they couldn’t, it must be because they were forced apart by a tragic death, not because the hero preferred to eat meat while the beauty preferred to eat fish, or because the hero scorned the beauty for spending too lavishly and the beauty scorned the hero for his bad habits.”
shut up shut up shut up the fact that mu qing leaving is compared to a love story not working out for entirely mundane reasons im so unwell
lan xichen, mid-backstory: and then our mother straight-up murdered someone
wei wuxian: wtf why??????
lan xichen: idk :) anyway continuing on

I think that when wei wuxian goes to lotus pier and is able to actually yknow walk around and take it all in for the first time post resurrection he'd be like "ah jiang cheng you've done such a wonderful job as sect leader! your gege is very proud of you" in a fun silly playful way expecting jiang cheng to get embarrassed and grumpy about it and hit him on the shoulder or something but then after a few minutes of complete silence wei wuxian looks over and jiang cheng is just standing there lookin at him w big teary eyes
i think the funniest thing is how they introduce wen ruohan to be the big bad and he just like. dies instantly.
and by funny i think it’s AMAZING to then shift from the almost fantastical evil of wen ruohan to the very realistic terror of power corruptly concentrated in the hands of jin guangshan
