Happy Birthday Paul McCartney

paul mccartney is truly unbelievable as a human being like he comes to the sessions with the long and winding road and oh darling at once and then says some bullshit about how he makes up feelings to write songs
guy who's doing ok with his platonic partnership ending 👍
When I'm Sixty Eighty-Four 🎶⭐🎸
remember when jim mccartney cried when paul was born because he looked so ugly
honestly might be one of my favorite bits of beatles history
He looked awful. I couldn’t get over it. Horrible. He had one eye open, and he just squawked all the time. They held him up and he looked like a piece of red meat. When I got home I cried, the first time for years and years.
But the next day, he looked more human. He turned out a lovely baby in the end.
imagine going many years without crying over something bad and then ur wife gives birth to paul mccartney
he was hated
John and Paul loved to sing “Baby’s in Black” together, sharing a microphone onstage, but not “Yes It Is,” which came a few months later and got released as the B-side of “Ticket to Ride.” “Baby’s in Black” was one of the many songs they wrote on tour in hotels, eyeball to eyeball, singing into each other’s mouths. Something “Baby’s in Black” and “Yes It Is” have in common: neither one is a boy singing alone. These are harmony ballads, untranslatable to a solo voice. They’re songs about saying no to life, no to the future, yet they don’t begin until the singers say yes to each other. – Rob Sheffield, Dreaming the Beatles
oh you’re a beatles fan? name 5 of john lennon’s biggest insecurities
Happy birthday to Jim McCartney's beloved red piece of meat, Donovan's beautiful two-headed monster, Martha the dog's adored owner, Yoko Ono's great threat. Happy Birthday to Mike McCartney's tender older brother, George Harrison's older brother by nine whole months and the baby brother Ringo's Starr always wanted. Happy birthday to one of the only men Bob Dylan considered a threat, Stevie Wonder's friend, Brian Wilson's admirer, the man who Derek Taylor briefly hated more than anybody else and the person who sent Dusty Springfield flowers in her time of need. Happy birthday to the guiding light in Stella McCartney's life, the man who fought a ram to defend his children and the man who let kids play with knives to teach them life skills. Happy birthday to the man who feels love so much that it comes out in all body tingles, who sees stonehenge as the heart chakra of the earth and who just really really likes buses. Happy birthday to the 1960s pin-up, the indie rock forerunner, the flop movie maker, the writer, the 1980s chew toy, the vegetarian advocate, the protester and the council lad from Liverpool who changed music forever.
Happy birthday to Linda McCartney's prince charming, John Lennon's extraordinary dear one. Happy birthday to today's Mozart, Yesterday's creator and everyones grandude.
Happy birthday to the Gemini who isn't just a Gemini, but a whole constellation.
Happy birthday Paul McCartney.
fell into a riverdale rabbit hole today. here are some of my favorite plot lines
In one of your posts about Pipeline you mentioned Paul's pathological people pleasing. Why do you think he was people pleaser? TBH, i don't see him as such - people pleaser is someone who puts others' interest and wishes before his own, and is it really can be said about Paul McCartney? I don't know much about his relationship with Heather Mills, other than remembering how viciously she was threated by media during their divorce, but he definitely didn't live to please John, that's for sure. There are plenty of examples of him fighting for his own interests and not taking shit from John and others. I really don't get where this image of people pleasing victimized poor little meow meow Paul comes from.
I think we're just working with different operational definitions of "people-pleasing" - which is fine, and mine does involve a bit of nuance and finagling, so I totally get it if you still disagree when I've offered an explanation.
The way in which I perceive Paul as a people-pleaser is that he wants - needs, perhaps - to be The Best Boy, to the point where it's rather... obsessive. Pathological, even. Paul stands up for himself and has an ego and is an incorrigible bossyboots in many ways - but it also ultimately bothers him profoundly if people Dislike him or he's left a truly negative impression. He Cares. Deeply. And a lot of the reason he does is because he really enjoys and thrives on the adulation that being Good and Liked brings. I think there's also a certain degree of the fear and insecurity that drives a lot of the more garden-variety people-pleasers - which you might view as more of the "poor little meow-meow" type - but it's also that Paul, like. Gets Off on this, lmao. Ultimately, this often means that Paul will take a conciliatory/diplomatic role or - as he has worked out through his decades of fame and fortune - at the very least a more pleasant way to be The Boss. This is something he's fine-tuned over the years, and he certainly went through periods of being less pleasant about it, but you can see it from early on. So what I'm thinking of here - and, to be clear, I don't fault you at all for getting this impression just from the phrase "people-pleaser" - is not so much a doormat, nor is it the weird manipulative psychopath that sometimes shows up in Beatles biographies, but like.... someone who wants their way but also wants you to like him, ultimately, and he's going to try to work out a way to have both. And sometimes he can't, like when Phil Collins takes something the wrong way and Paul rings him up to apologize and that pisses Phil Collins off even more.
Does any of that make sense? It's totally understandable if it doesn't, lmao. I'm happy to try and do a better job of clarifying!
Also hoo boy. The HM saga really is something. I agree that the tabloids were appalling to her, but there is a Lot to unpack there, and I don't even know where to start, lol.
If I was talking about someone who was generous and selfless to a fault I wouldn’t use the term “people-pleaser”.
It describes the way Paul insists on choosing the songs for his shows based on what he reckons the audience want to hear. “We might want to do a new one, but it’s just a black hole, no one is holding up their phones” <- paraphrasing
It’s the way he’s trying to manufacture consensus in Get Back and actually just pissing everyone off (especially George, who wants Paul to be himself, but Paul doesn’t really know what that means).
It’s Paul not being able to resist the marketing guys’ ideas as a solo artist (see McCartney Legacy vol ii).
this might be overanalysing but —
wrt his relationship with John etc: I’d actually say one of the faults of a people-pleaser is that they will put the needs of nearby strangers who are perceiving them over the needs of people who are close enough to be somewhat integrated into the self. eg pushing the other Beatles to work, or letting girls gather outside his house even though they’re being viscous to his wife and child.
Watching Paul in Get Back helped me to understand why my people pleasing was actually disrespectful to the people I was trying to please (as well as destructive to me), but it’s not an obvious logic to pick apart, and it’s not an easy mental habit to dismantle.
Hey remember when Paul released a song that directly mentioned a secret code, and then an audio clip where he explicitly connected that lyric with John Lennon, and then that audio clip was being promoted everywhere for a couple of weeks, and then in all the press he's done since no-one asked him any followup questions?
That was wild.
