“Maybe they come back to prove those people wrong,” she suggested.

“Yeah,” he agreed, fidgeting with the edges of his gloves because he really just wanted to reach into his quills for that bit of paper, that photo, but was it really the right time? Was this really his moment?

“Are they your favorite type of star?” Maddie asked, seemingly happy to let their farce of a conversation keep going, if she did know that was what it was.

There was only one star that was his favorite.

“Well, my favorite star does happen to be a White Dwarf,” he said.»

«“Are you upset at him?” Sonic asked.

She laughed wetly. “I’m not sure, at this point, to be honest. It’s… difficult to be mad at someone when you’ve been told they died in such a brutal way.”

“That was what it was like when I got back, for weeks,” he admitted.

Mercifully, Maddie didn’t push. Really, it seemed as though she only had one more question.

“Then what about you, Sonic? Do you really think Shadow’s dead?”

He looked up at the ceiling through Maddie’s arms and pictured an entire night sky’s worth of stars. Even if there was only one up there that it really comforted him to imagine.

“He’s a White Dwarf,” simply, Sonic answered.»

“Nebula,” curtly, Shadow decided. “I think you’re a nebula.”

“Nebula?” he blinked. “That’s a little… loose for me, isn’t it? I mean, it’s kinda vague… That could mean a lot of things!”

“You’re the one who said you didn’t know what you were,” Shadow argued, words pointed like the sharp edges of a star’s image.

“I mean, yeah, but…” he didn’t really know what to fight that with.»
