Oh the difference FIVE years can make... 5 years ago today I was still living with my parents. 5 years ago today I was terrified of being myself. 5 years ago today I was in the middle of the #selfieloveproject trying to convince myself that it was okay to love myself. 5 years ago today I never could have pictured how happy and confident I would be at 30. 5 years ago today saying the phrase “I’m gay.” Was one of the most terrifying things in the world. Now I have to meet a daily quota of how many times I reference my gayness or I might die. 🤣 It has been an eye opening and amazing 5 years. I have grown and learned so much about myself and the world. I am living in a city I love. I have the love and support of my first family and an incredible found family. I am so very lucky and blessed to be privileged enough to be out and proud. To live my life the way I want and to be supported by those I love and those I have worked for! But I also recognize my privilege for what it is. I have a job that pays me well and that I was able to keep during this pandemic, I have an apartment, I have health insurance, I have access to good physical and mental health care, and I have parents that can and will help if I ever need it and most importantly I am a average sized cisgender WHITE woman. So many members of my #LGBTQ+ family don’t have any of these advantages. 40% of all homeless youth in America are LGBTQ+. Until TWO WEEKS ago in most states it was perfectly legal to fire someone for being LGBTQ+. We have only been legally allowed to get married for 5 years and it looks like the Trump administration wants to take THAT away from us (regardless of whether they can they clearly want to...) Conversion Therapy is STILL A THING in many states. And it gets even worse for POC and Black LGBTQ+ people. Black and POC LGBTQ+ people face much high rates of discrimination and hate crimes and are already at a disadvantage in this country purely because of the color of their skin. Black and POC Trans women are being murdered at an alarming rate. I’m very concerned with how quickly social media and the news media has gone quiet about the #BlackLivesMatter. When I put this shirt on this morning, I didn’t realize how significant it would be. I’m not really sure how to feel. New York’s primaries are in April, and I’m devastated I didn’t at least get to vote for her.
