Any art tips for a fellow artist? Maybe some things on how your style works? I'm a big fan of it (your art style) and I love scrolling through it, even if I've already seen it a million times.
I’m by no means a teacher but I can give some tips! They’re mostly going to be about emotion and hair since I had another ask asking about those!
1. Faces
Different people have different facial features: larger/smaller jaw lines, narrow/large nose, how the eyes are slanted or how big they are. So an easy way to have to people look different from one another is to give them different facial structures!
It can give a lot of personality and diversity to a character design!
2. Hair
So for that one ask asking about hair, I have a system to drawing a hair style which is: hairline/bangs, any hair at the sides, the outer layer of hair, and then details like facial hair or texture lines.
Hair has weight to it, so when someone has straight hair, I draw it like its a drape, it bends to whatever it is laying on. For curly hair, I try to show a lot of volume with it, since it’s majority air.
For most tho, I try to keep it relatively simple, since I just think it looks nicer that way; less lines gives it a simpler, more cartoony look.
3. Emotions
When doing an expression, every aspect of the face comes into play: eyebrows, mouth, teeth, wrinkles, the eyes, and even the pupils.
Just adding little details: dilated pupils, a wrinkle where the mouth curls up, emanata (fancy word for symbols that emanate outwards from characters to show their internal state), you can convey more emotion!
A combo of multiple of these things will allow you to covey a whole range of emotions in various degrees. The more exaggerated these features are, the easier it will be for your viewer to see exactly what your characters inner thoughts are.
Another thing I sometimes do is leave out a facial feature entirely, like the mouth or eyes.
I do this when I want to show an extreme emotion.
And that’s all the tips I have! Hope this helps and thanks for the ask!
Just in case you forget this exists.
It exists.
With those “when you want to design a character but you don’t know color theory” posts flying around I thought this would be relevant again.
SLAMs THE REBLOG BUTTON
there’s also Coolors website that gives you randomized palettes!
Don’t forget ColourLovers, either! It’s a social media-esque site where you can browse tons of palettes and share your own.
You can browse the most popular ones or search for certain colors, themes, and even specific hex codes!
When you find one you like, you can download a wallpaper swatch of it and also select the specific colors it uses to look at more palettes that use those same ones.
ColourLovers is my go-to for when I’m having trouble coming up with a color scheme! It’s also been around for over a decade, so there’s plenty to browse through.

Words used to describe hair
Dear Mog how do you draw burns? (I also love your blog and art)
i stink at tutorials asfhgbguh i’ll try (but thank you!)
Well, burns can vary a lot ((some have soft edges, some look almost a pepperoni slice in your skin in real life)) but usually, i use a soft pen or marker brush to make red splotches, then a soft edged eraser that doesn’t have its opacity all the way up, to erase smaller areas that can eventually become blisters. if the burn is even worse, i deepen the red and increase the amount of space around the burn, and define the boils a bit as well as warp the texture of the skin. depending on how gruesome i want it to look, sometimes i add blood/fluid weeping from the edges of a particularly bad burn ot blisters that have burst.now, the character i drawn burned the most often is Jaren, whose burns are a result of a supernatural means, so if it’s his burns specifically you’re curious about, the next step is layers of char, and dark vein-like markings, and spots along those markings where the skin has ruptured into a singed hole from which actual fire, cinders, and smoke come out. (( i have a smoke tutorial as well, it’s better than this one because i’m just kinda not good at tutorials usually lol)). obviously burns severe enough and chunks of you start falling off and exposed bones / you reach the burnt and crispy stage but that’s probably a step beyond what you wanted to learn about here
of course, i tend to simplify/stylize even further for most drawings since my default style is very cartoony, in which case, just stick to the splotches and sometimes the boils/blisters, and use more solid edges to keep the burns from looking too deviant from the style.
