Jughead was curled up in Jason’s ridiculously intricate bed, head on his chest. He’d just spent the night with the redhead, as was fairly usual at this point. It wasn’t too difficult to sneak Jughead into Thornhill, though they had to be careful to make sure he wasn’t seen once he was in there. He’d spent a few hours stuck in Jason’s closet once, in just his boxers. That was an interesting evening.

He let out a soft, content hum. “Why d’you have to make everything so fancy?” His normally cynical tone was weighed down with sleep, making it into something soft and fond. “There’s n’ point spendin’ so much money on shit, Jay.”

Jughead’s lips curved down into a frown anyway, despite the reassurance from his redheaded best friend. He took the ice pack from him and gently pressed it back to his face. “It isn’t just a bruise. What the fuck happened?” Curse words were his language, slipping between his lips as easily as the dramatic prose he was so fond of.

Jughead’s eyebrows knitted together and he let out an annoyed sigh, deciding to forego his plans for Southside redemption. Those, at least. He would figure it out later. He leaned back against the couch and turned to the person next to him. “So,” he started, slightly awkward. “What’d you invite me over for?”

“Can we not talk about evidence anymore?” Archie’s lips pressed together, a heavy breath leaving him slowly as he sorted through the turmoil that was his thoughts. “I want to spend my last weekend actually enjoying what time I may or may not have left.”

Jughead gave his best friend a long look before nodding. “Yeah, okay. Fair enough.” The knowledge that this might be Archie’s last weekend with him weighed heavy on his chest but he tried to push it aside. For Archie’s sake.

Riverdale was quiet. Too quiet if you asked anyone that had been here for years. With everyone an eminent threat nowadays, the town remained silent.

But it was a good quiet. Especially in the night. It helped Morgan think and understand, something she never felt the need for anymore. Not after everything. So when the night came, she was more than happy to slip out and spend her time where she wanted to.

She tiptoed downstairs, cardigan pulled close and sock feet shuffling quietly. Vegas lifted his head to see what was going on, but once he saw the familiar mop of curly red hair, he laid back down with a soft huff. Morgan chuckled, grabbing the mug of hot chcolate she had before and heading out to the back porch.

The night was chilly, emitting puffs of her breath when she breathed. Fall in riverdale was different. Warm in the afternoon, cold in the morning and night. But she was never bothered.

She froze when she saw the figure sitting in her porch steps, but once she saw the beanie, her apprehension dissolved.

“Jughead?” The quiet redheaded girl spoke. “What are you doing here? And why are you inside?” She asked from behind him, confused.

Jughead sipped his black coffee, eyes staying straight ahead. “Needed to think. And Archie snores.” He’d been staying with the Andrews since he’d lost his home again. He didn’t mind; he actually loved it, the feeling of being wanted.

He seemed a little off. And he knew that. But he was stressed. The fate of an entire group of people now rested on his shoulders, thanks to his absentee alcoholic Dad handing him all the responsibility. He didn’t mind the mantle of Serpent King. After all, hadn’t he been cleaning up his father’s messes his whole life?

Again he sipped the bitter coffee, relishing the warmth. It was chilly outside and he’d just thrown a jacket on over his pajamas. He was naturally cold, one main reason he tended to wear so many layers. But he’d live.
