|| Get to know VELMA DINKLEY who’s NINETEEN years old and a FRESHMAN in college majoring in FORENSICS. They are from CALIFORNIA and are often times mistaken for ISABELLA GOMEZ while others say they remind them of VELMA from SCOOBY DOO. ||

Headcanons

They’ve never felt ashamed of their identity once they figured it out for themselves. It was more a fear of other people not accepting them that made Velma hesitant to come out. 

They love unsolved cases and spend their time watching tv shows and movies all about crimes. They’re pretty sure they’ve solved a few, but they don’t think anyone would believe them.

Velma’s never gotten below a 4.0 gpa in their life and if they did they would probably cry. 

Their humor is more on the dry and sarcastic side, but they’re never afraid to laugh at their own mistakes and even some of the stupid jokes and puns their friends make.

They pride themself on being the voice of reason in the group.

Without their glasses, Velma is legally blind.

While they definitely prefer they/them pronouns and will tell people such, if people just default and use she/her they don’t get as stressed and uncomfortable as they used to. They know people are ignorant and they’re going to tell them such and they like educating people on that. Of course, when people they know and are out to use those pronouns for them, they do get a little more hurt by it. 

They feel comfortable in their skin, they feel like they know who they are. But Velma still has their bad days where they’re unsure about it all. About their identity, about their sexuality, about any of it. They know they’re lucky to have a group of friends that supports them so much because they know there are some who don’t have that. But even with all the support in the world, they still get self conscious about it at times. They sometimes feel like they’re not good enough for other people.

They want to study forensics to help solve mysteries and murders and cold cases. 

They believe in aliens and certain supernatural things, but mostly endulge the rest of the gang. 

They’re a realist

Velma tries to say they’re a pacifist, but they will punch someone if they have to. Not because they want to, but because it’s what needs to be done.

Fun Facts

They basically live off of coffee since sleep is not something they do a lot of.

They can’t drive.

They want to believe in the magic that’s been happening in Corona, but they’d like to see it first and maybe run some tests or experiments. Or at least assist someone who runs tests or experiments. 

Connections

Norville “Shaggy” Roberts -  Shaggy was the first person in the Mystery gang they felt comfortable coming out to. The two of them have just always been close, and something about their laid back demeanor keeps Velma calm. Shaggy is also the only member of the Mystery Gang that Velma has actually slept with.

Daphne Blake - Velma’s best friend for as long as they can remember. Daphne and Velma have a special connection and they really balance each other out. Velma also looks to Daphne as an assisting voice of reason when Shaggy and Fred get out of hand. The two of them have made out of a few occasions and got pretty close to sleeping together before Velma chickened out. They haven’t admitted this, but they were just nervous because they didn’t want to disappoint Daphne. 

Fred Jones - Velma would probably still live in their own little bubble if it weren’t for Fred. He really helped them come out of their shell, and he’s always been there for them and supported them in his own way. Velma has had the least romantic interaction with Fred. Not because they don’t want to, but because 1) they’re intimidated by him a bit in the sense of who’s more experienced, and 2) they don’t think it’s fair that they get with Fred before Daphne does.

Chuckie Finster - A good friend of Velma’s who they often find themself nerding out with. Either over books or movies or really anything. Chuckie is like the perfect geek friend to have. it’s nice to have a friend that has a lot in common with you.

Wanted Connections

More Friends - honestly, you can never have too many friends.

Exes, crushes, romance - Either someone Velma dated for a while, someone that either has a crush on them or they have a crush on, or someone who they maybe could see themself going out on a few dates with. 

Meddling Kid - Velma and their friends poke around in a lot of people’s business in the name of solving mysteries. Feel free to have someone who either is just annoyed with this young adult pestering them, or has concerns that they might actually come across something that could get you in trouble. 

A rival - this could be a competitive friend, an academic rival, someone else who likes to solve mysteries. This doesn’t have to be like a vicious rivalry, this could be amicable. Like they use each other to grow stronger sort of rivals. Like pokemon rivals.

Mystery buddies - Sure, Velma has the Mystery Gang, but they’d also love some other friends to solve mysteries with. Or Velma could just sort of be a consultant to your mystery solving muse. Maybe they share information they’ve gathered that might help each other out, maybe they actually work together. Velma would also like to meet someone who’s studying the magic because they know if they talk about it with their friends, they’ll never shut up.

Fred hummed in thought, driven by the desire to follow one of his true few passions: investigation. Velma was right that the obvious motive lied in plain sight, but staging a stabbing somewhere public was not exactly the best plan. “An angry band member would know where and when the boy would be alone, but they’d need a hell of a disguise to not get recognized after.” He mused aloud, eyes trailing across their surroundings for clues. “What are the odds there could’ve been a security camera within close range? Close enough to show who was headed in that direction around the right time?”

Velma thought for a moment. “Could’ve been a hitman? That way it seems random and other people can play along like they’re just surprised.” They thought for a moment, looking around. “I would think not super high. But... there were hundreds of people filming all sorts of things. I bet we could look on social media? Maybe there’s a post of someone getting ready backstage or someone standing near enough to the stage to get a shot of someone going back there? Though that could take hours to look through all that.” They glanced at the stage, then around to see if there was anything that looked like a security camera. “What about security? Maybe we could ask them? See if they saw anyone sneaking around who wasn’t supposed to be backstage? But, then again, it could’ve been one of the performers before the three main bands, so then they don’t look suspicious being back there.” This was too many what ifs. But that’s all they had right now. They didn’t have any leads; only hunches. “What if we started by seeing if there was any evidence left behind?”

Shaggy looked up from his bowl of fruity pebbles with a little wave, frowning when Velma looked so much more exhausted than they had that morning. “Pretty sure it was so you’d be able to sprint on through your credits,” he offered around a mouthful of cereal, crunching, then swallowing loudlyiozre how to help, offering up his bowl of cereal in a moment of panic. “Gotta slow down, my friend. Wanna chill here, go for a walk?”

“I mean, yeah, but also it’s more exhausting than I thought it’d be,” they thought for a moment. “Would it kill me if I put an energy drink into my coffee in the morning?” They looked at the bowl he held up and gave him a small smile. “You know I don’t know how to go slow,” they chuckled as they caved and took a bite of Shaggy’s cereal. “What would you suggest. A walk sound fun, but also tiring. Chilling here also sounds nice, but then there’s absolutely nothing keeping me from falling asleep and I’ve still got some homework I need to work on later. You’re way better at chilling than I am, so like, you pick what we do.”

he finds himself jumping along with them a little, sheepishly taking a step back as he bashfully scratched the back of his neck. nice, finster, way to startle one of the only friends you have outside of the rugrats. “s-sorry about that! didn’t mean to like, scare you or anything, obviously, just ya know, saw you here and thought i’d say hi, you know how it is…” once getting past his own nerves and embarrassment, chuckie couldn’t keep the small amused smile from curling his lips at the sight of velma’s quick dismissal, raising a playful brow before glancing down at the paper then back up at them. “should i like, pretend that i bought that, or…?” he tried to hide the smug look on his face, he really did. “oh, uh, was finally gettin’ a book that i’ve been waiting for on hold for like…ever.” he shared, exaggeratedly, holding said book up from under his arm. “might get a smoothie on my way back…or an iced coffee, ya know? choices are endless.”

“Oh, no, you’re fine,” Velma rushed. “Sorry, I was just a little lost in thought.” They smiled, making a face and Chuckie’s smug look. “Ha ha,” they rolled their eyes. “Just don’t go telling everyone about what you saw, or I’ll have to kill you,” they joked, hoping their tone came off as sarcastic and not threatening. “Oh, nice! I’ve been meaning to read that one. You gotta tell me if it’s good or not,” they smiled, glad to change the subject from what they worried could be misconstrued as a threat. “That’s good. Coffee is always good. Unless you need to sleep. But like, what is sleep anymore anyway, so my input is always coffee.”

“He’s not gonna be happy when he gets outta there.” - fred

“He’ll be fine,” Velma waved off their friend’s concern. They glanced between the bathroom door and the bowl of chips Velma and Fred had finished in the short time that Shaggy had been gone. “I mean, did we eat the last of the snacks, yes. But I’ve never known Shaggy to be angry, so like, everything will probably be alright. And if he does seem upset, I’ll run to the store.”

“I have had the longest day,” Velma said with a sigh as they sat on the couch next to their friend. “Why did I take summer classes? Why did I think that would be a good idea?” They’d only had like two weeks off of school before the fall semester started and they were feeling it. “Why can’t I just half ass like one thing in my entire life?” they joked with a sigh.

chuckie was searching through the ‘hold’ aisle at the library, searching for the specific book he had been notified finally came in, lowly grumbling under his breath dramatically as he searched and let out a sigh of relief once finding it, almost going as far as kissing it, were he not still in public…surrounded by other people. it was while he was on his way out that he noticed the other, sat at one of the tables on their laptop, almost perking up instantly and deciding there was really no harm in waiting back just to say hi, right? making his way over with an easy smile, the boy crouched down a little so as not to startle his friend too much, at least this way they’d kind of be able to see him coming from the corner of their eye, or that’s what he figured at least. “hey velms. watcha workin’ on?” @jvnkves​

Velma was scribbling out notes, doing their own work into the stabbing. Mostly because it had been a long time since they’d been able to solve or at least work on a real mystery. So far though, nothing was coming up. It genuinely seemed like their were no witnesses, or nobody was willing to talk to some random kid about these sorts of things. They see something out of the corner of their eye, but it still causes them to jump a bit when he speaks. “Oh, hey Chuckie. Um...” they look at their notes that look more like they’re planning an attempted murder rather than solving one, “Just... doing some investigation work. Like, for class,” that probably wasn’t believable. “What’re you up to?”

Fred stopped scanning the crowd for clues, broken from his internal investigation by Velma’s words. “Exactly what I was thinking. A band member is stabbed the night before a huge competition, out in public, and no one’s there to witness it? That’s got to be premeditated.” He agreed, raising an eyebrow at them. “You thinking what I’m thinking?”

“Oh, we definitely have to look into it,” they nodded. “My guess would be another performer or a band mate with something personal going on or they’re tired of sharing the spotlight with him.” Velma thought for a moment, glancing around the crowd. “But that would be easy to identify. As soon as the guy comes to he’ll be able to say who it was... We gotta find more information.”

“I can’t believe nobody saw one of the main performers get stabbed. That just... there’s definitely something dirty going on here, this isn’t just some random coincidence. Right?” Velma said, turning to Fred. “This isn’t just a random attack. Something definitely feels off or planned.”

Dimitri smiled at them, eyes playing very friendly and charming as his gaze trailed over Velma’s face to read their facial expressions. “Oh I totally relate to that, my wallet is my whole life,” he chuckled for a bit, and then went to pat his pockets to make sure his wallet was there as well—which he knew it was. He just wanted to play it off, so he sighed with relief, “It’s either that or return it to a police station, but I feel like they’d be more slow about it, don’t you think?” He laughed and then looked around the two of them at everyone passing by up and down the street, “You having a good day? Pretty busy streets today, huh? Make sure you’re being safe out there, friend,” he grinned wide.

Velma watched his movements. And they hate themself for not being able to tell if this is an act or if he’s really just this way. Seemed like an act, especially when he checked to make sure he has his own wallet. “Uh, huh,” they nodded, noting how he didn’t consider stealing an option that some people might do. So he’s either really trying to play this up or he’s genuinely just an idiot and the cynical part of Velma says it’s the former. “I mean, I’ve definitely had better days. Almost lost my wallet, you know? And my name is Velma, but I’m sure you already knew that because like you said, the streets are pretty busy today, so I’d assume you peeked inside the wallet to make sure the ID matched the person you were returning it to.” They said, almost like they were bored of the conversation. They think about leaving it at that, but they don’t. “What an odd send off,” they look at him, “You know, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you know something I don’t. Like that there’s some dastardly pick pocket out there ruining people’s day.” Velma looks at him pointedly. “Because like, you said I dropped my wallet, but just because I’m clumsy doesn’t mean your wallet’s in danger too. But you seemed pretty relieved to find that it was still in your pocket. Which is a weird thing to be so worried about when you seem so confident that people would do the right thing and return it to either it’s owner or to the police station for them to return it. And you looked around so shiftily, it’s like you’re worried someone’s watching you so either you’re a bigger conspiracy theorist than all my friends, or you know that someone’s around here pick pocketing or something. And I would assume that it’s either you or a friend of yours seeing as you’re just warning me and not looking for some authority figure to tell.” Was their accusation wild and in a court of law would it be seen as circumstantial evidence rather than anything with facts to back it up? Yes. But either they were right in their accusation or their tangent would be weird enough to get this guy to be annoyed with them and see that they wouldn’t make a great hostage and walk away, so really it felt like a win/win either way.

“ i think your house is haunted ” (chuckie)

“God don’t say that too loud, one of the others might hear you, and then we’ll never hear the end of it,” Velma chuckled. “And I think it’s just one of the vents. I think Shaggy his something up there that he didn’t want someone to see and then it fell into a place he couldn’t reach and now it haunts us all.” They pause for a moment thinking. They lowered their voice a bit. “Or it’s the ghost of the old person that lived here like thirty years ago. Could be either or, really.”

“ would you want me? ” - fred

Velma couldn’t move for a second. They were just sort of staring at him. Not in a way like they were horrified he’d said something like that, just... surprised. Because why would Fred care about something like that? They... in most situations it would be them asking him that but they never would because they always feared the worst answer was to come. They finally blinked. Thought for a moment. Then velma shrugged. “Anybody would want you, Fred. And it shouldn’t matter what I think or what I’d want or not want because I never know what I want.” They laughed a bit, mostly at themself. “I try to act like I don’t care about certain things, but I just... I get weird and nervous with questions like this because maybe I would want you, but there’s this huge part of me that could never understand why you would want someone like me.”

it wasn’t every day dimitri tried to flirt with someone—but whenever he did he always tried to make it easier for himself. by making it harder. so when he found someone that peaked his interest, dimitri slyly walked past them and swipe, he had their wallet in his hands. he walked away for a little bit, opened the wallet and looked—he wasn’t going to take anything. he wasn’t that bad. once he looked over their id card, he waited for a moment before turning around and calling them down, “hey! i think you dropped this,” he flashed them his charming smile, running a hand through his hair before holding out their wallet for them to take back, “you should be more careful, i’d hate to lose my wallet.”

Velma turned when they heard someone call out. They looked over, brow furrowed. “Oh, weird,” they said, not really sure how their wallet could’ve fallen out of their pocket. Velma took a step closer, taking the wallet back. “Um, thanks. Yeah, it’d suck to lose my wallet. Got all my important stuff in here.” Clearly he was trying at something with that smile and the hand going through his hair, but Velma... wasn’t buying into it. Because this felt like something out of one of the true crimes podcasts they listened to where there’s a really charming and charismatic guy who’s just trying to be helpful and then maybe that leads to talking and then next thing you know you’re trapped in a basement. But that was so cynical and they could almost hear their friends rolling their eyes at them. “Nice of you to return it; not a lot of people would do that.”

“Do you realize what you could have done!?” (Dexter)

“Yes,” they answered matter-of-factly, “And it would’ve been awesome. You’re not the only smart person around here; I know my way around some chemicals.” Velma set down the beaker though. “Would there have been a small explosion? probably, but it would’ve been contained and nobody would’ve gotten hurt. What is science without testing a few hypotheses and making a few messes?”

“How can you read this? There’s no pictures!“ - daphne

“Daph, you can’t be serious,” Velma deadpanned as they looked up at their friend, knowing full well that she could be serious. “I feel like a majority of books don’t have pictures. Don’t you have to read things for school without pictures? And I seriously doubt you’d rather me be reading a picture book version of a song of ice and fire.”

Fred followed Velma’s gaze to the the unfortunate stranger, pulling a loud laugh from him. “Oh, come on, Velm. How else will someone see your eyes sparkle?” Velma had always been one of Fred’s favorite people to hang out with one-on-one, if only because they always had something witty to say; they were one of the few people who could keep his attention without even trying. “Besides, if you wore contacts, you wouldn’t have to worry about losing your glasses. If I had a dollar for every time you dropped them less than a foot away and had to search for minutes, I’d be… Well, I wouldn’t have to rely on a family fortune, that’s for sure.” The words were said jokingly, but he grinned at them nonetheless.

Velma rolled their eyes. “Ha ha.” They know it’s a joke, but Velma didn’t really care if anyone saw their eyes sparkle with anything, and they especially didn’t need it to be with glitter. “I think they sparkle arguably more with glasses. Just look at all the light that can reflect off of them.” Velma moved the frames so the sunlight could bounce off them. “I mean, maybe. But what if I lost a contact. Do you know just how much harder that would be to find? And come on, it wouldn’t make you that rich. I don’t lose them that often, do I?” Velma thought on it for a moment. “Well, I lose them less than I used to at least.”

“And that’s why I don’t wear contacts,” Velma said, pointing to someone who clearly had gotten glitter in their eyes and was frantically washing their contacts at a water fountain. Which was clearly a struggle. They looked back over to Fred when they felt they’d seen enough of that train wreck. “Well, that and I don’t think I can get my prescription in contacts. But that doesn’t matter. Point is, glitter is dangerous and shouldn’t go near eyes.”
