If you adamantly refuse to even hear an opinion or point of view that differs from the one you've been taught to believe, you don't actually believe the one you've been taught. A genuine conviction doesn't waver from something as flimsy as mere exposure to disagreeing ideas. If you fear that hearing an idea that deviates from the "right" ones might make you accidentally adapt it, get the two confused and forget which one was the "right" and which one was the "wrong" idea, and get rejected by your peers by accidentally echoing the wrong kind of thoughts, you don't actually truly think that the things you've been taught as right are right.
Not because you would somehow deep down secretly think that the "wrong" ideas are "right" and the "right" ideas are "wrong", but because you simply do not actually think at all.
Kinda like parents who are worried their kids being exposed to outside ideas will turn them down the wrong path. Well if it's that easy, it sounds like your propaganda just sucks and you don't really trust it. Let that shit run free in the marketplace of ideas if you're so convinced you're right.
And now, a tale straight from the vault itself:
I once got into a debate with an Elder, and after laying out all the arguments and such, he simply stormed off. Mother then told me to apologize to him.
...I never managed to find him since then, much less apologize. In fact I don't even know what happened to him. I do wish him well.
Degurechaff, remembered this funny anecdote.
@fitey777 I'm not about to let you hide in the comments

lol the jw org made a tiktok and instagram account. Can't leave any comments tho.
This is ridiculous.
If you want to see (and block) it's jw_pressroom
One of these days we gotta have one of them MST3K-style commentary on their tiktok vids.

Most of my family is PIMI, so I get to hear a whole lot of the horrific things happening in our Kingdom Hall.
One of those things regarded a sister who traveled to work at a bethel in Brazil if I remember correctly. She told us that after a few hours the brothers and sisters there essentially roleplayed Armageddon without warning her: a brother running up to them and screaming about how the time had come and how they’ve gotten directions from the Governing body at some point. The brothers and sisters, including her, locked themselves in a small room with some of the brothers outside banging on the doors to make it seem like they were being hunted down. It went on for hours. She said it was a thrilling and beautiful experience, that she can’t wait for Armageddon and that it was hilarious when the brothers revealed it’d all been a joke (after hours of hiding inside that room and telling each other Bible stories / personal ‘faith strengthening’ accounts reminiscent of those bunker videos they screened a while back).
That account was so terrifying to me, it’s such an abnormal way to view being locked inside a room under the guise of the world ending. Definitely a doomsday cult, they love their apocalypse so very much.
.
I don't know if this fits exactly but whatever, it'll do me good to tell someone. (Trigger warning: detail of CSA)
It's a long story really but I'll keep it short. I was raised a JW and taught that being gay was, of course, a terrible sin, one of the worst sins possible. I didn't really know what being gay meant (let alone at the time that I'm bisexual), but I knew it was BAD.
Anyway... When I was 14 we went on a family holiday to a swimming park where we'd been a few times before. This was years before I transitioned so I still thought of myself as a 'boy'. I was going around the centre with my brother (he was 12) and two men started talking to us while we were waiting to go down a flume (I think they were mid-20s).
I hadn't been taught healthy boundaries and saw every interaction with a stranger as a chance to convert someone new to being a JW; so when they came down the flume after us we kept chatting.
Next we went to a huge slide that went outside; it took like two minutes to go down this thing, it was LONG. You were supposed to go down one after another and my brother went first, then after a gap one of the men. But when it was my turn the other man followed me immediately. I was sat upright and he came up behind me, sat with his legs either side of mine, and held me by the waist. I didn't like this and tried to get away, but he kept pulling me closer and holding me tighter.
This next bit is really hard to type... He started humping me. And reached down and held/squeezed/stroked my crotch. Telling me I was "being a good boy". I could feel his penis between my cheeks... I just froze. I had no idea what to do.
Eventually we reached the bottom of the slide and he pushed me away. Only the start and end were visible from anywhere else, so no-one could see what had happened. I got out of the pool immediately and went back to the chalet; my brother was really confused but came with me.
I told no-one. For ten years I kept that day a secret, and even now only four people apart from me and the man know what happened (my ex, my partner, a friend I blubbed the whole story to when drunk one night, and my psychiatrist). I should have told my parents - but I didn't feel able to. Because I was so TERRIFIED that I had "done something gay", even though it was nonconsensual, and would be punished for it. Instead of seeking comfort, I prayed for forgiveness.
My relationship with my mother suffered after that... She used to come up behind me and surprise me with a hug from behind, which obviously I suddenly found very triggering. I would push her away - and instead of asking what had changed, she took this as a sign of me being a moody teenager, and would get angry with me. Our relationship has never fully recovered.
The JWs are directly to blame for what happened to me - along with the man of course. And I will NEVER forgive any of them.
First of all yes this story is well within the parameters of the type of posts to expect on this blog, but second of all...
Degurechaff, the amount of times I used this reaction image is Incredibly Concerning
Hello. Do you have any advice about supporting a friend who appears to be deconstructing/ questioning the teachings of JW? I know that telling them it's a cult would be counterproductive so I just stick to providing a listening ear.
Well, the fact that you're listening is a huge chunk of the job. But also be sure to encourage them to ask more questions. Any advice they seek from you should be welcomed with open arms.
One of the biggest things that keeps members PIMI is their insistence on the outside world being cruel and uncaring. The fact that you're listening at all, much less entertaining their doubts, is a huge dent in that conditioning.
And while outright calling the cult a cult is indeed counterproductive, giving a clear definition of what a cult is should (hopefully) allow the puzzle pieces to fall into place.
TL;DR, let them speak, let them think, and gently nudge them in the right direction.
-Degurechaff, once again playing the part of an armchair psychologist.
I'm the opposite: I could not for the life of me remember anyone's birthday. My excuse is I grew up Jehovah's Witness.
I see too busy with all that jehovah witnessing to have room in ones mind for birthdays (I know those psychos are the ones who dont celebrate birthdays)
Psychos is rather mild of an observation, but yes.

Got a notification 2 days ago that my tumblr is 8 years old, it's crazy
happy birthday I guess!
May your days be filled with more blasphemy!
-Degurechaff,
Rough sketch of Sparlock the Warrior Wizard, re-imagined as a battle-hardened old war dog.
And of course, his nemesis is the evil Julius Warwick.

If there's something from Fujos anyone can learn, it's that the more homophobic you are, the more hilariously gay you can end up looking by mistake.
-Degurechaff, Judas/Satan yaoi anyone?
oh no, @jasperthejester, you're not hiding in the comments
-Degurechaff, fr
ngl Spahlok the Warrior Wizard would go hard in Skyrim. A Nord warrior-mage hybrid build that joins the College of Winterhold and The Companions would be the way to run said character.
-Degurechaff, FUS RO DAH!
He'd probably be a Stormcloak.
-Degurechaff, it pains me to admit that (glory to the Empire!)

looool they're finally catching up to us dunking on them repeatedly.

These guys are not used to having their insane worldview critiqued.
-Degurechaff, big fan of Freedom of Speech.
Don't you worry; I'm showing the material alright, and what you call "the good news". I'm even directing people to your site! Showing people all the stuff about you.
Just don't expect a warm reception :)
