@jxdeau
The boy emitted a sigh of relief once the knives were tucked away, tense shoulders falling forward and becoming slack the moment he felt a little safer. He wasn’t aware of how quickly they could be thrown, or how skilled the man that held them was, but he didn’t want to risk being injured in the middle of the forest with his friends’ camp several minutes behind him.
“Edogawa Conan,” he dared to slink forward, hands still out of his pockets as he knelt in a large tuft of grass, “and where are you headed? It’s kind of weird to find someone traveling in the forest like this.”
He cast his gaze from one dark splotch to another, the light of the fire warping at the long shadows cast my mangled trees. It wasn’t the most inviting spot, but he had come from a larger clearing packed with tents and the smell of cooking curry – this place was bound to feel colder and lonelier by comparison.
“How many people do you have with you? I hope they don’t find my friends and scare them,” he could clearly imagine them panicking and trying to run away from a group of strangers, especially if they looked as intimidating as this guy.
“How many people? Probably-- Twenty or so. We’e just scouts, though... The rest of our group numbers in the hundreds, I’d wager.”
Judeau and his men had been sent out to scout out new territory with the hopes of finding a few high vantage points. So far his search had come up useless, but he had no desire to give up just yet. The Band of Hawk’s hand needed to extend over more regions and Judeau would be the one to assist in that process. For now though, a bit of a break was needed.
Putting a blade of fairly long grass within his mouth, the mercenary leaned back and gave a bit of a shrug. Honestly? He wasn’t entirely sure where exactly he was headed, so he couldn’t really give the other a straight answer. But surely, wherever he would end up, would be a bit of an adventure, right? The night was rather cold and pretty lonely, but at least he had that much to look forward to.
“But where we’re headed..? Who’s to say? Everywhere and nowhere seems appropriate. If we wander into an interesting town, we may stay there for a while. If our search turns up nothing-- Then we’ll just head back to camp. Sounds reasonable enough, right?”
« A thief… »
He had known only two thieves in his life. The murderer of his father, the Black Foe, who had stolen his masterpieces from his vault; and his half brother, who had stolen the loyalty of the Ñoldor and his birthright.
He had stolen himself, but justly so – he had an aim and friends had betrayed him. And so he wondered if the young man who was sitting in front of him had any right, any reason; survival, maybe, was one, dignity even. Fëanáro frowned, wrinkles around his eyes gave his countenance a gravity that did not belong to his otherwise ageless traits.
« I lived in places that were subtly cruel, for you would think yourself safe and sheltered, and yet you had no power over your own fate. Slaves, we were, pets. Yet, I see this land and I see that is equally cruel to all, and law-less, and I do not know which one of the two lives would be more hateful. But… »
The corner of his lip stretched his features enough to appear like a bitter smile, so unlike the mellow attitude of the man he had met. « But everything is better than crawling like worms in thralldom. Every sacrifice is worth it. » Something forceful grew in his voice, pushed by a sudden impetus that made him inhale the fresh air of the night. It reminded him of ancient struggles and of solitude.
« —Who are your companions? »
Those who knew of Judeau and the group of mercenaries that he worked within knew exactly how good the young blond was at his job. Light on his feet, he had always been much faster and much more stealthy than anyone else around him. He could get away with stealing pretty much anything within reason. Then with his knives, his skills were unmatched. He was good-- A little too good. While he was not a master of anything persay, he still proved to be one hell of an opponent to deal with.
Resting his arms behind his neck, Judeau shot a sly little glance in the other’s direction. He definitely was not wrong about the cruelty of the earth. Demons plagued every corner of the land, corrupt nobles wanting more and more blood to be spilled in their names, bastard orphan children being left out in the cold to die-- It was a very scary time. Though, Judeau had hopes that the Band of Hawk would slowly begin to change things.
“I don’t see how that’s any different from where you’re standing now, if I’m to be honest with you... If you’ve come in search of peace, you may wish to keep walking.”
Giving a visible shrug, the mercenary dropped his arms; only to fold them in front of him once he had done so. While there had been a time where he likely would have kept his mouth shut in regards to speaking about his band that he worked within, such a time no longer existed. Parades had been thrown in their honor, they attended formal balls-- For a group of hired thugs, they were incredibly popular.
“--I’m with the Band of Hawk; led by none other than the white hawk himself, Griffith. If you ever happen to see us in town, look for the man that the women, along with a certain muscle man, flock to. That would be the man that leads us.”
She learned early-on that willing humans to do things for her was easy. A bat of her long blonde lashes, flick of her tail, and nuzzling and bumping away, and she had treats and a bath and a freshly combed mane. Perhaps that made her spoiled, a brat, but all’s fair in love and food, right?
Despite the familiar command of wait (this wasn’t her master; why should she listen to him?) she follows him leisurely, noting the goal of an apple tree in the distance.
Perfect.
Of course she wouldn’t wait. This seemed to be a rather free spirited mare, after all-- Not that Judeau minded, of course. She was an innocent creature who would likely never have to face the same horrors as he would. Judeau loved creatures such as her-- And in a way, he envied them. Though, that would be kept a secret from most everyone else.
Bounding up the tree with a certain ease, hands grabbing it’s mighty limbs and hoisting the young man up, Judeau made his way to the ‘ prize ‘ near the top. Once he was able to get his hands on one of the red apples, Judeau laid upon his stomach and extended his arm downwards; smiling and handing the fruit to the horse down below.
“--..That’s what you wanted, isn’t it?”
// I'm glad I came across your blog! Your characterization, headcanons, and writing are top-notch. I've really enjoyed reading your roleplays <333
( ahhh! thank you, friend! I’m not really confident with my portrayal or anything of the sort, but I’m glad you enjoy my blog! really, it means a lot to me. ♥ )
I think the biggest obstacle to you being with Casca is you yourself. You're selling yourself short, brah.
Casca was the one who his heart longed for. The one he wished to return to at the end of the day– But he knew that she did not feel the same. To her, he would never be anything but a useful friend. Of course, if that was what made her happy, then he would be happy as well. Her happiness would always come before his own. Perhaps he was selling himself a bit short, but–
“I’m really not. Casca’s feelings are her own and I will not try to change them. She has given her heart to Guts– And I will support them both throughout their endeavours. Always.”
One of Lucille’s musicians got a bit aggressive at the sudden pass at, in his words, “the best orchestra in the world.” And before the violinist could take things too far, Lucille intervened.
“ Please excuse my fellow musician here. It’s a shame you’ve changed your mind in the moments of meeting us, but we do more than play every-day songs. You see, we play music of a different kind, enchantments. “
Feeling the wonderful challenge of rejection, Lucille thought this could be worthwhile. He sat up and presented interest in the other.
“ You don’t seem like our usual crowd. As of late we’ve drawn the attention of those who pay for petty songs at dinner parties. Although playing music is enjoyable no matter the situation, we miss our old work. If you’re ever in need of future arrangements The Unofficial Grand Orchestra would be grateful to serve. “
While Judeau very much enjoyed music, rarely was he ever given the chance to sit down and simply listen to any of it. The life of a mercenary was extremely taxing, after all. Moving from place to place, placing your life in harm’s way with every job you took on-- There simply was not enough time to sit back, relax, and enjoy such things. Besides, orchestras only ever really played for nobles. Which, of course, was not something that Judeau was. He had been born to farmers in the wood carving trade, had worked in a small travelling troupe, and now was little more than a thief. Music was something he could only admire every once in a good while-- Though, he supposed that he couldn’t really complain about it too much.
Noticing the bit of tension forming within the air, the urge to unsheathe a couple of his knives in defense suddenly appeared within himself. Though, it was lucky that the other had stepped in when he had. Things may have gotten-- A bit out of hand, otherwise. Though, he had been right. This man, whoever he was, seemed to be the type who only played for those willing to shell out a great deal of coin. Now, anyway. Though-- Maybe one day he would be able to save up a bit more in order to hear them play-- For he was certain that things were going to drastically change soon. Griffith, his boss, had been acting seriously strange as of late-- So strange that Judeau could practically feel death looming over them all. So listening to them play would be now or never, really. His life was to be a short one, but-- Perhaps it was going to be shorter than he originally thought.
“I-- It’s alright. No harm done. I should have approached with a bit more caution it seems. Though... I do think that I will hire you in the near future. I know someone who could use a bit more music in their life.”
Tail sways momentarily behind him as he looks to this stranger’s features, lips parted an inch or so in thought, once again. A prolonged pause is given, spent looking from the red of the covering to the other’s face, until his decision had been made. ❝ Uh yeah, sure, Mister. ❞ And with that, he’s holding the broken covering out to the stranger; eyes lighting up because he totally wasn’t gonna be able to fix that.
“Don’t worry about it. It’ll be in good hands-- Just give me a second...”
Giving a reassuring smile, Judeau removed the covering from the other’s hands. Luckily, it didn’t really appear to that broken, so it would be a bit of an easy fix. He had always been good with his hands anyway, so that would likely make things go a bit more smoothly. While he, of course, did not have to help this complete stranger, Judeau really did want to provide a bit of aid. Though it was not much, it was at least something! Surely this would make them a bit more cheery-- Making others happy was more of his thing, anyway.
Tracing his fingers over the casing itself, Judeau attempted to find the source of the issue itself. Once that had been done, the mercenary gave a bit of a nod and turned his attention back to the younger male standing before him.
“Yeah, I can do this! Is it okay if we find a place to sit though..? It’s kind of-- Hard to do this sort of thing standing, you know?”
Jealousy had always been one of the young mercenary’s faults. While he did not mind that he was always the ones supporting those around him, he did in fact enjoy that after all, but it became incredibly tiresome not to have anyone willing to help you out now and again. Forever the supporter, never the supported-- That was his fate. While he had accepted it quite some time ago, it still riled up some old, painful emotions.
Noticing the other exit Commander Casca’s tent, Judeau remained completely straight faced. While he did not smile, he also did not show any real signs of being upset-- Aside from the fact that he hurled a couple of his knives in their direction; barely missing them and embedding themselves within one of the wooden poles which kept the tent standing with a thunk.
“--...”
bye guts
Understandable. Whether or not it was a child didn’t matter, he was still hiding behind the tree and continued to make himself look suspicious to the one who stood so confidently by the fire. It was hard to find the motivation to reveal himself, however, when his eyes caught the split-second glancing of firelight against something small and metal.
Narrowing his eyes, he debated the best way to approach the stranger. Maturity and faint innocence might be best, considering here was here with his friends. Conan only hoped that those knives weren’t intended for anyone in the immediate area – or anyone in Beika, for that matter.
“Sorry, sorry!” Sliding out from around the tree, the brunette lifted his empty hands to shoulder height. He wasn’t unarmed, truthfully, but he had no reason to make use of his belt just yet. “You find a strange looking guy sitting in the middle of the forest, the first thing you want to do is hide.”
Judeau was much more understanding and approachable once he was aware what, or who, he was dealing with exactly. Seeing as the other carried no visible weapons and magic of any kind was reserved for demons, he relaxed. If push came to shove, he could always retaliate and use his knives to take the other down, but he secretly hoped that it would never come to that. Though, he supposed that he could understand the other’s concerns. Judeau was essentially on his own, in the middle of the night, huddled at a campfire. If he had been in Conan’s shoes, he likely would have been quite apprehensive as well.
Sheating his knives once more, Judeau appeared to be more visibly relaxed. If the other meant to do him harm, he certainly couldn’t pick up on it. Judeau was an incredibly perceptive young man and knew a great deal about the way humans interacted, so he was pretty confident in the fact that the other had not been sent to cause him any harm. Placing himself back down on his makeshift seat, though facing the other way this time, he gave the other a bit of a smile.
“I am pretty strange looking, aren’t I? I’m actually not really alone, though-- My accompaniment to my ultimate destination is only a little ways away. But really, there’s no need to apologize. You did nothing wrong. I, on the other hand, acted as though you were going to be used for my next bit of target practice.” A pause. “--The name’s Judeau, by the way.”
❛ Did y’not see the soldiers on the walls? Or the flags, or— ❜ he cuts himself off with a shake of the head. ❛ I’m probably not th’one you should be talkin’ to, but you’re in Skyhold. The Inquisition’s big ‘uge fortress thing-y. ❜
“Well-- Now that you mention it...”
Originally, he believed them to be thieves such as himself, but-- It seemed as though his original assumption had proven to be very much incorrect. Though, upon hearing the word ‘ inquisition ‘, his interest suddenly piqued once more.
“Inquisition, huh? Hm... Can’t say that I’ve ever heard of that, but it sounds rather important.”
+jxdeau;
T h u m p was the sound of a muffled drop of the man’s staff to damp land. With ease, the metal lifted, sparks dancing around the orb that sat atop, coated in painted runes that lit up the darkened spot around him. Only then, did the light of it give sight to the frown at his lips.
❛It is not polite to stare, monsieur. Can I help you with something, or are you going to stand there?❜
“Don’t mind me-- I was just admiring the staff that you carry. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”
Though weapons of a smaller nature had always been his main obsession, the young mercenary definitely appreciated all weaponry; blade or otherwise. From his position slightly above the other, Judeau was able to see many things. The runes, much like the staff, managed to capture his attention right away. Giving a slight smirk, the blond jumped down from his makeshift perch; dusting himself off once he had landed.
“If it seemed as though I was staring simply to be rude, then I apologize. I was merely-- Curious is all.”
have you ever been to a formal ball judeau?
“Aha– Yes, I have. Though, I’ve only ever been to one of them… And that was, of course, because I’m a member of the Band of Hawk… I doubt that I would have gotten in otherwise.”
Such an occasion had been one of the only times that the young mercenary had been fawned over by so many women– Though, that was likely due to the fact that a great deal of them believed him to come from money and/or be of high standing. Such attention was a nice change of pace, but it left Judeau feeling rather awkward. He never really liked having to watch his behavior so closely while in the presence of nobility, so it was a slightly uncomfortable situation. On top of that, he had always found such ‘ fancy ‘ clothes to be rather constricting– Though, he did get to see Casca, amongst other beautiful young women, all dolled up in their finery, so that was at least a plus.
“Perhaps if the Hawks are invited to such an event again, I will actually muster up the courage to ask someone to dance with me–!”
The pureblood held out her hand, feeling the rain trickle down her finger. It felt nice, to be honest, on her cold skin. So cold, she was so cold, lifeless. She often missed warmth, forgetting the feeling of her own, or that of a companion. She was used to it by now. Almost saddened that she could not relive it, but it was not regrettable. For she had lost too much to gain her power. Let it not be for nothing.
She sighed, staring at the droplets fall, making an almost soothing sound. Almost as if it would wash everything away.
“It’s comforting, I think.”
“Yes, I agree--”
Perk up. He needed to perk up. But-- He was such a jealous individual. He was jealous of the close knit relationships that everyone around him seemed to have, he was jealous of the way Guts and Casca touched, jealous of the way that he would truly never be the one needed by anybody. While the rain did have a slight comforting effect, it made him feel more lonely than anything else. Like the rain washed the grime off of the world, he, too, wished that it could wash away the pain within himself.
As though someone had flipped a switch within the young mercenary, the rather somber look which had been adorned by his features seemed to disappear; one far more cheerful taking it’s place. While it appeared completely genuine, it was, in fact, false--
“A-Ah, but you probably did not travel all this way simply to watch the rain fall with me! I apologize-- My name is Judeau.”
