Neil who doesn't believe in luck, except for the day he presented in the back of a stolen car and thanked his lucky stars that it was the gentle transformation into the lightly-scented beta and not an alpha like his father or an omega. It was one of the only times his mother had seemed visibly pleased, knowing that this was ideal for their life on the run. Neither had the time to deal with cycles or suppressants or strong scents. It also allowed Neil to exist on the outskirts even when he arrived at PSU. He didn't have to worry about the social dynamics or rules that were probably really strongly held in the 2000s Southern USA.
Meanwhile, to Andrew, who had been failed horribly by the adults in his life countless times and taken advantage of by people who were bigger and stronger than him time and time again, presenting as an omega felt like a death sentence. It felt like the universe was laughing at him, declaring him an even bigger target for vulnerability and prejudice. He learns that he has to compensate his nature bc he is automatically seen as weak and an easy target otherwise. He never lets his guard down, he likely abuses suppressants, and he does everything he can to reject his secondary gender and the norms that come with it.
And everyone thinks it's weird and unnatural. Sports fans don't think an omega belongs on an exy team, especially not one that tries so hard to be 'something he's not'. His teammates think he's rude and stuck up. His own family doesn't get where all his rage comes from. Nicky's perfectly happy to be an omega and Aaron, the bastard, won the gender lottery and is a beta.
The only person in Andrew's life, outside of maybe Wymack but that's different, who does not care that Andrew is an omega is Neil. Neil, who not just because he's a beta, but because of his life on the road, does not give a single damn about dominance or power or possession. He cares about trust and transparency. In the grand scheme of everything, he honestly couldn't give less of a shit about Andrew's secondary gender. It's barely the most interesting thing about the man after all.
When their relationship develops, for the first time in his life, Andrew is able to go into heat with less fear, because he doesn't have to worry about pheromone-crazed alphas trying to take advantage of him. He knows that the second he tells Neil to get the fuck out and be somewhere else, Neil would. He also knows Neil can cut a bitch and wouldn't let anyone near him, just without the overbearing protectiveness that can sometimes come from an alpha as well.
As a couple, they both can just...be. Andrew doesn't expect Neil to try and fulfill any sort of role or be a 'replacement' for an alpha. He's perfectly content with Neil as he is. And Neil doesn't want to have dominance, rank, or power over Andrew. He's perfectly happy to just be in the other man's presence for the rest of his life.
