Created by Riot Games, League of Legends is one of the biggest computer video game today, averaging 60 to 70 million monthly active players depending on the month. League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle area (MOBA) real-time strategy game (RTS). Players are divided into two teams of five and the main objective of the game is to destroy the enemy team's based called the "nexus." Each player controls a different "champion" with unique abilities and battle against the enemy team. The game was released in 2009 and ever since its release, Riot Games and League of Legends has become a major influence in the expanding global eSports scene. This post contains some spoilers for the World Championship Series.
The month long battle for Summoner's Cup at the 2015 League of Legends World Championship finally came to an end on October 31. The 2015 World Championship series was held in four different locations throughout Europe. The group stages were held at Le Dock Pullman, Paris (Oct 1-4, 8-11), quarterfinals at SSE Arena Wembley, London (Oct 15-18), semifinals at Brussels Expo, Brussels (Oct 24-25), and the finals at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, Berlin (Oct 31). Each venue was sold-out as soon as the tickets went on sale. For those that could not watch it live in the venues, the games were streamed online through various websites such as YouTube, Twitch, Azubu, and etc.
SK Telecom T1 (SKT) became the 2015 League of Legends World Champions and they are the first-ever two time winners of the Summoner's Cup, having won the championship series back in 2013. Teams from each region fought hard, but in the end, it was a Korean final between SKT and KOO Tigers. The finals, along with all the games throughout the World Championship Series can be found on the LoL Esports YouTube channel.
My Thoughts
The eSports scene encompasses other games such as Super Smash Brothers, Call of Duty, Starcraft, Dota and the list goes on. I have followed the eSports scene early on and it is amazing to see how much it as grown over the past couple of years. It is still growing with no signs of stopping anytime soon.
One thing that caught my attention was seeing Coke's advertisement during the breaks. The clip can be seen below:
Coca-Cola and Riot Games first announced their partnership in 2013, where Coke Zero sponsored the Challenger Series to support amateurs starting 2014. With Coke eSports, Coco-Cola aims to build a strong connection with the global gaming community. More on the partnership can be read here. I am glad to see that Coca-Cola and Riot Games has continue with their partnership, and I am curious to see when more brands will start partnering up with gaming companies or sponsoring them and the eSports scene.
Another thing that I want to point out was that I, like many others, was disappointed in this year's production value. Riot Games have been moving forward with each Championship Series, but this year they took two steps back. In season 2 and season 3, the opening ceremonies featured a live orchestra (in season 3, it also featured the Crystal Method and Wes Borland from Limp Bizkit). In season 4, the opening ceremony had musical choreography and Imagine Dragons performed their collaborated song with Riot Games, "Warriors," along with their other hits.

This year, however, the opening ceremony was simply a video. It felt anti-climatic and it didn't hype up the finals as much as the previous years. While I know that it is extremely difficult to follow up last year's performance (Imagine Dragons!), I still can't help but to feel disappointed. They could have had Nicki Taylor perform this year's theme song "Worlds Collide" or have a live orchestra again. Hopefully they will move forward again in season 6, and I am excited to see how everything will unfold. Perhaps season 6 can be held in Toronto; Season 6 at The 6ix! One can only dream though...
