starting a bullet journal, a guide by studypetals
hey everyone! it’s rhianne, or studypetals. i’ve gotten a lot of questions and concerns about how to start a bullet journal, so i decided to start a new one myself to show you how i set mine up!
GENERAL INFORMATION:
so what’s a bullet journal? well, it’s not an actual journal, per se, but rather a system of journaling! the “bullet” word comes from “bullet points,” the way tasks/events are jotted down in this journaling system. (source)
what is a bullet journal used for? a bullet journal can be used as a simple planner system, but it can also be a creative way to plan your daily/weekly tasks! some people even use it as a half-scrapbook/half-planner (like me!)
what’s the difference between a planner and a bullet journal? this is a great question i’ve gotten before. a planner already has the dates/decorated pages/etc. all you have to input into a planner is tasks and events. a bullet journal is a book of blank pages, so it allows more creative freedom than a planner does. if you aren’t patient enough for free-handing everything, stick to a regular planner. if you like having a unique journal/planner and like customizing your spreads, look into starting a bullet journal!
MY SETUP:
picture 1: material starter pack here’s what i use for my bullet journal (aside from the decorative things like washi tape, magazine cutouts, etc.)
moleskine notebook, regular, squared, soft cover
zebra mildliners
pilot g-2 pens
muji 0.35mm pens
picture 2: cover page i just have a cover page to catalogue what this journal has in it. you can always put anything you want on the cover page, like:
the semester you’re using it in
your name
“bullet journal” or “planner”
a simple quote
etc.
picture 3: index so for my first journal, i didn’t even use an index. it’s up to you whether you want to include one or not. if you use an index, remember to number the rest of the pages after it! you can either catalogue every page after you’re done with it, or only the pages you really want to reference.
picture 4 (left): legend this is super important, especially for a bullet journaling system! so in this particular system of journaling, each task has a bullet point next to it. the most regular one i’ve seen is a square, so that’s what i use. what the legend does is keep track of what each symbol means. of course, if you just want to fill the squares in after you complete a task, then you don’t need this. however, if you want more organization, then make up whatever symbols you need to for this part! there isn’t one concrete symbol system, so do what works for you!
picture 4 (right): testing stationery page i like seeing what each pen/highlighter writes like before i really use it, so why not make a page for testing them! what i do is write what type of stationery it is with the actual pen/highlighter so i don’t forget which stroke is which.
picture 5 (left): favorite washi page ahhhh one of my favorite pages. you can put your washi collection on this page, or just strips of the ones you like a lot! they can be as long or short as you want them to be.
picture 5 (right): youtube ideas! (or other filler pages) this isn’t for everyone, of course, but it’s one that i added! i just showed it to you guys since i wanted to show the washi tape page. anyways, there are a lot of cool pages you can add throughout your bullet journal, such as:
books to read/movies to watch/etc.
life goals
expenses
favorite quotes
moodboards
class schedule/information
recipes
AU ideas (for writers!)
favorite art pieces
favorite lyrics
etc.
picture 6: weekly spreads the big one! so this is what i primarily use my bullet journal for. step-by-step, this is how mine are created (but you can always make yours unique):
make the title (“week #,” or something)
write the days
write the dates
write down the tasks for each day
make a section for something you have to do each day (the “essentials”)
write down the extra sections (goals, important dates, quote of the week, habit trackers, etc.)
decorate with washi tape, doodles, printed pictures, magazine cutouts, leaves, flowers, movie tickets, etc.
extra resources from me to you:
doodle references
banner references
font references

WHEW. that’s all i have for this topic (for now.) i hope any or all of this helps you guys out there wanting to start a bullet journal. if you want to make one, we’re gonna be in this together! have fun and remember the most important thing: it doesn’t have to be perfect. not all the pages are gonna be great, you’re gonna make mistakes, and some pages are just not gonna be what you wanted them to be, but that is 100% okay. just remember to have fun with it, and just.. start!

Relaxing things to do in the summer: Part Two Other parts [here].
Improve your handwriting! Without school to pressure you and make you sick of taking notes, there’s plenty of time to try to perfect your handwriting. There’s lots of different ways to do so, but I’ve found what works for me is to find an example of how I want my handwriting to look and slowly practice writing in the same style. Over time, it becomes integrated into my handwriting!
Rearrange your room! It’s super fun, helps you clean, and you can even map out what you want to do online.
[x] [x] [x]
Go on a run! Okay, sure, it’ll be hell. But it will help you get in shape, and exercise has tons of health benefits! Plus, there’s apps that can help you. Don’t you want an app?
[x] [x] [x] [x]
Hang out with friends! I have this problem where I completely stop talking to all but one or two people over the summer. (Yikes!) I’m trying to stop that this year. Getting together with friends is fun, especially if they have a pet. (Not to mention this app completely takes away the need to plan ahead of time.)
Write! It’s fun, it’s stimulating, it helps you learn new vocabulary and keep your brain in shape over the summer… What’s not to love? Writing is super fun, not to mention the character and plot development that goes along with it. Whether you’re a beginner or expert, there’s something in it for you. Here’s a few *simple* websites that I’ve found that are nice to use when writing:
calmlywriter. features: opening preexisting files, downloading files, inserting pictures, changing font settings, “focus mode,” link to chrome extension for typewriter sounds, link to grammarly’s grammar check, and its own chrome app.
google docs. features: so much stuff oh my god, plus it saves automatically. honestly I’d just go to the website to read about it if you don’t know already.
zenpen. features: invert colors, set target word count, and save text.
Read poetry! (Or write your own, if that’s your thing!) You don’t have to buy a fancy book in order to read poetry, you can find a lot for free online. Not to mention the multitude of YouTube videos on spoken word.
[x] [x] [x]
Swim, if you live near a lake, ocean, or pool. It’s good exercise, works different muscles than running or biking, and is a great activity to do with friends! It’s incredibly good for you.
[x] [x] [x]
Color! Coloring books are for everyone, and recently there’s been a lot of hype about detailed coloring books marketed as “adult coloring books.” Colored pencils are cheap (you don’t need super expensive ones), coloring books have tons of pages (there’s tons of different kinds as well), and it’s really relaxing (just don’t color outside of the lines).

Go to a thrift shop! Thrift shops have got to be one of the most fun places to go. You can find adorable clothes for amazing prices! I could try to list off some of my tips, but they wouldn’t be as thorough as these (below).
[x]
Make a flower crown! Seriously, nobody is going to do anything with those dandelions. Plus, flower crowns are pretty! Here’s a few different guides I’ve found.
[x] [x]
Press flowers! I mean, why not, if we’re still in that field? Pick a few dandelions and some other flowers and press them! You can use them in a journal or for decor.
[x] [x]
Visit a local coffee shop! Look up coffee shops near you and drop by. There’s something that makes coffee from local shops taste so much better! You can find out whether you want to go there with friends, and if you end up really liking the coffee shop, you can go there during the school year to study.
Make a terrarium! I’ve always envied terrariums, and my friend recently made one (yes, it’s absolutely gorgeous). I’m determined to make one this summer, so I rounded up a few how-tos sitting around in the black hole of the internet.
[x] [x] [x] [x]
Send a letter! Whether to a pen pal or to friends you see every day, letters are a fun way to show someone you care about them. You can put stickers, doodles, and even pictures of things you think they’d like in them. Make it super cute by decorating the letter and the envelope! (Make sure the postman will be able to read it, of course!)
Bake cookies! Tons of inspiration for different kinds of baking can be found on Pinterest, along with other recipe cites referenced in part one of this series. You can eat them all yourself or strengthen friendships by forcing them to eat your cookies.
Learn something new! The amount of information that we don’t know is limitless. Watch a mind-boggling science video, learn the scientific name for a pigeon, look up how to sky dive. Learning is fun and keeps our brains strong, entertained, and growing!
I hope this can help! At the time of posting, I only have 23 days left until school gets out (including today)! ♥ Theo

Super cool website alert
lingvo.info is a cool, free website all about European languages & linguistics in general.
There are four main sections to the website:
Lingvopedia for basic information about the 28 languages in Europe they focus on, like alphabet, history, phonetics, basic grammar, fun tongue twisters and sayings, etc.
Babylon for info on linguistic in general (as a prototumblinguist with barely any formal studies on linguistics, I’m eating this up)
Lingvopolis, which is like a searchable tumblr masterpost for language learning resources on the web
Geolingvo, which is a game you can play with some tumblr nerds all about langs and geography
There is also a section to download language lesson plans for teaching a couple languages!
I saw one of the people who develops this website at the Polyglot Gethering, and their team is working hard on it! It’s super, super cool, and I wish we could have a clone site for all the languages.
It’s also multilingual, so you can change the site language from English to 21 other languages.
fun little web application for u
Kanji Alive is a wonderful little tool I’ve found to make sense out of the couple thousand Kanji one might try to learn. The search function takes a bit to get used to, and clicking the info button up top gives you an explanation, but to get started I recommend searching “grade:1” or whatever grade (up to 6) you might need. Anyway this thing is absolutely lovely. It has:
stroke order with animation included
clicking the animation brings up a static image (like above) which lets you view the kanji in different fonts to get used to how it might look
onyomi and kunyomi readings with several example words using every reading (with audio! and hover over the word for translation)
honestly it’s so nice check it out

Hi all!!! The time has finally come for me to do a giveaway! Last month, I managed to get stuff to giveaway while I was in Korea! I know it’s not much, but unfortunately I’m a student on a budget & there was only so much I could bring back home. I also got a billion samples while I was there & I just don’t need this much body/skincare products. Here are some rules & disclaimers:
1. You do not need to be following me. 2. Giveaway blogs are not eligible. 3. Multiple reblogs do count. Likes count as well. 4. You must be +18 y/o or have the consent of your parents as I’ll be mailing you the prizes & need your address. 5. I will ship internationally. 6. I’ll post the winner & contact them through Tumblr so make sure your "ask" is enabled. 7. The winner must respond within 48 hours of being contacted or they forfeit the prize & I’ll randomly select another winner. 8. Do not remove this text.
What you'll be receiving:

Small additional prizes not from Korea:
Because I’m a student & I know that many of you guys are too, I decided to buy a few basic school supplies. You are eligible to also get a second album of your choice from 2 COOL 4 SKOOL, O!RUL8,2?, or Skool Luv Affair (for now, this will be purchased online & sent to you separately). You will also get your own mini Jin-paca aka Alpacasso {pics 1 & 2} (I’m sorry it’s not pink, they ran out T^T). I wanted to give at least one of you the opportunity to get an added prize for following me without the interest of getting anything from me. SO, if the winner is one of my current followers from before 9:30PM PST October 15th, 2014, they will be receiving the entire giveaway package + a 2nd album & a Jin-paca.
