Thatās Jeff Bezos, heās evil, we need to throw him outā and your friend tries to convince you that no poor Jeff Bezos has amnesia and is in a lot of trouble so you have to help him. This is insane to you but youāre in love with your friend so youāre like okayā¦and then Jeff Bezos regains his memories and runs off to live out his queer love story. Youāre like āwell that was INSANE wasnāt it? Letās go do boozy brunch to get over it and also I might be in love with youāā¦..but your friend/love of your life is like āthis is awkward but Iām actually the new CEO of Amazonāā¦ā¦.that would be terrible wouldnāt it? Well something really similar happened to my good friend crowley
on a more serious note after iāve processed this trauma, letās talk about crowley and aziraphale.
(HUGE spoilers for good omens season 2)
i want to particularly note how after crowley is asked if he and zira are together, he immediately goes on to drink. he gets so drunk over it to the point where he tells gabriel to jump out of a fucking window; and not only that but he expresses very vividly his feelings about ziraās trial in heaven - which wasnāt even a trial at all, it was just punishment without any negotiation.
the symbolism between heaven and hell and how it reflects on these two is almost jaw dropping. crowley was an angel once, and he clearly doesnāt want nor care for any kind of forgiveness after his fall. heās grown more accustomed to being in hell than being in heaven, and then he adjusts even more so to being on earth. he doesnāt quite believe in the whole good and bad trope no matter how much he insists on being anything but good and kind. heās somewhat neutral, but heās more inclined to follow zira in what he does - even if it takes a lot of convincing and the āi was wrongā dance.
zira is an angel and is very much attached to that role. we see that because of how devastated he gets after lying or when someone even mentions disobeying godās plan. and even as he grows more used to deceiving and/or lying his way out of certain ploys and keeping his angelic role, we still can see that he is very devoted to heaven; and, unlike crowley, is a firm believer in the good and bad trope. he even goes on to call crowley the bad guy in most cases. but no matter how far away zira strays from heaven, he is devoted to it. even after being called a traitor.
zira doesnāt appear to be very in touch with his emotions throughout the whole show. he can feel things like love, sure, but maybe that interferes with his own feelings. as such, he doesnāt realize just how close he is to crowley until itās too late. crowley, on the other hand, lost the ability to sense things like love and whatnot. he seems to have a firmer grasp and understanding on his feelings, especially since heās very emotional and expressive about it.
what zira does understand is being appreciated and praised. now getting that sort of attention from crowley is one thing, but to receive it from the metatron himself? thatās a whole new level of validation. especially after being offered such a position. itās not manipulation nor something in the coffee, itās aziraphaleās desire to please heaven - itās his devotion coming to surface again. and the way heās so utterly overjoyed at the prospect of having not one, but two things he loves at the same time makes him so unaware of what crowley would think. crowley clearly doesnāt share that same passion, and when he hears the offer right when heās about to spill his innermost feelings, that has to be absolutely destructive to him.
but then we can go even further. crowley is so desperate to hear that zira denied the offer because this is what it has all come down to. 5,000+ years of being on their own side, of being an angel and a demon, of being best friends and barely nothing more. he knows full well that heās changed far too much to go back to the life of an angel, and heās grown too fond of this little life he carved out for himself; for THEM. for it to all change in the snap of a finger, at such a bad time, is heartbreaking. thatās without mentioning how he just watched a relationship between gabriel and beelzebub take off faster than his own relationship ever could have.
they absolutely love each other, but it seems like one understands that more than the other. zira has been appreciated by crowley for so long, heās put his vesselās well-being into that demonās hands repeatedly. they could always lean on each other. but when the very thing youāve poured your whole existence into pleasing finally starts to exhibit that same sort of appreciation, donāt you think it could overpower that old source of love?
LIKE WHAT THE FUCK HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO RIP MY HEART OUT IN FRONT OF ME, CRADLE IT LIKE A NEWBORN CHILD, THEN SIMULTANEOUSLY CRUSH IT AND CURB STOMP IT UNTIL ITāS A FIBROUS POWDER???
crowley used the metal tool in season 1 to start time, and we learn that he's used it first to start space. to create the stars -- he still remembers how. he still remembers all of heaven's passwords: in the book crowley is described as an optimist because he has the "utter surety... that the universe would look after him". not god, but the universe. and of course he does: he helped create it and he's looking after it, too.
think about it: aziraphale had a sword, but crowley is about to face satan who wants to destroy the world, and crowley's only weapon is a tool of creation
Modern Day Dutch is a clout chasing Tiktoker who starts a TikTok house and his "haters" keep pointing out how most of his young housemates are in a toxic environment
