watching the hotd s3 trailer without rhaenys was deeply wounding
Tessarion the Blue Queen
I drew this nearly a year ago now but never posted it anywhere, but I thought, why not post it now.
(She's only on dragonstone because I stuck her into a background I did for a different drawing. That's also why the lighting doesn't perfectly match up)
5 times where Rhaenys assumes a position at the head of the Painted Table (or near enough/not where she sits).
Basically any time Rhaenyra is no longer or has not been presiding over the council, Rhaenys takes that space. Though she never sits down, and is often slightly of-centred because of it. And she makes way for the youngsters, in 2x04, acting as a support, reclaiming the position later on.
Funnily enough, this is another way of showing she is not quite The Hand. She sits on the left of Rhaenyra when in session, when a Hand normally sits on the right in the Small Council (and, indeed, Corlys sits to Rhaenyra's right) in 2x6. And a Hand (or regent) has the opportunity and authority to sit where the monarch would - Otto sits the Iron Throne in Viserys's stead, and Alicent occupies Viserys's seat in 1x8 and 1x9. Rhaenys remains standing.
Look - I just think it's an interesting piece of consistent blocking., and I hadn't noticed that she had done it before Rhaenyra returned in 2x01 (which would have meant her facing Daemon directly).
EVE BEST talking about PRINCESS RHAENYS TARGARYEN and her relationship with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, in interviews after the airing of "The Red Dragon and the Gold".
I'm getting emotional about Baela and Rhaenys:
Holds her to her during Laena's funeral.
Stays with her and Rhaena throughout Laena's wake, and gives them a huge hug and entirely focuses on them.
Advocates for Baela as a possible heir to Driftmark.
Checks on Baela's hand and face after the fight after they rush towards her and hug her again, and she holds the girls tight and protects them through the whole altercation.
Has Baela as her ward for six years: the only person that she had after her husband went to war and her children were dead. She raised her and raised her well.
Has her right by her side when she's enthroned on Driftmark, hearing the news about Corlys. Baela having hair like her mother, wearing Velaryon blue, Baela coming to her grandmother's defence when Vaemond gets antagonistic.
The script saying: It's evident they have a loving, trusting relationship.
THEY HUG. RHAENYS PUTS DOWN HER FACADE AND GOES TO COMFORT HER GRANDDAUGHTER IN A TIGHT EMBRACE. (cut portion of a scene)
Choosing to take Baela with her to King's Landing, not leave her behind when she could have - it's not even a thought: she's having both of their dragons readied. (cut portion of a scene)
Holding Baela's hand after speaking to Viserys in front of the court, settling the Driftmark succession. Baela grabbing her grandmother's arm when Vaemond's head comes off.
THE ENTIRE CUT SCENE FROM 1X10! ("...like my mother and father and you!" [...] "I just saw my daughter for the first time in years.")
Rhaenys looking down at her granddaughters kneeling for Rhaenyra as Queen. Rhaenys watching Baela leave her side to go to the Painted Table and be with Rhaenyra. Rhaenys deciding to fight in this war for her grandchildren.
The little smile Rhaenys sends Baela's way after declaring for Rhaenyra.
Rhaenys being at Baela's side when she asks (sending a message to her to come to Dragonstone to handle the council). Being proud of her when she stands up for herself against Alfred Broome.
Baela knowing the story of Rhaenys claiming Meleys off by heart because Rhaenys has told it to her.
"She was a Targaryen princess. The Queen Who Never Was. And she flew to Rook’s Rest of her own will. In defense of her kin. [...] I grieve my grandmother who loved me but I carry her on with me. I will see Rhaenyra ascend the Iron Throne, as Rhaenys wished. As Rhaenys herself should have."
Until the end.
EVE BEST talking about her character, PRINCESS RHAENYS TARGARYEN in interviews after the airing of "The Red Dragon and the Gold".
EVE BEST: If you've got to go... going on the back of a dragon, in the middle of the best kick-arse fight, that there's ever been, is quite a good way.
PRINCESS RHAENYS TARGARYEN + MELEYS "... because in the end, that’s the relationship."
I like to think that Meleys responds to Rhaenys's emotions in-flight, if Rhaenys is flying for emotional release (i.e when she's upset). And it's both protective and empathetic.
So, if Rhaenys lets out a cry or scream, Meleys will drown it out with a roar of her own. If Rhaenys starts to cry, Meleys will bank sharply, so that the winds will either stop the tears or she has an excuse for them.
If Rhaenys is shaking, Meleys will move so that Rhaenys has an excuse or a reminder to hold tighter onto her saddle and therefore hold onto herself.
RHAENYS TARGARYEN, during the Battle of Rook's Rest.
Rhaenys + her slight smirk Steve Toussaint: What she does [...] there's always a slight smile playing on [Rhaenys's] face in scenes that I always find interesting. Like a sense of being amused at the situation. If you go back and look at Season One, it's quite a consistent thing.

If you manage to read how:
- Rhaenyra is the youngest dragonrider in Targaryen history (7 years old)
- during Rhaenyra's lifetime there were born the most dragons that the Targaryens ever had
- Rhaenyra's she-dragon Syrax single handedly laid clutches after clutches of eggs after mating with Caraxes
- Rhaenyra's stillborn baby daughter was DRAGON shaped - "with a hole in her chest where her heart should have been, and a stubby, scaled tail"
- Sunfyre initially refuses to burn/eat her
- Once Rhaenyra is murdered all the dragons die
And you don't conclude that Rhaenyra is directly connected to magic and dragons... You're obtuse as hell.

No war so bloody as a war between dragons.
