@kademaki
when i finally remember i have a fic to write... but i still have 0 motivation
I said I was going to so I did. First Order Intern Randy!
He only gets two peopleâs drink orders right. General Hux and Techie. Hux even has a laugh when Randy complains about the mouse droids. Techie truly appreciates that Randy remembered the straw for his blue milk and Randy feels the Techie effect! :D
Kylo and Matt do not appreciate This Assholeâąïž
Hey I just wanted to drop in and tell you that I just came across your blog and have been binge reading EVERYTHING. I love all your stuff and I especially love The Bottomless Blue. Canât wait to read more of your stuff!!
AAHHH im so late to seeing this!!! tysm! Iâm trying to update more frequently since TROS inspired me again so I can pretend Hux isnt dead â€ïž
I got a lot of messages from hates of my unofficial app for Ao3.
As they wanted, my app is already down.
For all of you to know - the app wasnât really even covering expenses to its survival. And accessing all works was free. Those who wanted could donate to help develop app and infrastructure for notifications, recommendations etc.
Iâve got permission from Transformative Works to parse their website and that was absolutely LEGAL and discussed.
Not a single work was stored anywhere and I donât even have any web site. App was just a parser (haters, please educate yourself what parsing is). It was just displaying works stored on AO3 and had all FREE access. Â
I had to remove my app because of massive bullying. Bombarding me with thousands of reports on app store at night when I was sleeping (how honest and fair).
Sorry to everyone who used my app. Please go ask haters why they are so aggressive, you see, thats absolutely not my wish to delete the app.
Iâve put a lot of my heart, time and my own money into creative this app and now itâs time to let go.
Now when the app is down, leave me alone because I will not reply any of you any more. Bye.
As someone who did send you a message but just kept it firm and fair (by saying either I wanted creator profit-sharing or my work taken down) please stop trying to play the victim here. If anyone sent you straight up death threats or something thatâs wrong, but I know a lot of people that just sent messages that were stern but not cruel.Â
Just because our stuff is on a free site doesnât mean the content belongs to anyone for any use or that weâre consenting it to be viewed anywhere other than on a direct browser or downloaded in one of the file formats Ao3 allows for fics. If people want to view collections of fics they in a place they want to, they can download and save fics in multiple file formats from Ao3 itself to their computers, browsers, or phones. That, all the fanfic writers agreed to by posting it on the site. We didnât agree to anyone posting it or emulating it anywhere else and potentially making money off it, especially since making money off it is a legal gray area that we donât want to see get attention from any of the original creators.Â
The issue with creating a parser for a site that has free creative content is youâre still creating an app that uses their content - not just your own - as the primary draw, and that means you canât divorce the app from the content when talking about whatâs being used to draw in money. If you were just using your own content, asking for at least enough money (or more for a profit) to keep the app going would be reasonable. But as it stands, you scraped work that wasnât yours from the site and had set it up to be monetized (strictly to you and no one whoâd created the content) without asking any of the creators.Â
A parser is a basically a glorified web viewer, just scraping whatâs publicly viewable, some of us know that. But none of us agreed to that. And with you allowing for payment instead of doing it as a passion project that makes $0 like the rest of us: Why should you be able to make money when none of us do? And the fact it was barely supporting the app is something itâs impossible for us to have proof on, since you have no business arrangement with any of us. We have no idea how much money youâre making and how much profit youâre pocketing or not. You could be lying and making more than the operating costs. Since you did this without asking any of the actual creators (and you say you asked Ao3 but they do not actually own our content, they just host it) we have no idea if we can trust you on that. Â
Which is why this was a bad idea. Iâm sure youâve gotten a lot of really virulent hate so Iâm saying this more calmly so you understand it isnât an irrational response to think this was wrong. What you did was exploitative. Ao3 allowing it doesnât mean the content creators did. And you canât pretend the main draw of the parser isnât other peopleâs work. The fic content is the thing youâre ultimately selling, not the app itself. And since thereâs no transparency on how much youâre making, we canât know that youâre not making a profit when we arenât.Â
The best thing you can do now is just say youâre sorry, that you didnât think hard enough about permissions or ownership, and that you wonât create something like that again.Â
âI stole peopleâs content that they put up for free and put them in an app that people had to pay money for, but you guys are the bad guys for getting angry.â
The Bottomless Blue - Chapter Nine
Merman!General Hux x Reader fic
Youâve got Hux out of the aquarium and stashed at your apartment. Now Y/N has to figure out to get him back to the ocean.
previous
The aquarium was more alive than it had been in weeks. Â Shortly after returning to your desk after your lunch break, the scientists returned and soon after that the alarms sounded. Â Security responded and now the aquarium was on lockdown in full red alert. Â No one was allowed in or out without going through a security check. Â You figured the scientists had come back from the lunch party and found Hux gone from his tank and had rightfully panicked. Â
You watched as Luke and the head scientist accompanied the security guard from the security office back into the aquarium where Hux had been kept. Â They had been trying to replay the security footage that may have been captured from other cameras in the aquarium that werenât down. Â Luckily for you, they had nothing. Â They didnât have footage of you walking Hux right out of the aquarium. The only evidence was the security guard that found you giving a tour to an âinvestorâ and you doubted that he would put two and two together and realize that the investor was Hux. Â All you had to deal with was-
âY/N!â you closed your eyes at the sound of Lukeâs voice behind you before turning around. Â You were greeted with the sight of Luke, the head scientist, and the security guard. Â âItâs been a hectic day huh? Â This is Dr. Kenneth Pierce, heâs the head scientist here and this is Pete Walters, a security guard.â Â You extended your hand to both men. Â
âY/N, what can I do for you gentlemen?â you were doing your best to remain calm on the outside but on the inside, you were swimming in dread. Â
âYes, Iâm sure youâve seen the commotion today. Â Our prized specimen was taken from us.â you feigned a look that shocked and concerned enough for them to believe you. Â
âThatâs terrible! Who would have done something like this?â You were looking at Luke when Dr. Pierce spoke.
âWe donât have any leads but thatâs why weâve come to talk to you. Â Walters says he found you giving a private tour to an investor earlier today in the specimenâs room.â Â
âYes, I did give an investor a tour today, he showed up unexpectedly and the tour ended in the specimenâs room. But we did not see the specimen in the tank. Â I figured he was deeper in the tank. â Â you replied, hoping your voice was calm and even. Dr. Pierce considered you for a moment and you could see the security guard, Walters behind him giving you a look. Â After a moment, Pierce turned back to Luke. Â
âI think thatâs all I need to hear for now Luke. Â If anything else comes up, Iâll be sure to come back and talk to you Ms. L/N.â he responded while nodding. Â âWeâll let you get back to work while we handle this.â Â With that, he turned and headed back down the hall. Â Luke gave you an exasperated look before mouthing âitâs going to be a long dayâ and following Pierce with Walters. Â
You let out a breath before looking at the clock. Â Your shift was over and you could go home. Â You got through the extra security quickly as they dumped out the contents of your handbag and made you turn your pockets out as if you could fit a mermaid in your handbag or pocket. Â As you start your car, you began to wonder about what you were going to do when you got home and had to deal with Hux. Â He was a man now and not a merman. Â You could drive him back to the ocean tonight and be back late, just in time to get a few hours of sleep before your next shift. Â It could look suspicious if you took the day off tomorrow after Hux went missing. Â You banged your head into the steering wheel and lamented the lack of sleep you were about to get tonight. Â When you raised your head, however, you saw Dr. Pierce watching you from the entrance of the museum. Â You waved and quickly put your car into gear and started your drive home. Â You didnât see the dark car following behind you out of the parking lot. Â
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
You pulled into the parking lot of your apartment and turned off your engine. Â You looked up towards your building and contemplated how this was going to go. Â What would you say to Hux now that he was in your apartment? Â Before when he had been confined to the tank, most of your conversations revolved around getting him out. Â There had been a few where you talked about each otherâs interests but you hadnât ever really spent significant time alone together before you had to run back to your desk and resume your tour shift. Â
What would you even say to him during the long car ride back to the ocean? This was going to be a long ride. Â Would you even see him again after you got him back to his home? Â You shook your head and abandoned your thoughts and headed inside to your apartment. Â As you stood in front of your door, you wondered what Hux had been doing the past few hours in your apartment alone. Â Had he remained in his human form or had he taken the ring and bracelet off and returned to his merman form? Â You were almost disappointed when you opened the door and saw him sitting on your couch in his human form. Â
âHey, are you ready to go?â You said setting your bag down on the coffee table in front of the couch where Hux was seated. Â He looked deep in thought but glanced up as you entered.
âYes, though I was growing fond of your quaint flat. Â Itâs interesting how you can live your life in this small box.â He said standing and glancing around your apartment. Â âIâm not sure I could survive in this confined space.â Â
âItâs just me, it's cozy enough. Â I donât need a lot of space to fill. Â Let me change and we can go, it should only take a few hours to get you home.â Â You stepped into your room to change and when you emerged you found Hux staring at the pictures on your mantle of you and your grandparents. Â âThatâs my grandmother. Â She had just taught me how to clean and filet a fish in that picture.â Hux nodded and turned to look at the other photographs of you on your grandparent's boat. âThat one is from when they took me out on their boat to teach me how to dive.â Â
âSo youâve been exploring the sea since you were young then?â You nodded and reached to adjust the placement of one of the frames. Â
âThis one is from a trip where I learned how to tie all of my fishing knots for the first time.â you handed Hux one of the frames that showed your grandfather and you on their boat, hunched over, fishing line in hand working on knots. Â You remembered that day fondly, between your sore fingers from tying knots all day to being proud of setting your first fishing rod by yourself. Â Hux looked at the photograph for a moment before placing it back on the mantle in front of you. You stood quietly for a moment before turning back towards the front door. Â âShall we be off?â you opened the door and Hux stepped into the hall and called the elevator. Â
âWhat happened after you returned to work?â Hux inquired, âWas there a ruckus?â You shrugged. Â
âThe scientists came back shortly after I did and threw the entire aquarium into disarray looking for you. Â They donât know what happened to you and I obviously didnât carry you out so I think Iâm clear on that front. Â So, my plan is to drive you back to the beach then drive back here to the city and go to work as normal so I wonât look suspicious.â Â Hux gave an affirmative noise as the elevator arrived and the two of you stepped in. Â
âHopefully, I can get a nap in and enough caffeine to keep me awake tomorrow before work.â Silence fell over the elevator as the two of you waited for it to reach the lobby of your building. Â Just what you wanted, awkward silence between the two of you for the next few hours as you drove through rush hour traffic to the ocean. Â
Before you could try to restart the conversation, the elevator dinged signaling its arrival at the lobby. As you stepped out into the lobby, you felt a shiver go up your spine. Â You felt like you were being watched. Â You glanced over at Hux and saw he also suddenly appeared as tense and uncomfortable as you were. Â
âSomething feels off about this,â Hux pulled you off the side of the lobby and looked down at you from his full height. âWhat exactly happened after you returned to work? You said the aquarium was in âdisarrayâ, what does that mean exactly? Did they increase security? Did anyone talk to you?â
You furrowed your brows as you tried to figure what Hux was getting at when it dawned on you. Â âI did have to speak with the head scientist while the security guard, Walters, the one who saw us, was present but that was it. Â Other than that, I went through the increased security checks with everyone else.â Â Hux was silent as he surveyed the lobby before turning to you. Â
âWould the museum increase security protocols to include monitoring employee movements outside of the aquarium?â Hux said glancing out of the large glass windows of your building. Â
âI wouldnât know, I donât work for security, Iâm just a tour guide and assistant. Â Thatâs above my pay grade. Â But I suppose they could, considering that losing you would not only be a huge financial hit to the aquarium but a reputational hit as well. Â Theyâve been set to make a press conference about a new discovery but if they have to cancel, their reputation will take a huge hit. Â Why do you ask?â Â
âCorrect me if I am wrong, but is that not the security guard who escorted me from the property over there standing outside?â Â âYou turned to look, âDonât be obvious!â Hux whisper shouted in your ear as he put a hand on your arm to turn you back to face him. âBe discreet, does he live here?â Â you shook your head as you pretended to laugh at something Hux said and glanced over your shoulder before confirming that it was indeed Walters standing outside the lobby. Â âThen he must be following you since you are probably their best lead for my disappearance. Â We were the last ones seen in that area, it only makes sense that they would assume it had to be us.â
âSo what do we do now? Â Itâll look suspicious if Walters has followed me home and you're here. Â You're supposed to be an investor and I was just giving you a tour today. We canât get to my car without being seen so what do we do?â Â
âWell, I donât think youâll have to worry about that anymore,â Hux said glancing over your shoulder. Â You turned and made eye contact with Walters through the glass window. Â He looked away quickly and looked out at the small parking lot instead. Â âHeâs spotted us together. Â So there goes any worrying about security thinking we know each other outside of the aquarium. Â Theyâll know by tomorrow if he hasn't already reported seeing us together.â Â
You sighed, this changed things. Â What story could you concoct about the random investor showing up at your apartment? Â You had already claimed to not know him. Â Now Walters had seen the two of you together in the lobby of your apartment. Hux didnât have a car and you knew Walters knew what your car looked like so you couldnât send Hux to drive himself back to the ocean in your car. Â You also couldnât make the situation worse and have Walters see you and Hux together in your car leaving the city. Â
âI know this isnât ideal but should we just go back upstairs? Â Walters has already seen us. Â I canât get you back to the ocean tonight without worrying about Walters following us.â Â
Huxâs head tilted as he answered, âWhat are you proposing? If I cannot go back tonight what are we going to do?â Â
âYou could stay here with me for a few days?â you offered with a grimace.  âItâs not ideal but it would give us some time to have Walters stop following me and youâd be safe in my apartment.  Iâm the only one with a key aside from the landlord for emergencies. In a few days, when the excitement about everything has died down, I can take you back⊠unless youâd rather I buy you a bus or train ticket back to the ocean.  Youâd be surrounded by so many other people and it wouldnât be comfortable but-â Â
âI will stay with you for a few days. Then you will take me back to the ocean.â Hux affirmed while pushing the call button for the elevator. Â âOnce I am back in the ocean and have found a safe place to live since your scientists have found my ship, I will be in your debt and I always repay my debts. You risked your career and life trying to free me on multiple occasions. Not to mention you might not have even survived your meeting with Kylo Ren but you would have never been at risk if you were not trying to help me so my debt to you is immense. â Â The elevator arrived and the two of you stepped in. âYou should start thinking of ways I can repay you since I will not be at rest until it is repaid.â
Your eyebrow quirked at his mention of Kylo Ren. You had made a deal with Kylo Ren not knowing what he would ask of you and you hadnât told Hux that. You wondered if not telling Hux about your deal with the sea witch was a good idea or not. Â But now you were concerned with how much did Hux think he owed you? Â What could he possibly give you to repay you and why did he make it sound so cryptic? Â
also, as far as i can tell a lot of you donât quite understand whats happening with the unofficialao3app. the app doesnât make âcopiesâ of your work, it is accessing ao3 using your log in credentials and displays the content on in a nicer format. since itâs using ao3âČs o-auth and enables you to log into your account, iâm pretty sure the fics are not* copied onto another server. the webpage gets called, gets reskinned (dark mode, nicer font, nice buttons, etc.) and displayed within the app.
this isnât the same as someone copy-pasting your work onto a completely different website or server. (eg. that russian fanfic site)
which would be totally fine if the user wasnât asking for money (especially the subscription service). asking for tips or donations, like ao3 does, to maintain the apps on the various app stores would be fine, but actively profiting off of our work that we post to a non-profit site is unethical as fuck.
the whole concept of ao3 is that we (the authors) and the hosts are not making a profit. dressing up all the work we are doing (authors writing, and ao3 hosting) shouldnât be what enables someone else to make money.
edit: yes, creating that app was work, but the whole ao3 staff are volunteers. if you want to contribute to this fandom space, donât be greedy and try to make money off of everyoneâs backs.
*whoops important typo
I'm seeing a lot of posts about that shady fic app and I fully understand why authors are not ok with it. I just have a question that sorta relates to this. Ao3 has the option to download the fics in epub version and I sometimes do that and I'll load the fic in my phone's ebook reader. Is that a bad? Or is that something similar to using the shady app?
no thatâs TOTALLY fine. youâre downloading straight from ao3, the site thatâs hosting the works that we choose to post on that platform. fanfic writers post on ao3 knowing full well their fics could be downloaded and circulated that way. thatâs not the problem.Â
the problem is that this app is profiting off our works. ao3 doesnât make any money off of fanfic, or off of our works. theyâre not-for-profit, and made up of really hard working volunteers. the problem with this app is that it comes in and offers subscriptions to get rid of the ads, gets money from the ads that it hosts, and asks for âtipsâ. basically the person(s) behind the app is profiting from works that fanfic authors create for free, that ao3 hosts for free. (never mind that itâs an app so glitchy and terrible that i could literally write that in a day with my coding background, but thatâs a different topic)Â
so, yeah, downloading is fine. reading through epub is fine. some shady, glitchy app profiting off our works is NOT fine.
Pryde *pointing his blaster at Hux*: You betrayed the order!
Hux: Wait! You don't have all the facts!
Pryde: Which are?
Hux: Ren is a lil bitch.

I donât know what theyâre bickering about, but they notice some people staring and promptly tell them to âmind their own business/get back to work!â
Chewbacca and Hux in âStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerâ
I will say this a thousand times if I have to!! a million times!!! white women in fandom, I know itâs hard for you to accept, but you can also be racist!! you can!! itâs not just âwhite dudebrosâ and itâs not fucking misogyny when youâre called out on your stupid racist shit!!
you are not empowering the world just by doing your dumb shit in fandoms!! itâs not automatically empowering just because you like a thing!!
sometimes youâre hurtful! sometimes the shit you say and create harms others! and no, weâre not âhating womenâ by calling you out on it!! yâall really make me sick!!
you think youâre exempt!! you think youâre saved from criticism because youâre a fucking woman but white women, you are NOT.
EXAMINE YOURSELVES, DAMN.
You racist morons tagged John in your hundreds of stupid tweets, you were literally dogpiling and harassing him, but now that he screenshots the very same PUBLIC tweets y'all idiots TAGGED HIM IN, suddenly he's the one harassing you?? Please, open a dictionary and learn what words mean. You guys just can't handle the consequences of your actions (typical white woman behaviour). Your public Twitter account is PUBLIC, and so are your tweets, and when you're @-ing someone you're talking to them and they have the right to respond and screenshot it as they want... Paper skin and glass bones crybabies smh. John endured your racist harassment for YEARS and now that he decided to talk back you can't handle it lol. Pathetic.
I donât have IG what was johns post?
The moment I see re//os trying to act like this was about Johnâs comment about Rey is the moment I die laughing- FIRST OFF, none of you should be the ones to even talk about objectifying Rey when you are the ones talking about Reyâs virginity, getting upset she didnât have Kylos babies and even wanting Adam and Daisy to be casted in a movie together just so you can see them fuck for real- and donât even get me started on your treatment of space mom herself, Leia.
And SECOND, it was never about that comment and you know it- if this was a white actor making this joke, you would all be crickets but cause its John, a black man, you suddenly care enough to get mad? FUNNY HOW THAT WORKS- and the moment he makes posts that say he fucking hates your ship and doesnât give a fuck about you all? You HARESS him more and act like cry babies when he fires back and clearly doesnât give a fuck about you all.
THIRDLY, you have been racist to this man for MONTHS and way before 2019 even and what, you expected him to sit down and take that from you? Welcome to the fucking real world- talk shit, GET SHIT.
