♫ and usually i'm fucked up, anxious, too much, but i'll love you like you need me to. imperfect for you. ♫
kai fisher - the secret keeper.
you’re not from around here , are you? i figured because you totally just missed KAI FISHER walking by. don’t tell me you don’t know who HE/THEY are ? they kind of look like JACK WOLFE and i could be wrong but i think that they might be 30 years old right now. they’ve been living in palmview for the last 4 YEARS. and i don’t know if anyone has ever told them this before but they kind of remind me of ANDER MUÑOZ from ÉLITE. if you stick around the town long enough you might catch them in action working at N/A as a NANNY. you see this town isn’t really that big of a place, some folks like to call them the SECRET-KEEPER of palmview! they took a liking to the name too after a while, go figure. oh crap, they must have heard me yapping. they’re coming this way. i got to warn you though, rumor has it they can pretty SARCASTIC at times. i wouldn’t take it too seriously though, from the times i’ve spoken to them they seemed pretty COMPASSIONATE to me. we see each other all the time since they live in that 5 BEDROOM residence beside me over in MANGO BAY LOFTS. i better leave you to it. it was nice meeting you!

QUICK HEADCANONS.
• born and raised in london, moved to palmview a little over four years ago to be with a long distance partner (now ex, wanted connection, could have been boyfriend/fiance/or even husband, super open with the vibe and length of relationship and current dynamic between them!). the relationship didn't work out, but kai decided he liked it here, so he's decided to stay, at least for the time being.
• in the middle of five children (two older siblings, two younger), and definitely has a bit of middle child syndrome, often left to himself as a child because he was well behaved and stayed out of trouble, but that's how he likes it, really, never one to require much attention.
• works as a nanny to rhiannon vane (savannah vane's daughter!)
• typically very soft spoken (but there's a good chance that's because they're talking shit and don't want to be overheard).
• due to his big, trustworthy brown eyes and gentle demeanor, kai is very often the person people go to if they need to divulge a secret - and though he does occasionally enjoy dabbling in a bit of gossip, he'll never share anything told to him in confidence.
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
• ex that he moved here for, siblings (would have come here more recently, any time less than four years ago), best friend, flirtationship, maybe a little book club?, friends, parents/unemployed/people who work from home etc. that he could occasionally do things with during the day while he's watching the four year old
TAKEN CONNECTIONS.
• BENJAMIN HARRIS: book club buddy
• IMOGEN HOFFMAN: book club buddy
• ISABEL HERRERA: roommate
• JACOBI KHARRAL: friend

" are you really trying to convince me to go get more sliders with you right now ? " she'd ask, an eyebrow raising along with a quick shrug of her shoulders. “ okay and suddenly... i'm convinced. didn't really take much to do. ” eve would laugh walking along with kai over towards the direction of where the food trucks have been located. " it sure is.. this party really seems to be quite the hit within palmview. " apart of her had been glad she'd came and didn't keep herself in her apartment doing work like she was planning on doing while the party was ongoing. " do you know how fast news travels within this town ? trust me when i tell you.. i'm sure that we'll all immediately know. as long as we're not part of whatever drama ends up going down... then i may be a little curious. "
"depends. is it working?" kai is pleased when it does, in fact, seem to work, and gets settled in at the end of the line, hoping the food's worth waiting for. he'd just have to trust evelyn's taste, he supposed. "fair point. especially with everyone here." it all seemed quiet so far - at least on the drama front - but he wondered how long that'd last. "i think we should be safe. so long as neither of us go too crazy at the open bar. that's what's going to lead to the most trouble, i think."
“yeah — that's stella's thing. i'm not allowed to handle it anymore.” because before that, they had, like, three and he forgot the password to each one. there's reasons sage doesn't hold high levels of responsibility in his life. “i don't think it would kill me. maim, maul maybe. but it would take far more to do all of that.” sage shrugs, thinking about it: because what if life is not being curious about everything? sounds boring. “alright, well, is there one thing you don't wanna do? take it off my fuckin' picker wheel.” in his mind, obviously, “unless you really wanna conquer a fear of heights or whatever.”
there's more to that story, kai can tell, and he considers asking more - but there are more important matters at hand. they had to get this party started, and start enjoying the party before it was over and he'd wound up missing it all because he couldn't make a decision. "i'm not particularly afraid of heights, actually. ...moths, though. would like to avoid those, if i can. but i don't think i passed by any moth booths, so... we're probably all set there. your choice, sage. surprise me."
"yeah, that's the plan. it's ... been awhile since she's been over there. seemed like a win-win situation i suppose," savannah replied. when it came to her mother, she preferred to keep her answers short, brief. honestly? it was just easier that way. kai could probably tell by her responses and body language that she didn't want to dwell too much on that subject. reaching for the glass of wine, she takes a small sip. "you know? speed dating might actually be kind of fun. i think i'd be open to it. what about you? if we're talking about putting ourselves out there, that should include you too."
"they'll be alright." he hoped. "and you don't want to waste your night out worrying. rhia would want you to be having fun, surely." technically, the toddler would probably just be sleeping, but if she was a little more cognizant of her surroundings, he was almost certain that she would surely want her mother to be having a good time. he'd been aroud the two of them together enough times to see the love the little one had for savannah. "...me? savannah, darling, i don't know how to break this to you, but i'm gay." kai jokes, quick to deflect from the actual point she's getting at, and, instead, brings it back around to her. "we'll find someone for you. i'm sure of it. i'll see if i can gather a couple friends together, get this all set up."
"i'm hoping ... i've been wanting to call her up for updates on their night but i promised myself i wouldn't stress out and actually try to have fun," she sighed, knowing tht she needed to leave her phone in her bag where it belonged. she was only going to be gone for a few hours, she deserved to have a moment of being child free like anyone else. "i mean, do you think they have dating apps for parents? i haven't considered it .... i left out having a daughter on my tinder in hopes of getting more swipes."
"i know you two have your... differences... but i'm sure she can handle getting her to bed. it's just an evening, right? rhia will be okay, i'm certain of it." kai promises, interrupting their conversation just for a second to order a glass of wine for each of them. "i wouldn't know - not really the kind of thing i've ever sought out, but... i wouldn't be surprised, if there was. there must be a big market for it. honestly, i'm sure there's probably enough single parents just in this town to make one. ...or at least some kind of... speed dating night."
“You think?” Arturo catches their amused shock, mouth twitching only just. “He’s twenty pounds of pure muscle, could make a bobcat submit with a glance, but he’s reduced to this docile creature? Some people train their cats, others get trained by them. I’m not weak enough for the latter.”
Feigned offence is translated by the click of tongue and an exaggerated shake of his head. “Listen here, buddy. I don’t know who you are but insinuating that King Hubert is a hardened criminal, straight to his face while he’s trying to enjoy his rare dairy treat, is not only rude but, as his lawyer, it’s defamation. How dare you…” Arturo bites his cheek. “ Besides, even criminals deserve whipped cream from time-to-time. Apologize.”
kai chuckles at the theatrics of it all - the unexpected free show along with his ice cream, but hearing he's offended the cat has him lowering his spoon to atone for his mistake. "oh, my humblest apologies, you'll have to forgive me, your highness. i see now i was mistaken." he lowers his head as he bows to the cat - which doubles as a way to hide the smirk on his face, hopefully keeping his apology seeming at least relatively sincere. "i seem to have forgotten myself. please forgive me."
“i think we should be postin' it on instagram if you follow it? that's stella's territory. i'm not allowed to post on it without permission anymore.” because, well — he doesn't mind telling people off in the comments and that's not good for press! “of course i looked. it's, like, when you die of curosity. if i don't look i'll die, you know?” he won't and also because, well — everybody deserves to be a weird little freak at least once a week. “i'm pretty sure you can just let your feet take you wherever, yeah? half the battle is getting there – then making more choices. i kinda just let shit happen. unless you'd like me to make it for you?” though that sounds fun for him, maybe not for kai. “as long as you promise to not get mad if ends up being a shit one.”
"you know, i don't think i realize you had one, but i'll make sure to follow it when i get home." it would certainly make things easier than trying to track down the information via carrier pigeon, or word of mouth. "haven't you ever heard about curiosity killing the cat, though? it's the opposite, for you?" or was sage just screwed either way? "actually, you know what? i'll take you up on that. sounds more exciting than spending my night here, trying to decide what to do next, instead of actually doing something. i'll take the risk and leave it up to you."
“He won’t bite you.” Arturo assures with a point as Hubert, his orange Maine Coon, leashed and enjoying the warm sunshine, stretches out next to another sitting in the sand of the beach. He clicks his tongue, getting the cat’s attention long enough to place a small cup of whipped cream in the sand between his knees as he sits in their usual spot. “Might kick sand at you though. Sorry in advance.”
"i think this might be just about the best trained cat i have ever seen." kai watches hubert with amusement, and, honestly, a bit of shock, keeping a little distance so as to not startle him. "...either that or he's a very dangerous criminal, and this is the cat version of being transported in handcuffs. i would assume he wouldn't be getting rewarded with whipped cream, though, in that case. what's the little guy's name?"
savannah stopped what she was about to say when she saw her idiot younger brother in his own little drunken world, not seeming to notice the two of them. "anyways," she huffed out. "uh, yes. i somehow got my mom to agree to take her for the night for some grand daughter bounding time," sav admitted. "i'm totally going to try and at least have fun tonight. i'm a bit rusty when it comes to this 'dating, hanging out with people' thing. i can't say it's easy trying to meet up with people once they find out you have a kid too, that's usually a deal breaker."
"well, that sounds... nice." kai knew a little too much about savannah's relationship with her mother to sound entirely convincing, but he hoped this was a good sign. maybe it was the start of a new turn, and they would manage to work things out to some degree. one could only hope. at any rate, it definitely made him feel a bit more grateful about the relationship he had with his own mum. "would you ever consider dating another single parent, do you think? maybe they'd be more understanding of the situation."
" if i'm being honest ? anything at the food truck is really good. i got one of the sliders earlier and it was so good i already want to go back and get another one. " for a while evelyn was kind of just walking and browsing around. seeing what may have interested her the most and what more than likely wouldn't have captured her attention which was most things at this point. " i have a feeling that you're right. i mean.. it's not like drama is ever too far from us in this town. but oh, i hope we're front and center. maybe it's because apart of me is always curious. at least it won't be us getting into any sort of trouble. "
"sounds to me like you and i should go get some sliders, then." that made his decision far simpler, and, without another moment of deliberation, kai heads in the direction of the trucks - only slowing down to make sure evelyn is alongside him. "maybe i should have brought binoculars." he jokes, adding, "it's more crowded here than i anticipated. but... hopefully the news of it will travel to us, at least, if we're not there to see the show."
“this coming weekend, i think? next? i don't remember the days on it anymore. we have it on our big fridge calendar, and our manager is usually on my ass the day before about it too.” because sage hasn't remembered a single date of a day unless it was a birthday, and he usually relies on his phone for all that. including his own. “of course they do, what? they make all sorts of weird freaky shit online — you could find anything if you tried hard enough.” ummmm. “that's not a great answer. what're you lookin' to do? i'll go with.” the band will survive without their purse dog for an hour.
"i'll keep an ear out, then. try to make it." kai takes a small bite of pizza, and makes a mental note, one he hopes he doesn't forget after hitting the open bar, later. "yeah, i... realized pretty much right after i said it. did you end up purchasing any? or just... perusing?" again, it's a question they regret asking the moment it's out, but their curiosity had gotten the better of them. "no clue, yet. i figured i'd decide that once i got here, but... i forgot that would mean making a choice. always trips me up, that. the past and present versions of myself are frequently at war."
evelyn usually wasn't much of a party person herself. it was surprising to her that she ended up finding herself at the party. her idea of staying in would've been making herself tea and reading an unread book on her shelf. besides for that ? there wasn't very much that evelyn wanted to spend her time doing. but she figured.. since she was here. why not just make the most of it ? " surprisingly, the food is actually really good. i've been waiting to see if any entertainment is heading our way. i've noticed that there's never really a party if there is also no drama to follow along with it. "
"really? i haven't had a chance to try any of it yet. got any recommendations for me?" kai glances around, checking out the food trucks around them, trying to see if any in particular stick out - but the shift in conversation topic soon grabs his attention again. "oh, i don't think we'll have to wait long. i can feel it, in the wind - something messy's going to happen tonight. let's just hope we have front row seats."
"thank you, i think that would be a perfect way to start my evening off," savannah smiled at kai as they approached the bar. she found herself a little overwhelmed with the choices, not sure what she was even in the mood for. upon the mention of who she was meeting up with, the girl stopped in her tracks and tried not to blush. "oh! um, i'm not really sure if it's considered a date. i mean, i asked if he wanted to hang out here and he said yes? so, i don't know .... maybe?"
"exactly. don't want to get too wild too fast, and end up like-" as if on cue, a particularly loud man dances by, one kai realizes, a little too late, that he recognizes from savannah's family photos. "...well. just-... you know. for the best, to take it slow. you have the time, right? rhia's gone for the night?" savannah's answer to the question makes kai chuckle, but he's polite enough to try and hide it behind his hand, as best he can. "well, you go out there, and you find out if it's one. don't let him waste your time. you're too fun and pretty to get strung along."
"thank you, it's nice to see you too. i'll let you get me a drink, sure. i don't want to get too crazy this early though," she informed kai, taking his hand as he led their way towards the open bar. "um, i guess sort of same here? i might be planning to meet up with someone here to hang out, but it's not anything like .... serious."
"we'll go easy. something light." kai promises, though they hope she does get a chance to loosen up a bit tonight. he might not have any kids of his own, but he did have plenty of experience with them, and he absolutely know how exhausting they could be. "oh, you mean like... a date?" now that has his attention.
“no — they couldn't afford us,” which is actually kind of laughable because they used to play for god and everybody. sage is almost certain they plugged an amp into his dad's car and played in an empty parking lot just because once. “we try not to stray too far from each other just in case. they veto'd my baby leash idea.” nose scrunches, like he's real disappointed in that. "you havin' fun?"
"shame. when's your next show, then? i'd love to come." it was nice to have a local band around that was actually enjoyable to listen to, and kai wanted to take advantage of getting to see them before they inevitably moved on to bigger and greener pastures. "...do they make those in adult sizes?" actually, he wasn't so sure he wanted to know the answer to that. "mostly, i think. it's still a little early to tell. you?"
"no! for once it seems like," savannah let out an awkward laugh. she was trying not to feel guilty over choosing to come to the event without her child in tow. truthfully, she was just inching for one day where she didn't feel responsible for someone else and to have some stress free fun. "she's spending the day with her grandma, so i hope she won't be missing me too much. but that is the plan ... what are you most excited for? it seems like it's even bigger this year."
"well, look at you! congrats on the big night out! come, let me buy you a drink." kai extends his hand for savannah to take, if she so chooses, and glances over to the bar. "or. ...tip for your drink, anyway." might as well take advantage of the open bar. it'd be silly not to. "mm... not sure yet. hoping to meet someone new, i suppose. these sorts of things are usually pretty great for that. what about you?"
