kenna was born and raised in new york city. she was the daughter of a father who drifted in and out of her life, whenever it was convenient for him, mostly when he needed to impress someone and look like a great father. it didn’t stop her from getting her hopes up every time he said he was going to come visit. her mother worked constantly just to keep them afloat. by the time she was a teenager, she’d already learned how to take care of herself: making meals from almost nothing.
even during the hardest years, she always dreamed of leaving. she craved the family she never really had. late at night, she’d sit out on the fire escape, staring at the skyline, imagining a quieter life somewhere near the ocean. at nineteen, after one last fight with her dad, she decided enough was enough. kenna packed everything she could fit into two bags and left the city behind for a small seaside town she’d only seen in pictures.
the beginning wasn’t easy. kenna worked odd jobs, struggled to fit into the slower pace of town life, and spent many nights wondering if she’d made a mistake. but little by little, the town became home. the ocean calmed something restless inside her, and for the first time in her life, she found people who cared about her without expecting anything in return.
she works as an event planner at the local community centre, where she’s known for bringing warmth and energy into everything she touches. she organizes festivals, beach fundraisers, holiday markets, and summer concerts, pouring her heart into creating moments that bring people together. free-spirited, creative, and endlessly compassionate, she’s the kind of person who dances barefoot at bonfires and remembers everyone’s favourite song.
isabel shakes her head. “ well, i'm new, so … ” they admit, lips pursing into a thin line. “ yeah? there's so many options, though. what would you suggest? ”
“then think of it like a welcome party! have you ever had anything from sunshine bakery? they have a little pop-up down here. i’d suggest starting there for a little snack and then maybe hit the arcade?”
" okay ! " she said, clapping her hands together excitingly. " i am so going to the sundae ice cream bar. please, tell me you're coming with me ! " it was no secret that hadley was already having some fun at the beach party. one thing about her ? was she had simply always loved being down by the beach. " maybe afterwards we can go listen to the music ? or watch one of the movies. i don't remember what they're playing right now, but we should sooo go check it out ! "
one thing about kenna is she was almost always a yes girl. "you had me at sundae." she had a never ending sweet tooth which made hadley great company. "live music sounds perfect on this sunny day. do you know who's playing?"
“ i've never been to a beach party, ” isabel admits, surveying the area. there was a lot to do, and it was honestly a little overwhelming. “ what would you suggest doing first? ”
“never? it’s like a summer kickoff here!” she was a little shocked that the girl had never been. “i always like to start with food. it gives a little energy boost before getting into other rides and events.”
"I don't know what they do to these raspberry cream cheese Danishes to make them so delicious, but I am addicted!" Laken exclaimed before taking a bite of her second danish. "The bakers at Sunshine Bakery are wizards or something."
“i’m pretty sure i dropped onto one knee in front of hadley after biting into one of her croissants the first time.” kenna was at the bakery almost every day for breakfast. when she saw the pop-up at the party, she had to stop by and grab a sweet treat.
hanging out at the heights tavern was always such a vibe; the atmosphere contained the perfect balance of stimulation for someone like liberty, and the drinks were fairly priced. it also never hurt to get an idea of what music resonated with their community. the opportunity to perform only slightly catches her off guard. she's usually there to enjoy other people's drunken karaoke performances. with a shrug of her shoulders, liberty decides to say fuck it and throw caution into the wind. “sure, why not? did you want to perform a duet, or were you just looking for a hype woman?”
"yes! i knew i liked you." kenna grinned excitedly. "definitely a duet. i was thinking something abba. dancing queen, mamma mia, super trouper are always fun. what do you think?"
"oh, not a chance," carter laughs. "i'm here to observe. getting up there would break literally the only rule of observing which is: don't participate."
eyes widen when they're approached. “ me? ” isabel asks, looking around as if to check if kenna had the right person. “ oh, no, no, you wouldn't want that, ” she protests, shaking her head with an awkward laugh. they can't even remember the last time they did karaoke, probably had been years. “ i'm not a very good singer. i'll just embarrass myself up there. ”
"yes, you!" she nodded while letting out a small laugh. "that's the whole point of karaoke. you don't need to be a good singer. you just get up there, sing your heart out and don't care who's watching."
if leia was here ten years ago, she'd be first in life for something like this. anything with those bright lights on her, shining down like some god-light. she can almost hear her mothers voice of soft encouragement to just try it. “oh – um,” hesitation because she hadn't been expecting to be asked, let alone seen. “why don't you do it? i can be — moral support.” a shy, soft smile so she lets the other down as easy as possible for leia standards.
kenna could tell she caught the girl off guard. something about kenna is she was always looking for ways to meet new people. she craved connection and looked for it anywhere she went. "c'mon, let loose a little, it'll be so much fun." pouted her lips slightly at the girl. "you can even pick the song. i was going to do mamma mia, but we can do any song you want."
alyssa hadn't really done much of karaoke. she had tried a few times. but has she ever been good at it ? not really. " okay.. no.. i don't think i can get up there. " the blonde responded with a quick laugh and a shake of her head. " that's so like.. the one thing i've never been particularly good at ! "she raised an eyebrow. " i'm the last person you'd want to see up there. " would it be somewhat fun ? yes, sure. but did she want to embarrass herself up there ? no. " you're not going to make me really get up there, are you ? "
"but that's the fun of karaoke. you don't need to be good, you just need to relax, let loose and have fun." kenna exaggerated the gesture of rolling her shoulders back and shaking out her arms.
karaoke was one of kenna's favourite pastimes. while she wasn't the best singer, she loved to get up there and sing her heart out. she had put her name on the list when she got there and her turn was finally coming up next. "you have to come up with me. come on, it'll be so much fun!" she practically begged the person next to her.
