RIP Captain Jack Harkness. You were a good gerbil
Hey everyone, I need your help. If you haven’t noticed, the above animals are ALL in horrible condition and require new habitats and several vet trips. This is a local pet shop that I have gone to twice and rescued my crested gecko (Boop) from. We have talked to several people there and tried to get them to change their ways but we have even spoken to the owner and he said, “We don’t know anything about reptiles, we just sell them because it brings in business”. No, I’m not kidding you, he seriously said that to us.
Alright, let’s start:
1: Monty (ball python)— this poor baby is stuck on soil with a huge plastic hide and nothing else. As you can see in picture 1 he has an immense amount of shed stuck to him; he’s clearly receiving 0 humidity and as you can clearly see in the second picture the water bowl is filthy and barely even filled. The enclosure can only be opened by turning it around and sliding the lid off so I could bet anything that they don’t even CLEAN the bowl, they just pour water through the mesh into the bowl. He has no cold/hot hide to thermoregulate and he has one heat bulb, the same bulb as every other reptile in the store, sitting above the enclosure in the middle of the tank. As you look, you can see pieces of poo, pee and shed all over the substrate, which clearly hasn’t been cleaned.
2. Bearded dragons: Most of their beardies are co-inhabited and fight over heat, food, etc. As you can see in picture 3 the end of this beardie’s tail has been ripped off and the other beardie he is housed with has the identical problem. Toes missing, nails are messed up and mouth rot is very obvious. When asking the girl currently supervising the store what they feed the bearded dragons she replied saying, “oh, we feed them worms and crickets”.
DID YOU READ THAT? They do not feed them greens of ANY SORT, nor do they gutload/ powder them with vitamins before feeding. Oh, I also forgot to tell you; they don’t have ANY UVB bulbs for ANY of their reptiles.
To add, they don’t have any water in any of their water bowls, suggesting that all of their animals are dehydrated.
Also, when asked about the one with mouthrot (which they are selling for $99) the girl claimed that the animal is, “just really old and that’s what happens as they age”
3. Crested geckos: I don’t have any photos at this time of their horrible care however, when I had rescued Boop I had been informed that they only feed them crickets (NO CGD) that aren’t powdered or gutloaded. The enclosures are BONE DRY and heated with the same light they use for the ball python/bearded dragon. The poor babies are basically digging themselves into the ground to get away from the lamp. They don’t sell CGD or any form of crested gecko diet either, so I guess you are supposed to buy one and just not feed it.
4. Leopard geckos:
Housed on clay looking sand, they don’t have any UVB and I often see them house multiples within a 10 gal or less.
Not to mention the store DOES NOT SELL UVB bulbs, crested gecko food, frozen mice or rats AND heat pads. ALL necessities of reptiles to provide good husbandry and health.
Overall, I have informed them of their horrible care and pointed out what’s clearly wrong with their animals and they basically have told me that they don’t care and as long as they sell it doesn’t matter.
So what I’m asking is that you call or email a report that they are neglecting and selling abused animals at Pet needs of Burlington (777 Guelph line, Burlington, Ontario, Canada).
Report suspected animal abuse To report suspected animal abuse call the Ontario SPCA at 1-888-ONT-SPCA (668-7722) ext. 327 or [email protected], or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), your local Ontario SPCA Branch, affiliated Humane Society or police.
As someone who works in the pet industry, I am constantly appalled by the conditions of other stores. Do what you can to help guys, report any suspected abuse or neglect, even if it's a big name company. Stores like this give a bad name to the rest of us who work hard every day to keep our animals healthy and happy.

Just another pet store cage that’s too small for guinea pigs..
Hey, we are not just another pet store. We are fully aware of the tendency to get too small of cages for animals. Believe me. We do our damnedest to not over crowd and make sure each animal is happy and healthy. At this point, this was the only cage we had available when Momma Guinea started having her babies because of the other animals we were treating as well. They were moved to a bigger cage. So before you assume that every pet store employee doesn't care about the animals or their care or what cage their in, get to know me and my employees and my store and I will rip you a new one if you try to insult us.
