Hey y’all! I’m Tina, a recent graduate in Biological Anthropology form the University of Cambridge. My research focuses on the evolution of human hair diversity - something which is severely under-researched, despite the fact that its one of the most visibly varying traits we humans have!
I was offered a place to do my PhD at Cambridge, but alas, funding did not come through. I will reapply Cambridge, but I’ve also spoken to some really amazing Professors at Penn State and Harvard University who’ve encouraged me to apply to their graduate programs and work with them on this project, but I simply cannot afford the cost of applications before the deadlines , so I am crowdfunding over the next 10 days (check it out).
My bachelor’s thesis was entitled Human Hair Diversity: Quantitative variation of hair fibre shape and pigmentation. The department liked it and awarded it a Starred First (82) and my supervisor and I are working on a publication for a peer-reviewed journal based on this research right now. I ended up finding a lot of interesting things that I’m dying to share with you all! (And hopefully I will be able to share that publication with you all in a few months)
To keep it brief, I’m interested in answering questions such as:
Why did humans evolve such a wide range of hair textures and colours?
Do certain textures/colours provide an evolutionary advantage?
Why did humans lose all their body hair but keep their scalp hair?
My BA thesis is a step in the right direction, but having the opportunity to dedicate an entire PhD to this would bring this field out of the dark ages. And I do not exaggerate when I say that, a lot of studies published in scientific journals will describe hair in categories such as “wavy”, “woolly”, “blond” “red” despite the fact that we have the methods to describe the detailed morphology and chemically structure of hair - and using these methods would be a much more objective approach to studying it!
But unfortunately, a lot of researchers use categories like the ones described above, or even worse they will divide hair into: “African”, “Asian” and “European” hair, completely ignoring anyone who does not fall into those categories and completely homogenizing the massive numbers of populations which fall within these vast geographic regions.
Answering questions about human hair diversity is part of understanding human phenotypic variation - essentially, it’s part of understanding why we look different. I plan to make sure the public can access and understand all of the work that I do + any relevant information on the evolution of human (hair) diversity through my website.
If any of this sounds interesting to you, there’s even more info on the website humanhairdiversity.com and I will be using the hashtag #HairEvolutionPhD across platforms, follow me on Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to hear more about it. And I would really appreciate it if you can support the campaign in any way you can, since I need to reach a minimum of £430 by the end (or I receive nothing), I can assure you that every little bit helps immensely! So, here is the crowdfunding page again.
Thanks for reading!

Check out my photo work from my time exploring in NOLA.
How did you get an internship with Baltimore Sun? I'm looking for photo internships and I'm really interested in working there but I can't find anything on their website about internships.
Long story: I made blog for my digital publishing class in college and it ended up winning a Mobbie Award (the awards are put on by the Sun). After I won they wanted to do an artist spotlight on my 35mm film stuff. I had been emailing and trying for a photo internship for years but I never got a response, so after I gave the interview I asked the reporter if she could pass along my portfolio to their photo director. He said no twice but I kept emailing and he invited me in for a meeting. After looking through my stuff he offered me the photo internship for the fall. Back then (in 2013) they didn’t have Fall interns so mine was unpaid. Now I believe they do so you have a shot at Fall or Summer. I don’t think they post anything, you just have to email and ask I guess. Best time to do that for the summer internship would probably be the November prior. Good luck!
My photo blog finally reached 100k!

I’m seeing a bunch of people do a “6 selfies of 2014” thing, so I figured I’d do it!
I don’t take many selfies because I hate how I look as a boy and I rarely get a chance to dress as a girl, so I’m only posting 5, but this year was a big year for me. Thank you all for being kind and supportive!

I lost. Boooooooooooooooooo [oooooooo [ooooo
This.
They need to not let “celebrities” and major organizations be part of the contest, really not fair to the regular people and makes it less interesting.
But if a “regular person”…
It’s a popularity contest based on votes alone and not merit. Justin Berk is on TV or radio or whatever he is from and thousands of people know who he is and will vote for him. That means regular Joe who is putting out a great product but is known by few has zero chance of winning at all when put up against that. They should do an Editor’s Choice for every single category so that less popular people have a chance to win something on merit alone. If the same people keep winning and everyone else feels they have no chance of competing they are going to stop signing up. Also no one who has any affiliation with the Baltimore Sun should be eligible to win this contest.
Part of being successful in blogging, which is what the Mobbies are based on, IS BEING POPULAR ON THE INTERNET. You can have the best content ever but if you don’t have any followers no one is going to see it or share it which means that the blog is not successful. For example, the photo section for this contest isn’t for the best photographer, it’s for the best photo blog. Sorry, I shoot freelance for the Sun which means I’m affiliated and I won. I shoot for the Sun BECAUSE of my photo blog, that’s how I got my foot in the door with them and how they noticed my photo work to begin with. I think people should stop being so sensitive and step up their blogging game instead of crying on Tumblr.
Congratulations on your win.
Thank you. I wasn’t trying to come off as rude or anything, it just sucks that so many people were complaining (I saw lots of stuff on here and Twitter) about me winning when my blog is something I work really hard on and have for the past few years, my shooting for the Sun had nothing to do with it because a lot of my internet following was there before I even signed with the Sun. Just tired of seeing it and it feels like a slap in the face to me, especially when it’s coming from a ton of people that don’t even know me personally. I didn’t win last year and was super excited about the person’s win. This stuff doesn’t even matter in the long run, it’s not a make or break thing.
I also was not trying to be rude to you either or knock your blog. I have beef with some of how they do things with that contest but it is certainly nothing personal against you. It sounds to me like you achieved the dream a lot of young photographers hope for so for that I am nothing but happy for you.
I see. I just saw a ton of people on social media saying that I didn't deserve my win and that my photo work wasn't that great and blah blah blah...opinions are opinions, every one has them, but it sucks to have to see people's negativity constantly. It's really just a popularity contest to be honest, it's not worth getting upset over. Successful social media is partially being popular, along with having good content, yes, but I would never take this contest to actually mean anything other than a lot of people took the time to vote for me which was nice. If I didn't win I wouldn't be upset about it. I know a ton of awesome blogs that didn't win and they're still awesome and I know several blogs that won that aren't really that great pertaining to their specific categories. No matter what they do with this contest it'll end up not making someone happy so hands are kind of tied there. They used to have it where you can vote once per day from multiple devices and that didn't work out to well....it's not that old of a contest so it gets changed about every year.
