Totally normal for a legitimate for-profit company to refuse to reclaim or stop running their products even after they're no longer being paid to do so. I'm sure it's very normal to just keep running your service for free when your contract's been terminated. Spending money to continue running cameras that supposedly no one is looking at is definitely not an indicator they are just run by the federal government to spy on everyone and only a wacko conspiracy theorist would think so.

Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.

The idea of going into the corporate world after i finish my PhD and having to go through interviews/having a job where my snakebites or hand tats might be disqualifying makes me sick. There would be an explosion of alt and goth people in daily life if they didn't have to take it all off 5 days a week. Thousands of scene kids getting choked out of expressing themselves past like age 18 bc they got bills to pay and Karen from HR thinks that a lip piercing means you're a serial killer.
