For most of us, when it comes to relationships, we go through this cycle: excitement, disillusionment, adjustment, health. That’s the nature of human relationships. The problem is when we get stuck in excitement and disillusionment. We get married and we think that everything is going to be remarkable, but this is a delusion because you will soon have to come to terms with the reality that you’ve married a sinful human being, who if you’re lucky, is just doing their best to follow Jesus and be whole. Being addicted to excitement in relationships is the biggest form of immaturity in our dating culture. If you’re in that place, your craving for love will never be met. What we’re actually called to is to learn to adjust to the reality of who that person is and who you are, and you must both work at this through sacrificial love. Only then will we experience the health and depth of meaningful relationships we long for.
