Madame X (detail) by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925)
oil on canvas, 1883-4
As of Saturday I have been in Chicago 10 months. The last time I lived somewhere for ten months straight and was happy about it was never.
Ten months with no plans to leave, and no desire to. It feels good. My heart feels settled, more settled than it has felt since I was 17 and had only lived in one place and knew nothing about moving or leaving.
The terrible, distracting being-in-love is over. I mean, the feelings are not gone, but it’s no longer a thing. It’s done and it’s fine. I was sad for 3 days and then got over it. No time for people who cannot love me like I need them to.

I want to visit here so bad
It’s second week and I am not taking any classes this quarter, just writing my thesis and working a ton at the coffee shop and the bookstore. Things are very good and my thesis is going to bang

Home is not where you were born; home is where all your attempts to escape cease.

What I have learned about home: home is not a thing that preexists; home is a thing you have to make. I am so proud of the home I am making here, and so grateful for all the help I have in making it.

When trouble strikes, head to the library. You will either be able to solve the problem, or simply have something to read as the world crashes down around you.

It’s sunny af and 40 degrees today, and the sky is blue and cloudless, and my thesis is going to be spectacular, and I bought a piece of steak and an artichoke to cook tonight, and I finally deleted Facebook, and it’s tenth week which means this exhausting quarter is so close to over
And I have a new, giant bookshelf which is making me all kinds of giddy.

Friendly reminder to check you’re not holding tension in your body. Let your shoulders drop, unclench your hands and jaw. Take a deep breath. Much better.
Trying to remember to breathe more deeply these days
