So obviously Murderbot’s whole life pre-PresAux is wall-to-wall violation and abuse, but every time I reread All Systems Red, I’m struck by how the scene with the combat override module brings the subtext about sexual violence this close 🤏 to the surface. Like, what literally happens on the page is that MB is physically overpowered, partially stripped of clothing, bent facedown over a table, and penetrated against its will so that someone can use its body for their own purposes. Barely subtext!

Anyway, I find it really poignant that Mensah is the one to rescue it from that assault, just as she helps it escape the broader abuse of its enslavement. No wonder that’s the moment MB imprints on her duckling-style.

When, in the very next scene, MB physically retaliates against Gurathin's violation of its mind and and declares eternal I Don't Like You, of course it's only able to do that because it's been outed as rogue, but also...what if being treated as something worth protecting for the first time was part of what allowed MB to start treating further violation as unacceptable?

i'm rereading the murderbot diaries and murderbot's utter conviction that it and gurathin are bitter enemies is still so funny. buddy. gurathin got over this months ago. he's just a quiet guy.

one-sided antagonism is so delicious.  murderbot diaries i also very much enjoy how surreal it must be for gurathin /   to know that the heavily armed rogue secunit holds a grudge against him /  and also know that all it will ever choose to do about this is make frowny faces and flip him the bird. / (tags via space-mouse)

When I was a teenager I would make these acetate sheets and pretend they were animation cells.

I found an old one I had made and it made me want to make a new one. So, here it is.

It didn't turn out nearly as nice as I had wanted it to (my own worst critic?? Never!), but I'm still happy I had the energy and mind to be creative. Tell me what you think?

It occurs to me that in the first chapter of Platform Decay, the shuttle they're attached to is the one with ART and Mensah, right? The Murderbot present in chapter one (Murderbot 3.0 if you will 😂) isn't aware of that, that information was erased before this copy was created.

But in the last chapter, Murderbot can sense ART's presence. So.... can shuttle!ART sense MB 3.0 in a similar way? They had already parted once, since Murderbot wakes up in a storage container in the next chapter, but can it feel Murderbot slipping away in this way too?

And then, Murderbot 3.0 says 'Obviously, I did not not want to do this. But Three was shit at pretending to be a human". So Murderbot made an iteration for this mission was because without doing so, Three wouldn't be able to carry out the objectives.

The first time I read Platform Decay, I thought, 'wow! I kinda wasn't expecting Murderbot to create another iteration so soon after 2.0! if at all ever again! #GROWTH'

But it wasn't really ready yet 😢 And now ART has to watch this other version of its friend slip away for the second time now 😭

At least this time they made sure there was a way for the iteration to survive! I guess that too counts as growth
